seven fish

first, the parking here like every where on keywestis miserable. the ambiance was okay, but nothing special. i had the shrimp and fish over pasta dish. it was good, but again nothing special. we finished the dinner with a slice of key lime cheesecake. this was the highlight of the dinner.

seven fish is perhaps the least "keywestlike" of all the restaurants in key west. the new building, on truman ave, is sleek and modern and airy, and the total lack of acoustics leads to an incredibly loud dining experience, which i found to virtually ruin what might otherwise have been a nice evening out with old friends.
the food focuses on fresh seafood, however meat lovers also have a couple of menu options, including a steak and a meatloaf dish. the food is quite good, and is attractively plated.
service on the night of our visit could best be described as adequate. our waitress was friendly, when we saw her, but she confused several orders, possibly due to the fact we didn't want to shout our drink and meal orders out, and she didn't confirm what we ordered. a non-drinker was served alcohol, and when he complained she at first insisted it was alcohol free, which it was not. she promised to bring bread to the table, but then neglected to do so.
again, the food we received was tasty, attractive and well portioned, and that should have been enough to make for a perfectly enjoyable meal out. but it just wasn't. shouting comments for over an hour back and forth across the dinner table, being misunderstood, and having to keep repeating yourself over the din of the background noise wasn't much fun. and isn't that a big part of what dining out with friends is supposed to be about?

yay! keywestpride 2015! reservations! just off the beaten duval path, one can find seven fish, which is often overlooked by tourists, but well-known to locals and regular vacationers. did i mention reservations?

i can say, the mixed grill is excellent! this is chicken, shrimp, and veggies - all on a stick! ok, it is actually a skewer, but ever since i was a kid, i called them sticks.

now, seven fish is kinda on the pricey side, but the atmosphere plus the food makes it quite a dining experience. service is very good with friendly wait staff.

loved it! fresh, delicious and super friendly. i have been going to seven fish and keywestfor years and no place has been as consistent and great. if you are looking for a great meal in keywesteverytime, go here. definitely make reservations though as it is small

the stuff foodies dream about.. i loved this place... but then again, what is not to like? i had dinner here for the first time the night before nye and it was nothing less than i had hoped for. a little off the beaten path, you'll feel like you found a rare jewel indeed after your first meal here. the restaurant is also incredibly small--and a table here is probably the hardest to come by in kw--so be sure to make a reservation well in advance. the atmosphere is nice (slightly modern yet low-key), but that's not what people come here for: it's all about the food.

i started with a mahi fish taco, which was topped with a spicy cabbage similar to kim chee. killer. even more killer was my entree: the yellow-tail snapper special, covered with a thai curry style cream and served over a bed of fresh veggies and jasmine rice. very different than anything i had in keywestand truly exciting to eat.

if you really want a special piece of fish, see if they have any bar jack. i've done a whole lot of fishing in my day, and normally any fish in the jack family is considered 'trash fish' by serious anglers. i've got it from many of these same fisherman, however, that the bar jack at 7 fish is out of this world. unfortunately, they had none on the night i came. can't wait for next time!
