did you know that there’s a restaurant in boston that has over 15 kinds of dipping sauces for french fries? oh yes people, saushas flavors like “saturday night chive” with fresh chives and sour cream, “cheddar duvel” with sharp and mild cheddar and duvel ale (served warm), and “ole chipotle” with chipotle in adobo, lime juice, cilantro and house made mayo. any restaurant that designs its menu around french fries is aok in my book! i camp out early to be the first one in and grab a table close to the counter. tight quarters in here, but most people are taking out.

one thing i love about boston is their great restaurant selection . the other day i went to lunch with some friends at a completely unique venue named saus. sausspecializes in - you guessed it - sauces! they have over 15 unique flavors to choose from, including: curry ketchup the vampire slayer (roasted garlic, roasted garlic oil, mayo) the pandasaus(peanut butter, soy sauce, sate saus, chili paste) samurai (chili paste, mayo) saturday night chive (fresh chives, sour cream) green monster (jalapenos, habaneros, fresh cilantro, garlic)...

saus was exactly what we needed. a comic-clad “street food” shop offering all manner of frites, poutine, snacks and sandwiches. i chose the plain frites with “samuraisaus,” a chili and mayo combination with the shrimp and scallion fritters with a deliciously refreshing chili dipping sauce, fittingly named “green monster”. the shrimp and scallion fritters tasted like the shrimp cheong fun from la maison kam fung in montreal, only fried (‘murica.) i couldn’t decide whether to dip the fritters in my samuraisausor the green monster sauce. both complimented the fritter and left a lingering heat.

saus elevates the humble potato to a fine art. belgian style fries, hand cut daily and served with your choice of condiment are their specialty. and they whole-heartedly believe in the power of the condiment, which is why they offer over 15 unique sauces, not including homemade mayo, ketchup, and gravy. try the ole chipotle (chipotle in adobo, lime juice, fresh cilantro, mayo), the sweet bill's bbq (onions, cider vinegar, spices, mesquite smoke) or the bacon parm (applewood smoked bacon, parmesan). just around the corner from faneuil hall, check outsausat 33 union st.

saus = awful. i am amazed to see how many people think that this place located next to faneuil hall serve authentic belgian fries. i have spent my childhood in belgium where my father worked for an us company.
belgian fries are supposed to be thick (crispy outside/firm inside).
what i've got atsausis a lower quality version of the fries that i can get at any mcdonald.
same thing for their waffles. sugar waffles are supposed to be chewy and not crunchy because of overcooking!
i hope they get their act together because the taste just suck right now.

not feeling the love. we passed bysausearly one morning and made a note to go back sometime when they were open because the concept sounded so good: belgian pomme frites, waffles and frikendel, with a bevy of homemade sauces.

the restaurant exudes cool; all hardwood and stainless steel, with framed cartoons everywhere. sadly, sauswas all style and no substance. the "frites" tasted just like the crap you'd get at wendys. i've had frites in belgium and these just didn't cut it - at all - but the homemade sauces were very good and made the potatoes somewhat more palatable. the salted caramel waffle was okay but not as good as other reviewers have claimed. my husband got the frikendel, which came out shriveled and burnt. very disappointing way to blow $25.

i waited patiently for the storefront to open, scouring local blogs and publications for an opening date and longing for fries that i could eat forever. i waited and waited until, finally, an opening date was set - a menu was hung on the website (eatfrites.com), and there were rumors ofsausopening in march. then it was there. a tw

simply put, i'm in love.saus, purveyor of belgian-style fries and waffles, has been the talk of the boston food blogger world all month, and i'm sure i'm just adding one more positive review to the bunch.

