we love this place.
the food menu is perfect and not too complicated. mostly vegan options which is amazing and delicious. thecocktailsare by far the best in jhb, well priced and packs a punch!

great bar. an intriguing first visit as i didn't know exactly where it was and what to expect. i like that it is a real bar and is not trying to be a restaurant. they have all sorts of amazing ingredients for theircocktailsand a lot of locally sourced liquors, etc. the door experience is a bit weird but the ladies eventually sort out access and seating. the bar service is great, i am an iced water addict and it was nice not ever ever to ask for iced water. the minute my glass neared empty they topped it up without question. the bar staff also took their time to recommend drinks and explain ingredients. will definitely go back.

where mystery & mixology meet.

late last evening with a few new found friends and at the recommendation of award winning mixologost maynard booyzen we found ourselves at sin+tax.

the name hints at what to expect but standing at the hidden black door, we had no idea of the adventure that lay inside. what followed was a feast of conversation with local bartenders from jozi and durban.

alex behind the bar stimulated our senses with incredible artisinalcocktails- the saffron saff off and crème brûlée threw us into a world of tastes only a place like this can offer.

sin+tax is a little on the pricey side but rightfully so. this is not your everyday drink spot. it's a speakeasy for the decerning drinker.

the menu changes with the season and current mixology trends. we enjoyed the current #tasseomancy high tea with elephants experience.

do yourself a favour and indulge in a night out you won't soon forget.

soni have been amongst the first person, along with my partner, to go to this place. i was there the evening where it was not even opened yo the public! now, i do say that the place is stunning and thecocktailsare amazing. problem: their attitude litterally sucks, especially at the door. they behave like they make you a favour... this happened few weeks ago and yet again last night we had a terrible experience. my partner and myself went in for a drink at around 8.30pm. at the door we were told to wait 30 seconds as they needed to inspect the place!!!!! once in, with the place almost empty (i counted 10 clients at the time)they told us we could sit only in one specific place. of course i went to another couch and we were told that the couch is a 6 seaters and we should move in case a group comes in!!!! at that point we left and went nextdoor to coalition which, with a full bar, welcomed us in the best manner. now, let me explain you something guys: we are european andnwe have been amongst the top cocktail bars in the world: milan, paris, madrid, london, amsterdam, new york, hong kong, bruxelles and i can go on. we certainly don't need to come to your place and by not coming our life won't change a bit. we, and our circle of friends, will support your nextdoor bar. on the contrary your life is going to change by lacking people coming and spending big money with you. things don't last and when in 12 months time you are going to struggle for people coming to you, you will definitely regret the way you treat your clients in good times. also, your cocktail prices are the same as marble!!! marble is a super upmarket place where plenty of money have been invested. please remember that you need to justify those prices (your place is very nice but not even close to the investment the guys from marbles put in). i however wish you good luck and you definitely will not see me again until such time you will change that superior attitude of yours....

i was so happy to come across such hidden gem, until i decided to go back few times....at least i tried. the second time i had to queue - the place wasn't even full, my friends were not allowed though so i left and went to the always full but welcoming bar at collection, so did the couple waiting behind me for the same reasons. it was cold to wait for half an hour to go into a half empty bar. very disappointing.
the next time i tried i was told that i need to wait so they can check if there is enough place inside. there was one table and me and my friends - i ended only showing them the place as we no longer had time to order. shocking.
the third time - last night..again the same politics.
it is a bar. great concept, some of thecocktailsreach over r150 surely they can apply less politics and be happier to see a vibey crowd... i did speak to management, every time there is a vague explanation. writing this review with the hope that this poor attitude changes, it would be sad for such cosy place to close down.

bestcocktailsin town. well worth the wait for some of the more complicated drinks but i can't recommend it highly enough for a good night out even if it may cost a bit more then some spots

what a unique spot!

probably the bestcocktailsi've had in jhb. their ever changing seasonal menu is also a great hit - you're never bored and are always looking forward to your next visit. 

the bartender/waiter always walks you through the menu and if you're not sure what to go for (there is always so much choice!). they'll happily take the time to pick a drink for you based on your tastes. 

the drinks are gorgeously presented with pride. there's a wonderful buzz about the place. this is a perfect spot to meet up with friends for a drink and to relax and unwind after a long week. 

can't wait to see what they come up with in the new year!

sneaky and classy bar, awesome atmosphere and cocktails. very playful with their signaturecocktailsand that provided excitement and good tasting drinks.

definitely makes some of the bestcocktailsin jozi...fantastic after dins spot.

i love that it feels as though you could be in a different city in that it’s not a typical pretentious jozi spot

a small place have bestcocktailsi ever have had in joburg.a little bit tucked behind. may not easy to find for first time visitors. you also can order the best pizza from next door

gorgeous drinks, friendly and fun staff and such a cool, classy and speak easy vibe. sin tax is one of those joburg gems you find and never look back. thecocktailsare classy and the culture is so magic. can’t wait to be back!

mixology at its best. this hidden gem of a bar is really ultra cool and has the most talented mixologists. loved the menu - the theme up until july is high tea with elephants with the cocktail menu offering styles and tastes ofcocktailsthat are quirky, fun and very tasty.

soooooooo, i think i was over excited to have parents night off... and dragged some friends to the “hidden gem”. it’s a room in the back of a cute little bar. decor was nice,cocktailswere rather expensive and can’t say i enjoyed what i tasted i am sure there are other nice ones. service was lovely waiter was friendly, popcorn was amazing.

bestcocktailsin jhb! a must do experience, a friendly upmarket lounge ambiance with good music. the “bar men” or “specialists” are friendly and very welcoming.

underground bar, joburgs best kept severely.cocktailsgo for over r80 each but very worth it! they use fresh ingredients and the mixologists are a pleasure to watch. watch out for the gourmet popcorn and free shots from julian!!!
