by far the best south indianplacein the country - i have been going there for years (only for special occasions!!!) and though its pricey the experience and food are amazing. the modern yet classical decor is excellent and the entire cutlery and the eye for detail have always wowed me. their melugu rasam (pepper rasam) is a must try and so is their appam and chicken/fish curry. they have a wide menu to choose from and their grilled fish is also excellent. they welcome you with 4 chutneys and some short eats (mini applams etc) and that is pretty yummy too. overall a royal experience and need to try it out to know it

cant believe thisplacehas 4.8.

i ordered an andhra mutton biriyani. it was too salty and the masalas were undercooked. meat was well done though. the ghee roast chicken was also extremely underwhelming.

overall not worth the price at all.

taj restaurants are one of the bestplaceto relive the local delicacy. this chain has never let me down, and always surprised with best flavour.
would like to always venture into anyplaceof taj chain and have a best dine.
the local south culture in food is shown in single plate.
enjoy.

chennai's best fine dining restaurant in chennai's (arguably) best hotel. we went, the seven of us, on a monday evening and were all surprised to see that theplacewas at capacity on a weekday night! but once the food arrived, we quickly understood why (no food pics, note!). every single dish we ordered (attached the list as a pic haha) was outstanding. and southern spice was the rare restaurant whose service outshone the already wonderful south indian food. the vaunted taj hospitality stood heads and shoulders above competing restaurants, thanks to our delightful wait staff (special mention to ms. tamilselvi who made us, especially my grandparents, feel right at home).
make no mistake, southern spice is an expensive place. but, with a budget of 1500 on average per head, one can really experience the best of south indian hospitality.
taj coromandel and southern spice make me proud to be a chennaite.

i have visited thisplaceseveral times with overseas company customers and every time we visit, the cordial welcome, ambiance and the pleasant way each and every thing is looked after is something to recall. their appam with fish curry and thali are great for lunch or dinner. on certain days, they have bharatnatyam dance being performed while at the entrance, a fortune teller with a parrot sits.

very nice ambiance and decor.

at the end of the food, love the way south indian coffee is served and the long drawn twirl given by their expert serving staff.

if you can afford, thisplaceis definitely recommended.

want to rate a 4.5/5 but no option in this app! spent a night in hotel taj and went to southern spice for dinner.

theplaceis exquisite with impeccable staff behaviour. bala served us dinner and was supremely helpful.

complimentary appetizers (variety of papad) - 4/5

decor - 5/5 (very royal and felt like a time travel)

veg south thali - 4.5/5 (must try) the pure ghee poured into rich white grains will work out a magic. appam is too good as well

dosa - 4/5 (they dont have on menu but bala got it done for us)

hospitality of staff - 5/5 (you will be pleasantly surprised with their proativeness)

bala served the best payasam i ever had in any place

the feast ended with an amazing sweet paan

south indian fine dining with an old world charm. the thalis are good but i would recommend trying ala carte. the kerala neimeen biryani was the most awesome seafood biryani i have had in my life.

the service is impeccable, just ask for bala who was amazing.

mind you thisplaceis expensive and if you have drinks, ensure you have a fat wallet.

the ponni rice with arachivitta sambhar & ghee can transport you into a tamil brahmin’s house. theplaceis outstanding whether you do the thali or order ala-carte. this to me is a culinary journey of south india starting with the melagu rasam & cooling off with the curd rice in the end; with lots of appams & ishtew, idiyapam with kadala ghassi and neer dosa thrown in for good measure. this is the very best of south india! period.

we visited the southern spice on the new year for a family get together. we have heard about the fabulous ambience and were really looking forward for itcs hospitality.

we ordered a set of thali meals. the wait seemed endless and finally the food came after 45 minutes. they started with a piece of parotta and curries. and then it was another 30 minute wait for the appams to arrive. none of the staff really seemed to want to serve, weren't paying attention at all.

by the end of the meal, we were really frustrated with our decision to visit the southern spice. even if cost is not a concern, dining experiences are a lot about the warm hospitality and in that regard, thisplaceis among the coldest as it can get.

i saw thisplaceon zomato and i bookmarked thisplacebcoz of thier ambiance.

the moment i entered wowww!!!! i could able to feel royalness of thisplaceits like an indian palace and they welcomed us with vankam ahaaa! its always good to be greeted by our own language the staffs are giving enough time & space to the choose the menus.

food & experience
they have recommended to try their signature thalis but since from my chilhood i don't  like thalis so i went with biryani
briyanis
they are having threee types of briyani from the three southern states of india mutton from andhra chicken from tamilnadu and i think fish from kerala. we had mutton and chicken one thing i was surprised is the quantity of the dishes generally in star hotels the quantities are very limited but this restaraunt is having enough amount of quantity for their price.

mamsam briyani (mutton briyani)
its a andhra stlye mutton briyani filled with lot of mutton pieces the mutton is soft and taste of the briyani is also good.

chicken briyani (kongu style)
its a tamilnadu style chicken briyani the taste is very good and chicken is well cooked i liked the taste of this one compare to the mamsam.

kori kempu
its like a chicken 65 its crispy and yummy i enjoyed this dish its super good.

strawberry milkshake
the thickness of the shake is very good and its tasted well.

finally my tummy is filled with different south indian states delicacies and i was thoroughly enjoyed the food.
i can say its a typical south indian star restaraunt from language, ambience, and upto the music its literally south indian.

another thing i have to mention is thier service all of them are very courteous kudos to the team superb service.

overall i would highly recommend thisplacefor those who really likes south indian food really this restaurant will satisfies you in all aspects.
