nuckles barbecue. although i am no longer a resident of greensboro, i remember stamey's...very good bbq, but when it comes to piedmont bbq, my father, jesse w. nuckles was the king and the firstbbqrestaurant in greensboro. stamey's was in lexington, if i'm not mistaken or nearby....then moved to greensboro.

there is greatbbqhere, but the chopped isn't it.. i usually choose otherbbqjoints for a variety of reasons. i have eaten at both locations, off & on, for 50 years, and probably will come from time to time, in the future, but their limited menu, horriblebbqslaw, the dry, oblong hush puppies, and the way they mince(grind, really) their porkbbqleaves much to be desired when other choices are available. and their slicedbbqnot an option at $10 per pound.

i will still pickup a shoulder from time to time because theirbbqis excellent lexington style, it is the processing i don't care for. i also buy both their dipping sauce & hot sauce, and i give them high marks on both. they have started servingbbqchicken, but it has a sweet tomato sauce i don't care for. the ffs are awful, and so is the hot dog.

even for abbqjoint, they serve one of the worst hot dog in the entire state. i have no idea how you can get chili to that consistency. their waitstaff service is always great, though there is some complacency in the checkout folks. the folks in greensboro seem to love this place and have since 1953 when the original stamey's opened as a drive-in with curb service. and other folks across the state give it high marks also. i just think it could be much better, like its lexington counterparts. i would give this place 2 stars because of the service, the sauces, and the shoulders.

some people think stamey's is a great lexington stylebbqrestaurant, but i feel it is simply an average one.  it is perfectly adequate, but in a bbq-intensive region like the piedmont triad, adequate doesn't get you far enough.  there are several other "q" restaurants in the area i prefer over stamey's, including little richards, bib's, and camel citybbqin winston, and kepley's and countrybbqin high point.  the actual pork at stamey's has a good smokey flavor (perhaps a bit smokier than i would like), but was too dry.  their sauce is a "dip" style and doesn't do that much to moisten things.  however, the prices are very affordable, and the ambiance has that oldbbqlodge atmosphere that is becoming a thing of the past in many places.  overall, i give stamey's a solid 3.5, but better options exist.  i prefer this location to the battleground ave one - it has a nicer feel, with tall ceilings and many windows.

-----07 mar, 2015-----

not bad, but merely average.. had chopped pork and chicken. thebbqsauce was great, but the chicken was all skin with very little meat. plus it was extremely dry. the chopped pork was ok. the service was below average.

been eating stameys for over 40 years and still liking it.located across tfom the greensboro colisiem.coming inside you will see pics of pres. bush when he ate there.loyal wait staff and great service in family setting .counter seats ,booths or tables ,take you pic.hickory slow cookedbbqwith vinager based sauce is hard to beat.hot dogs all the way withbbqslaw is good with a chopped sandwich and an order of hushpuppies .the fries are not my favorite .the dessert looks great but i never have room for dessert. ask for extra "dip" with yourbbqplate or buy the mild suace(dip) to go with your take out order.they offer meals for 4 or 6 people (to go)and when availabe the frozenbbqis a better deal .get a frozen pound &1/2 to take on out of town trips (about $10) .granny likes the bagged pork skins .these are hard skins and not the puffy type ...got to go to stameys now.

whether this is your kind ofbbqor not, this is the meaning of doing a few things and doing them well. hotdogs, bbqpork, hushpuppies, slaw. awesome, accurate, quick service. being a native here, this is thebbqi grew up on so i think it is the best thing ever! same for battleground location. this is also a magnificent place to call up and tell 'em you want to come by later and pick up 3 pounds ofbbq2 quarts of slaw, etc to party with. they sell their own sauce too! definitely a ncbbqhot spot.

classic lexington style bbq. for those not from nc, when we saybbqwe mean chopped/pulled/sliced pork from typically a smoked pig. most places slow roast their swine in smokehouses with hickory and variety of other woods. one test to see if you have a goodbbqjoint is to look around back for a pile of wood and/or a smokehouse.

stamey's is where i grew up going for bbq. in nc there are two types of bbq, western (or lexington style) and eastern. western uses a tomato based sauce while the east prefers a more "pure" vinegar. debate is fierce at times over what's best. i personally like both, it just depends on how its cooked.

stamey's produces a wonderful lexington style pork for a great price. out of towners will be shocked at the affordability. when you come for the first time go for the whole experience. get a chopped plate with coleslaw and hushpuppies and be sure to have some cobbler with ice cream for dessert. you can wash it all down with one of the south's finest examples of sweet tea. enjoy!
