nuckles barbecue. although i am no longer a resident of greensboro, i remember stamey's...very good bbq, but when it comes to piedmont bbq, my father, jesse w. nuckles was the king and the first bbq restaurant in greensboro. stamey's was in lexington, if i'm not mistaken or nearby....then moved to greensboro.

there is great bbq here, but the chopped isn't it.. i usually choose other bbq joints for a variety of reasons. i have eaten at both locations, off & on, for 50 years, and probably will come from time to time, in the future, but their limited menu, horrible bbq slaw, the dry, oblong hush puppies, and the way they mince(grind, really) their pork bbq leaves much to be desired when other choices are available. and their sliced bbq not an option at $10 per pound.

i will still pickup a shoulder from time to time because their bbq is excellent lexington style, it is the processing i don't care for. i also buy both their dipping sauce & hot sauce, and i give them high marks on both. they have started serving bbq chicken, but it has a sweet tomato sauce i don't care for. the ffs are awful, and so is the hot dog.

even for a bbq joint, they serve one of the worst hot dog in the entire state. i have no idea how you can get chili to that consistency. their waitstaff service is always great, though there is some complacency in the checkout folks. the folks in greensboro seem to love this place and have since 1953 when the original stamey's opened as a drive-in with curb service. and other folks across the state give it high marks also. i just think it could be much better, like its lexington counterparts. i would give this place 2 stars because of the service, the sauces, and the shoulders.

best barbecue in nc. you can taste the difference 100% wood cooked pork barbecue makes. they have been doing it the same time honored way since 1930!!! great service. they are super fast.

they have some of the most affordable prices i have ever encountered in my travels.

i would drive 200 miles out of my way for a stameys sandwich, hushpuppies and peach cobbler.

if you are in greensboro and looking for a good barbecue joint to eat at, just start following the signs around the city for the greensboro coliseum and you will end up at stamey's old fashioned barbecue right across the street from the coliseum. stamey's has been serving up their lexington-style barbecue f0r over seventy years to north carolina residents with a whole of lot of tradition and a whole lot of wood. the original stamey's location, the one i went to, is located across the street from the greensboro coliseum. i went a few days before the acc men's basketball tournament started so it wasn't too busy. they are normally slammed during the tournament or whenever other big events come to the coliseum so make sure that you get there early so you don't have to wait in line forever. you can get in and out of stamey's pretty fast so it is a great lunch spot to hit up if you are trying to get back to work. i ordered the combination plate with a cup of brunswick stew. even though bruns

i first tried stamey’s not long after moving to greensboro and was very underwhelmed. the location seemed dated, and the chopped barbecue was gray, mushy, and flavorless. for the better part of a decade, i avoided this place and was baffled by the favorable reputation it enjoyed. at my wife’s urging, however, i decided to relent and give stamey’s another try. while my opinion hasn’t quite done a complete 180, i can definitely admit that stamey’s is a lot better than i remembered.

some people think stamey's is a great lexington style bbq restaurant, but i feel it is simply an average one.  it is perfectly adequate, but in a bbq-intensive region like the piedmont triad, adequate doesn't get you far enough.  there are several other "q" restaurants in the area i prefer over stamey's, including little richards, bib's, and camel city bbq in winston, and kepley's and country bbq in high point.  the actual pork at stamey's has a good smokey flavor (perhaps a bit smokier than i would like), but was too dry.  their sauce is a "dip" style and doesn't do that much to moisten things.  however, the prices are very affordable, and the ambiance has that old bbq lodge atmosphere that is becoming a thing of the past in many places.  overall, i give stamey's a solid 3.5, but better options exist.  i prefer this location to the battleground ave one - it has a nicer feel, with tall ceilings and many windows.

chopped barbecue pork & chicken. ok but merely average

-----07 mar, 2015-----

not bad, but merely average.. had chopped pork and chicken. the bbq sauce was great, but the chicken was all skin with very little meat. plus it was extremely dry. the chopped pork was ok. the service was below average.

i can’t say enough good things about stamey’s and i hope to make it back very soon. it is the definition of a 5 whole hog plate of chopped pork barbecue and to me, also the definition of a 5 whole hog joint.

classic lexington style barbecue. try the chopped pork sandwich with hush puppies. if you prefer eastern style, vinegar sauce, their's is very good. the barbecued chicken is also a favorite. the brunswick stew is a little too much like vegetable soup for me. the service is fast and friendly. if you have any room left try the homemade peach cobbler. located right across from the coliseum and aquatics center.

posted thu, 06/13/2013 - 17:29 by smoke daddy tour:  north carolina tour joint:  stameys barbecue we like stamey's!  the outstanding cobblers are followed closely by the pork and atmosphere.  solid.  we were so busy eating that we forgot to take pictures of the spread... oops.  enjoy the photos of the smokehouse.  main fare: sliced - beautiful.  pink smoke ring extends all the way through the meat.  outside is extra smoky.  excellent. chopped - machine chopped, but not mushy.  flavors meld together to form a very fine whole.  we decide to order sandwiches rather than full trays of finely chopped pork. other fare: slaw - very good. no cream at all.  vinegar + sweetness = good balance. brunswick stew - veggies (including peas) in a robust broth.  like a hearty vegetable beef soup, complete with tater squares. corn pups - hot. fresh.  not as sweet as some we've had. dip - table dip is red and chock full 'o spices peach and cherry cobblers are both outstanding... but i give the edge to the

i thought bbq was supposed to be smoked and have flavor. the only thing about my sandwich that had flavor was the sauce.

best bbq. i absolulely love stamey's. every time i go to wet n wild i go to stamey's afterward for dinner. it's cheap and really tasty. it's very fast which is good, because i am kind of impatient when i'm hungry. you need to order an extra side of hush puppies because they are so good. i recommend this restaurant for anyone.