a new restaurant serving belgian pomme frites, fried eggs and waffles . how could i not be drawn to such an appealing trio?saus, open less than one month, is located on union street , relatively close to fanueil hall, the north end and city hall. i had eagerly followed the progress ofsauson twitter , and stopped by the other day for my first taste. and i will be returning. the restaurant is small, able to seat around 20 or so people, and has some interesting decor, lots of pictures of french comics. i like the decor, and think it injects some originality and personality into the space. you order your food at the counter, and the menu is small, concentrating on frites and waffles. pomme frites can be ordered in three sizes, costing $4, $5.50, and $7, and you receive a free sauce with your order. additional sauces, of which there are at least a dozen varieties, cost $0.75 each. the sauces range from truffle ketchup to cheddar & duvel ale . you can also get poutine , in two sizes cost

try the poutine. we got the small poutine to share and it was excellent - authentic cheese curds melting around hot, salty, crisp fries and covered in house made gravy just like i remember from my years in quebec. staff is young, friendly, energetic and knowledgeable and i also loved the belgian comic-inspired decor. this place just opened but it feels like its been an integral part of the faneiul hall scene forever.

update: every subsequent visit tosaushas been just terrific and fun. don't expect a full meal here, but to stop in for a casual street food snack as they often do in belgium, it is perfect. i've tried almost all of the different dipping sauces for the fries, and now sampled each of the waffles as well. the liege style waffle with salted caramel is the winner, narrowly edging out the fabulously decadent homemade nutella waffle. the staff knows me by name now, and probably my cardiologist as well.

saus opened last week just blocks from faneiul hall, serving three things-belgian frites, poutine, and belgian waffles. i had the opportunity to try outsauslast week along with some fellow bloggers. we were presented with multiple cones of fries with a cup of every single dipping sauce that they offer. the fries were good, i would not have objected to a little more crispness. but the wide array of house-made dipping sauces were really what made the experience. every single one of the sauces is made in-house and they range from bacon parmesan and cheddar & duvel ale to presto pesto and an intense garlicky dip aptly named vampire slayer. my personal favorites were the plain house-made ketchup, the truffle ketchup and the caramelized onion mayo. the large and medium cones of fries each come with

we just love smaller, independently-owned places that, once you step inside, seem to whisk you away to another part of the world. one of our favorite countries is belgium. we always love the time spent in antwerpen and brussels and the food, wherever you go, is always excellent. so, our recent visit to saus, the new eatery in boston was really a very pleasant surprise. two of the three founders of saus, tanya kropinicki and chin kuo. missing from the photo is renee eliah. the staff atsausis incredibly friendly. the menu atsausis pretty simple: pommes frites, poutine, deep fried egg and belgian liège waffles. liège is a major city in belgium, after which the waffles are named. belgians are huge fans of comics and graphic novels. while in brussels we visited the comic strip center , one of the most popular destinations in the capital city. the place is cozy and definitely has a european flavor with black and white photos of the famous, small storybook village of bruges . if you hav

boston's first belgian street food cafe is now open! last tuesday, sausopened its doors to the adoring, frites-hungry boston audience. located in the bustling faneuil hall/government center area, sausis in a small place, has a small menu, but is generating a lot of big buzz, very quickly. they serve made-to-order belgian pomme frites with a variety of sauces ( saus! ) as well as liege waffles. the waffles are made with pearl sugar, which gives it a crunchy, addicting texture. while the french fries are made with crack. i think. i'm not one to get obsessed with frites (although i find it hard to resist truffle fries ) but there was something about the crispy frites, the delectable dipping sauces, and the fun company of friends that made me deliriously happy when we were at saus. the fries were pretty addicting and as soon as chin , one of the owners, set it down on our table, we all turned into dip-happy frites groupies, declaring which sauces were our favorites, munching away with bi

this week has been jam-packed with lots of great eating and thursday night was no different. the folks atsausjust opened up this past week and they invited a group of food bloggers to come check them out. i've been following saus' progress for about a year now through their blog and on twitter , and they have hit a lot of delays along the way. since i work with a lot of restaurants in their zoning and licensing matters, i totally understood their frustrations and felt for them every step of the way. and i definitely understood (although not completely) their feeling of accomplishment as they opened their doors this week! our dinner was supposed to start at 6 pm but i met meghan at faneuil hall almost an hour earlier. we both had some time to kill and we wanted to get some photos of the restaurant before it got too crowded or we lost the natural light. i absolutely loved the design and decor of the restaurant. it had a modern feel and the decor included a lot of comic strips. chin (on
