shyam's bombay halwa house

oh where to start, where to start! i was searching for a place that would give me authentic vegetarian north indian food (far too many places have duped me with their sambar-y rajma and chole). and this place didn't disappoint.
the halwa house is not very easy to find because it's not on the thoroughfare, but this only adds to the general quaint charm of the place.
we went for a weekday dinner and therefore were quite surprised to find the place full. families, mostly. we didn't get a table for two, instead shared a table for six with another couple (mother and daughter).
let's now talk about the food.
it was scrumptious! they spoil you for choice, they really do. there's about 40 starters, and twice the number of side dishes. the number of indian breads are endless. they have a selection of rice as well.
weorderedmasala papad, the stuffed mushroom tikka, kaju paneer and butter roti. the food was excellent! the tikka was divine. kaju paneer was slightly sweet (we were warned by the waiter) however the paneer was soft and broke as soon as we speared it with roti.
my mouth waters as i think of this place again. will definitely keep going there!

the rotis and paranthasorderedwere black(burnt), very thick & tasteless.

iorderedcheese balls and dum briyani. cheese balls was good but briyani. i have never eaten this kind of worst briyani before. i doubt if it's briyani or fried rice. and the fun part is this briyani is available nly on sunday coz it's special. wth please don't fool your customers. worst experience overall👎👎👎👎

hi sir we areorderedsome different varieties of paneer recipe it's good but we expected more what dinning room your service when we are ordering time has not been get parratta/ non you should be take care for quality. we hope for our next order please take more care. thanks

it gave me the worst acidity. they put loads of ajinomoto and soda . please refrain from ordering from this place . extremely unhealthy food so far i’veorderedfrom zomato . also in the name of briyani , they sent me fried rice. unhealthy food preparation.

i haveorderedveg.pulao and spl dum.briyani but i have received same as 2 veg pulao which was soo oily

this is the first time since post-covid times i'm visiting this restaurant and i do see a lot of cleanliness and hygienic issues in the restauarant. there is a strong bad odor/smell inside restaurant which was making our experience even more unpleasant. weorderedfor veg. noodles which was completely drenched in oil. this is my the 4th time visit and this is the first time i'm experiencing all these issues. :(

tucked away in a residential street in the heart of t. nagar, this place serves excellent and authentic north indian fare. ambience cool and comfortable, service very helpful and prompt. food excellent. what more can you ask. had the stuffed paneer tikka for starters. it was superb with the right mix of spices. the paneer was soft and succulent.orderedthe sindhi koki. just perfect. the phulkas too were good. the malai kofta was the highlight. not at all sweetish like in most places.orderedthe punjabi paneer which was not in the menu. but it was too good. the tawa pulao was cooked to perfection. my only grouse was this came along with the rotis, and by the time we finished the rotis and came to the pulao it had turned cold. wish they pay attention to these small things. rabdi as dessert was divine. a great place to have a satisfying north indian food in chennai. i would have given five star, if not for the cold pulao.

after a long week at work, i was looking forward to catching up with a friend. the place was supposed to be a surprise to my north indian friend.
however, that was not to be.

weorderedpaneer tikka which was good. the rotis and paneer subzi were average. the food was definitely over-priced. we felt it wasn't justified considering the quality or taste wasn't as exceptional. being pretty crowded, the service was also a let down. we had to keep asking for the bill.

i'm not really looking forward to visiting this place anytime soon.

had heard a lot about this restaurant, so defenitely it was on a must visit list.
so we went there this sunday evening, reaching at around 9:00 pm and were given a promise that we will get our seats in 30 mins. however we got it after 10:10 pm, such waiting period..!
ordered for food while standing in queue itself, what an experience..:!
baby corn pakodas were different but not that great.
and then came the main course, we hadorderedfor dal fry, chole and paneer with naans.
out of which, dal fry was standout completely. one of the best dal fry in chennai. chole and paneer were average. but overall we felt our north indian taste buds were satiated.
we also hadorderedfor butter milk and lassi which was not cold but tasted good.
good food but service needs to be pulled definitely..!
yeah, will go again..!

i went for lunch on sunday with my friends
they took 20mins to allot seats which made me go wild in hungry but their food made me go crazy
weorderedchilli babycorn for starter which quantity was less for 4ppl to share thenorderedcheese garlic naan and butter naan with paneer achari masala .they served butter naan of 3nos in each plate which was sufficient for us and finally with tawa pulavo it was great as it was served hot but quantity and taste could be improved
they have great taste of paneer gravies
don't fail to try it out here

my advice is don't go for pulavo kind better spend that value of money in rotis and gravies

very good and clean food. i have onlyorderedin from this place. but when i have the food. i can quite imagine how clean the kitchen would be. a very very good place. their chaas is out of the world. very much on the expensive side. that's disappointing.
