final straw. i have been a somewhat loyal follower of russell's since his partnership with (jonathon) hunt.goodtasting, well executed food. the problem is that no matter howgoodof a chef he may be, he does not have a strong front of the house staff. my last 5 visits have been an absolute disappointment in the service end, it has finally overshadowed the fact that my food was okay.
i visited the bothell hideaway two nights ago with my husband, and left feeling though my long relationship with this place was finally over. forgotten bread, calling us "you guys" , never delivering my husbands entree (i had to find another server to ask if they could help us find his dinner) to name a few errors. when our server was alerted that his dinner had not arrived, she came to the table, and without a word to me, pulled my plate and walked away. we sat confused. is she making a new one? won't my duck get overcooked in the heat lamp? what happened to his scallops? explanation please? anyone can be forgiving when someone takes responsibility, but this was done without apology.
our food was then served. his scallops were tasty, and my duck was rubber. our server brought a glass of wine and said, "sorry guys...this glass of red is on me". who asked for that? how about...."sorry for the confusion. how is your dinner?"
i would have asked for the manager, but there did not appear to be one. not even our dear chef could be found. to me, a conversation would not heal this. it was just time to pay the bill, leave and never go back.

this was the restaurant i chose for my 24th birthday and the food wasgoodbut wasn't outstanding. we ordered a dessert and saw the table next to us had a dessert personalized with a "happy birthday" on it so my father asked to have mine personalized as well but they refused. it was great food but the service made my night not as special as i would have liked.

the food is excellent! the building is interesting - just among corporate buildings and the building doors are like walking into an office. they appear to be doing the best they can in terms of ambiance with what they've got but in any case, with food thisgoodwho cares. our entrees didnt come out piping hot - cons of sitting at the bar i think - but the food was still phenomenal so i can only imagine it's only better hot. :) everyone was recommending the scallops so it was a must do - and it absolutely did not disappoint. i wish it was socially acceptable to lick the plates clean. i had the duck as well and could not stop talking about it all night. i'll definitely be going back!

great service, decent food. the service i had by the bartender was outstanding. i ordered the ny strip and had them add scallops. the steak was cooked perfect and had very litle fat. it was tasty but not near the best i've ever had at this price. the scallops came out undercooked and i had to send them back. sides were good, bread with dipping sauce it very good, great local wines to choose from by the glass. overall agoodexperience, but i'm very cautious with undercooked seafood.

best "barn" meal i've had in a while!. great food, interesting wine list, goodservice. what more could you ask for? every dish we had was top notch which rarely happens. i was just there and am ready to go back again just so i can try more dishes. located in a barn at the back of business park it is a little off the beaten path but worth the effort. you can actually see it from the 405 and is not that far off the highway but you are not going to stumble upon this place. the ambiance is a little rustic and dimly lit with fireplaces but has a nice feel. there are some animal heads on the walls which may creep out some people but they appear to be antiques so i don't think that bambi was killed just so you could dine here. the bottom line is that food is reallygoodfrom appetizers to deserts. russels is a rare find and a treat for all who enjoy northwest cooking.

back again. even though i can see i was the last one to write a review a few months ago, i had to come back here again to alert folks in the northend about what a hidden "treasure chef" they have in russell's right in their own "backyard" here in bothell-woodinville. my girlfriend and i last week ordered the first-of-the-season freshly flown in alaska halibut prepared with a light, sutble vinagrette that brought out such a mild, sweet flavor and texture, it seemed to melt in the mouth. as he's prone to due everytime we've dined there, he came out to talk to diners at their tables, stopped by ours, asking how we liked the fish and then to our surprise, invited us to come back into the kitchen to witness his filleting out a whole halibut.
what a maestro with a knife! he told me he had a professionally produced video posted recently on youtube called "how to fillet a salmon by russell dean lowell", and after watching it, i think it's so well demonstrated, i could try it myself. you can just tell, he's obsessive about fish and meat freshness, handling and preparation by watching him in the kitchen and hearing that he conducts cooking classes all around the seattle metro, has appeared several times on pbs (kcts) and his catering firm prepares 1000+ person dinners for huge corporate functions and private meals for international heads of state and celebrities. and yet he's humble enough to come out to our table and ask how we liked the dinner. when's the last time a chef cared that much about your meal?

