the kind of food that’s good for your soul.... i did the happy dance when i experienced satchmo’s for the first time... hubby as my witness!from the instant that smokey sweet aroma slithered into my nostrils — i knew we were made for each-other. in true bbq fashion, this hole in the wall isn’t much on atmosphere. but there’s no such thing as a “classy” bbq joint... is there? it’s like putting socks on a rooster — it just doesn’t seem fitting.

omg the beans...

hubby says that good bbq is defined by the beans. these pit smoked beans are the perfect marriage of sweet and spicy. and just when you think you’ve got them pegged, there’s a smokey essence that creeps up behind you, smacks your taste buds on the butt, and whispers “good game, i win.”

did ac/dc shred this pork?

satchmo’s bbq takes up to 16 hours of slow smoking over fruit and nut wood and tedious preparation. and their homemade spice and cajun seasonings are in a class of their own. but there’s something rock and roll about the pulled pork... maybe its the crispy caramelization on random chunks marbled throughout the pile, maybe its the tender juiciness of the meat itself, or maybe ac/dc had a hand in it?

hubby’s more of a beef guy, so he made a mad-dash for the sliced brisket. the meat was lean and fork tender, and had a smooth smokey finish. if you can, order both the pork and the brisket. but hubby and i agree — if the pork and brisket were in a slap fight, the pork would probably win.

let’s get saucy...

are you a sweet, a spicy, or a sweet andspicykind of creature? well at satchmo’s you don’t have to pick. you can be one, the other, or all three!

i like to turn up the heat, so i go straight for the spicy. it’s tangy, just sweet enough, and packs just enough punch to get your blood flowing. hubby can’t take the heat, so he mixes the sweet with the spicy. his grin the size of texas and sauce dripping from his chin says it all... there won’t be any leftovers!!

don’t skip the tots...

i’ve never done drugs, but i’m pretty sure they season these crispy little devils with crack cocaine. they make you want to go home and put on your stretchy pants, and they’re worth every bite!
and with that, i’ll leave you with my favorite quote about bbq...

“spare rib anyone”

great dry-rub ribs!. husband and i split a full rack (~12 ribs) and two half-sides, coleslaw and sweet potato fries. these ribs are truly among the best we've ever had: thick (thicker than we've ever seen) rib meat, and yet tender and juicy. sugar-rubbed and slow-cooked in a smoker for 7 hours, they have a nice crust and the meat doesn't just fall off the bone, it slides off the bone! (it's more elegant than falling, so effortless and delicious. you don't need teeth!)

bbq sauces -- sweet orspicy-- are offered tableside and at the customer's discretion. the owners here want you to taste the meat first before you sauce up -- they have nothing to hide!

must come back to try the brisket and chicken.

great bbq, cole slaw to die for!. i actually know the owner jamie and this does not skew my opinion of the food whatsoever. it's downright great bbq. he's got a lot of passion and it shows. the cole slaw is absolutely amazing and the sweet potato fries absolutely yummy. pulled pork sandwich was tasty but a mix of the sweet andspicysauce seals the deal. my husband loved the jumbalaya also. i am yet to be disappointed. and love the theme...

bbq done right. don't judge an eatery by its looks, this place is great! the pulled pork and beef sandwiches are great, a good balance of smoky and tenderness. the sweet sauce is good but thespicysauce is better, just the right amount of kick but not overpowering the meat. the gumbo was good but i prefer the jambalaya. i also had the chance to talk with jamie, the man is passionate about his bbq and that's exactly the man that you want watching the pit.
