during our time in banff, my friend and i chose to have one fine dining experience and chose saltlik. we ate in the dining room, which was almost full. our hostess was friendly. our server was not. we each ordered a drink, and had to ask for water - which was never refilled. our order was taken in a fairly timely fashion, considering how busy the place was. but after our food was delivered, that was the end of even the mediocre service.
we were at a table that had an excellent vantage point of the restaurant, so were able to observe other tables with different servers getting attentive service. our orders were basic, no frills asked for nor delivered. after our meals were delivered, we only saw our server again at the end of the meal when we asked said server to package my meal and the two side dishes separately. my friend also asked for a dessert menu, which was brought after a 15 minute delay. when he finally returned, he brought everything tossed into one container. it then took another 15 minutes for him to return with the bill. he brought the portable card machine, punched the first set of numbers in, and left the machine at the table and walked away, never to return. t. finished her transaction, took her own debit receipt. i paid in cash, since there seemed to be no other option. our tip reflected the service given.
we watched - our server was not busy with his other tables, either. he disappeared into the back and rarely showed his face to take care of his tables. this service took what could have been a lovely evening and made it into something far less.
while the ambiance and music were excellent, the food wasn't worth it, given the service.
banff had far too many dining choices to make this one again.