command performance. after eating recently at purple's and preservation kitchen and being ultra disappointed with the rather boring food, some of which is deep-fried, my girlfriend and i have finally found a reason to stay inside the bothell-woodinville area, and not drive all the way to seattle to have a great dining experience. we revisited russell's in bothell last weekend and the service and food was totally impeccible. she had the seared chilean sea bass and i had the lamb ravioli. it was sogoodwe almost didn't want to exchange bites! looks like they've added a new sports bar area w/large screen tv and a few more bronze wildlife sculptures. chef russell circulated around the tables, came over to ours and and gave us some entertaining small talk . . . don't see that everyday at a restaurant! must say, that made us feel very welcome and appreciated.

blown away. guess russell's depends on word-of-mouth because it's set back in an office park complex, in an old restored dairy barn. on a tip from a business associate, my girlfriend and i tried russell's last weekend. guess it depends on word-of-mouth because it's set back in an office park complex, in an old restored dairy barn with wooden floors and overhead beams. has a very quiet, subdued, refined, elegant ,upscale white tablecloth home atmosphere, with one wall of glass facing a forest and bronze wildlife sculptures scattered throughout. she had sea scallops and i the new york strip with brandied cherry demi-glace and of course we shared portions . . . there are no words to describe the subtle yet powerful taste sensations the chefs here create yet we couldn't stop talking about it. simply incredible food . . . at surprisingly reasonable prices . . . i've probably paid 30-50% more at pretenious downtown bistros which didn't have as friendly or knowledgeable a wait staff . .. and finally, being a very critical (virgo) type, it shocked me not to have anything negative to say about the place.

best food in bothell, period.. i can't tell you how happy i was to stumble upon russell's in bothell. i used to have to drive to bellevue to find any fine dining establishments.

i haven't had a bad meal at russell's and i think i know why, you can really tell that russell uses the freshest and best ingredients possible. my favorite appetizer by far is the beef carpaccio. perfectly seasoned with a drizzle of olive oil, lemon, parmesan, capers, salt, pepper and incredibly tender flavorful beef. the sautéed prawns are also a favorite. for an entree the new bedford seared scallops with beurre blanc and wild mushroom risotto is an excellent choice. the scallops just melt in your mouth and the risotto is perfectly cooked.

the staff at russell's is very attentive and friendly and russell is there every night to make sure your dining experience is agoodone. check russell's out, you won't be sorry!

"disappointed". "russell's" in bothell, has the makings of a very nice establishment, but at this stage, i think you could say they are most assuredly a work in progress.
recently, we had our bothell high school reunion in the loft at "russell's" (located in the barn just off the beardslee exit in bothell.) while visiting the guests was incredibly fun, the bill left us a bit surprised.
we had a small crowd of 60. our goal was to keep it simple and elegant, while trying to keep the price affordable for our guests. we had decided to offset some of the costs.
• we brought our own table linens, napkins, and buffet skirting,
• we brought and placed our own table decorations and candles
• provided cd music
• we even brought our own happy hour snacks.
the ticket price still ended up being $93.00 per person. the food provided for dinner wasgoodbut not nearly that good.
fyi - russell's said they could accommodate up to 300 guests. if there had been 150 people we would have been cozy and left no extra room even for a small band.
when we arrived to set-up, we were seeking direction for our slide show presentation and locating a couple of bowls for our cocktail hour snacks. right away we noticed the head waitress had a bit of an attitude. in addition they were ill equipped to help us with any sort of space planning.
all in all i think "russell's" is trying hard to be something they are not. that would be more tolerable if they were just a bit more humble about their shortcomings or maybe if they charged more appropriately considering they are still, in our opinion, a work in progress.
next time, i would seek out another option, not because the venue itself wasn't nice, but in this case it just wasn't worth the price for admission.
