sea captain's house

what happened?. i have dined at this restaurant several times over the years and have always enjoyed thier food. i must have caught it on the wrong night because i had mediorce food , at best. theservicewas excellent, but i knew there could be problems when i arrived because there was a heated discussion taking place at the recptionist's desk between the executive chef and one of the matre'de's.

i was seated promtly with a great view of the ocean. i ordered the avocado/crab appetizer and it was served fresh, cold, and quite tasty. the sea captain's hush puppys are still the best i've eaten anywhere, and they haven't changed.. still good, but the rest of the meal was awlful.

the salad looked like it was thrown on a plate. there were no spring greens, no variety, and the "house dressing" was boring, at best. the broiled oysters were tasteless. they were not seasoned at all, and the fried oysters were prepared in a batter that was soft after frying. it was as if they were pre-fried and kept warm under a heat lamp. i had to ask for chives and crushed bacon for the baked potato, and the amount of sour cream which came with the potato could have been placed on a teaspoon.

it is truely a shame to have one of the best seafood restaurants slip. the orginial owner ( who recently passed) would have wanted the quality to remain high. if the family is going to continue operating this restaurant, they need to restore it to the same level of quality that existed in the past.

everything was wonderful! theservicewas perfect amazing she crab soup all the food was great except my husbands steak but hey- it's a seafood restaurant!

charming old beachhouse. the food was delicious, if a bit pricey. this is a place you might go for your one special dinner in myrtle beach. i will regrettably add that the dinner salad was watery and bland. it is in an old renovated house that is just beautiful. right on the beach with lot's of windows, so there is not a bad table in the place.servicewas very friendly and very good.. we also had 2 breakfasts here. the first time we had the buffet, and the second time we ordered off the menu. would really recommend choosing a breakfast off the menu rather than the buffet. the buffet is all you can eat, so choose this only if you intend to gorge yourself. the menu breakfasts are very generous, and less expensive. our waiter for the buffet was not attentive and my poor husband had to eat his homefries without ketchup. he also couldn't find the syrup for his pancakes, but that is not the restaurants fault.

nice evening out. been here twice. was a nice quiet atmosphere. we had a nice spot overlooking the ocean. i think it was a slow night.
it is considered fine dining. if dress codes need to be explained to you then maybe check out a fast food joint.

we loved it - this place! everything about it. especially the food. everything we had at the table was super fresh, tender, melt-in-your-mouth, sweet, everything that seafood should be!servicewas excellent and prices reasonable. the hot fudge cake was a good way to end our experience.

paying for the view. went there for dinner on vacation. there are very few restaurants in or around myrtle beach with a direct ocean view, so this was nice. the view was good, theservicewas good, the food was just ok. if you're going for dinner, i recommend you get there when they open, otherwise be prepared for a long wait.

2 out of 5 stars will not return.. theservicewas slow, cold food, steak was not very good, kid burger tasted like rubber, broiled shrimp had no flavor, scallops ordinary at best and again cold, shecrab soup was good but not enough crab in it for $4.95 a cup.

horrible service, horrible food, avoid if you don't look like everyone else in the restaurant!!!!. i am writing this review to make sure my voice is heard:

if you come into this "fancy " eatery looking like you belong, you probably will get great service, unlike the one we had. i wasn't even wearing anything remotely beach-like even. it was a proper shirt and shorts and my company had similar. but i guess it was not enough to assure the server or the one who seat us we are legit customers. we first sat at the bar, which was not cleaned or ready from the shift before, the bartenders and multiple others kept passing boxes around us and over our head. when we tried to order drinks, they rolled their eyes and made us wait for 15 mins before even serving us and told us we should sit at the table since they can't handle serving us food when real crowds comes.

food: for dinner, i ordered the grouper and my friend ordered meat something. i don't know about his food but my fish was overcooked to the death, not seasoned, and taste like it has been dead for years (aka, extremely fishy, you know the taste of fish when it rots?). i mean how hard is it to broil a fish correctly for a restaurant that is supposely be a "great" seafood eatery!! btw, the skin was rubbery too and kind of slimy. i couldn't even finish my food, but i didn't want to send it back because i just want to get out of there, which was delayed for half an hour since our server is much more interested in the table of nice gents next to us and kept ignoring us. wow, i mean at least try to pretend that we are people too, right? just because we forgot the golf shirts at home... 27 bucks for a rotten, unedible fish is still nowhere close to theservicewe got though.

bottom line: worstserviceever in my life!!!!! horrible fish for a seafood place, i can make a better fish in the microwave.

advice: dress like you belong in their fancy restaurant of nice gents and ladies from the 1950s. hey, who say discrimination is dead should really try this place!!

my wife and i tried the sea captains house last year based on the recommendation of a trusted friend. we still trust him. when we travel to the beach we make every attempt to locate the best fried oysters available. the sea captains house was the best last year and the best again this year.servicewas good food was excellent. we ate on monday and came back again today on thursday. we did not realize they closed at 2:30 and reopened at 4:00 and we arrived at 2:48. we decided to sit in the swing behind the sea captains house and enjoy the ocean view until they 4:00. looking forward to the oysters.

it is quite pricey for an entree, however, the portions are huge. you do get your money's worth. the atmosphere is amazing, decor speaking. the waitresses look very goofy butservicewas good. they do close at 10pm which seems early. it's not a place to frequent but it's a nice mean, nonetheless, and you can escape the smelly buffets for a lovely sit-down meal. perhaps my only real negative is that it was very loud. the smooth jazz background music was not enough to cover up the chatter of the dining crowd. overall, loved it, though.

great food and great service. this place feels like a seafood restaurant. the food was great and theservicewas amazing. we didn't do a lot of price shopping and instead went on recommendations so be aware that it's not cheap but it's expected when in myrtle beach.

great place!. just returned from myrtle beach and once again ate at the sea captain's house. we love this place and go each time we are in myrtle beach! food is great,serviceis terrific and atmosphere is wonderful!

greatserviceand location... food not worth it!. i didn't think the $70 we spent on dinner was worth it. i ordered the she crab soup and a loaded baked potato. the potatoe was great the soup had good flavor but there were way too many crab shells in it. my husband got the shrimp and it was big but was obviously cheap frozen shrimp. you'd think it woul.d be fresh considering that this restaurant is on the water! and at $11 for 7 shrimp... come on! i only said i liked it because the staff was really nice and the atmosphere lends itself to be romantic... i wouldn't go back though.
