we had our first alaskan meal at this place. we were in the downtown area and wanted to have a good brunch. i looked up yelp and realized that there are not many options. spenard roadhouse was listed at #1, so we decided to go there. the restaurant is quite big and busy. we had spicy thai chicken curry, avocado melt sandwich with side tots.the avocado melt sandwich was good, sidetotswere yummy, but the spicy thai chicken curry was just ok. we used our northern light coupon here and saved a few bucks.

had the cubano sandwich and a beer. while maybe not 100% authentic, the sandwich was very good. the sauce in the pulled pork had just enough hot to leave a nice little glow in the mouth. very nice blend of flavors. the tiny supertotson the side were okay, but there's only so much you can do with tater tots. but, the sandwich was so good that i could not finish it, the tater tots, and the beer. when i leave some beer behind, the sandwich has to be good.

mediocrity at its best. the name roadhouse is deceiving. they do not serve steak as a standard menu item. i got the special, flat iron steak, and "disappointed" is an understatement. go somewhere else if you want a decent steak because you won't find that here.

the supertotswere good... but it's hard to mess up tater tots, cheese and bacon.

eww. this place ceases to impress me, everytime i eat here the food is boring and over priced. and why are they serving tatertotsat a nice restaurant? the hot dogs are bad and so is the calamari. i dont see why everyone likes it so much!

upscale comfort food. from what i understand spenard roadhouse is part of a jointly owned threesome of restaurants that includes snow city cafe and sacks cafe. all three are good. spenard's serves high end comfort food. they have great simple plates like grilled cheese and burgers (served with their trademarked tatertotsinstead of fries), and also more dinner-like dishes like short rib meatloaf with creamed kale and wild salmon & rice. the menu is adventurous enough to include quinoa, and despite the comfort food angle has a surprising amount of heathy, veggie-centric fare that's fresh and delicious.

the bar boasts an impressive list of whiskey & beer and is a great place to have drinks before dinner. definitely worth a visit.

mediocre. the food is so-so. i've eaten there 3-4 times. at first i gave it credit for being new but it hasn't improved. i had a vegetarian pasta dish that was bad. i think the cook over-heated olive oil and poured it on the pasta. later i had a spinach salad, which was insipid. the rest was just forgettable. it's not just me - i regularly hear people complain about it. i can't understand why it isn't better - one of the owners also owns sacks, one of my favorite restaurants. i also can't understand why it continues to attract crowds. maybe it's the liquor because i can't imagine tatertotsbringing people back again and again.

surprise!. i may not have come to this place if it hadn't been recommended by locals, but i'm glad i went. i had the bacon of the month as an appetizer - very tasty, though the portions were sadly small for $9. this month it's a peppered teriyaki bacon with some sort of relish dip. you're better off getting the supertotsif you're hungry though. the place is known for theirtotsand they live up to it. i had the salmon as a main course, which was very tasty, though i wonder if i shouldn't have had the ahi & noodles. in the end, i was still rather hungry so i got a bowl of the tomato soup, which was alarmingly good and finally took the edge off a hunger that only 8 hours of flying and a 3-hour time shift can give to you. while you're here, taste some of the local beers on tap.

one of my favorite places in anchorage. i've never had a bad meal here but the bacon jam burger and chicken curry are definitely my two favorites. the bar list is filled with great drinks. the only downfall is the spotty service. sometimes it seems they can't keep up with the crowd...i sat at the table for 10 minutes before being greeted by my server but thetotskeep me coming back.

casual dining done right. spenard roadhouse offers comorftable dining. that is to say the menu is all comfort food, all the time.

the food can tilt a little on the greasier, heavy side. so come hongry! the turkey rueben is my fav, but next time i'm going to try the bacon jam burger.

thetotsare a fun throwback, and best of all i have always had a good experience with the waitstaff here.

funky atmosphere, interesting food? i'm sold.. i love the spenard roadhouse. it was the very first restaurant my boyfriend took me when i drove into town (phew, what a drive from michigan!), and it continues to be our regular 'fall back' place. though we always want to try out restaurants we haven't tried before, we always seem to fall back on spenard when we head out with friends or just for a drink.

the roadhouse has a definite 'hipster' vibe to it. it's a re-purposed pizza hut (or something) right on 'fast food row', with fantastically funky, tacky, gaudy, awesome decor. the parking lot is always packed, and sometimes difficult to get into and out of (especially in the winter). there is typically a wait for a table (sometimes even at lunch), but there's a really comfortable lounge area with couches and magazines.

the waitstaff have been nothing but attentive and pleasant when i have eaten there (numerous times). they're young, hip, and seem to love their jobs. one time, when i didn't love my soup (i only ate about 3 bites), the server noticed and asked about it (i said it was a little to acid-y for my tastes), he insisted on taking it off the bill. also, the staff are very knowledgeable about their bar and menu.

the menu would definitely be called a fusion. it's interesting and fun, but also includes favorites like tatertots(their specialty!) and bacon. the menu seems to change a lot, but i've never been disappointed. also, the drinks list is extensive and fair-priced.

i'm very happy the spenard roadhouse is here in anchorage, and very close to my apartment. it's a great fall-back, or just if it's a 'i don't feel like cooking let's hit spenard' kind of night. i never regret going to the roadhouse.
