exquisite. i had reviewed orsay for their easter brunch and noted the inappropriate noise level (throbbing disco music) but also the fantastic cuisine, and last night we finally got to go here for dinner. i am pleased to say that the music was kept under control and combined smoothly with the background buzz of conversation. it was still fairly loud inside but not overwhelming.
we started our evening at the bar with a selection of unique hand-crafted cocktails, their cucumber-lemon zest martini being a particular standout. although we had reservations for 7:15pm, we were not actually seated until after 8 but that was okay with us, since the bartender was attentive, engaging, and easy on the eyes.
our meal began with the petite raw bar, a silver ice-chip platter of chilled seafood -- shrimp, mussels, calamari, and eight perfect raw oysters alongside a tray of sauces. this was followed by a pair of appetizers, the delicious but overpriced fois gras ($22 for a dainty portion) and a hearty dish of escargot on a bed of roasted mushrooms. of the three main courses we ordered, the winner by unanimous vote was the lamb shank on couscous with moroccan spices. the duck breast was quite serviceable and the trout was unusually generous.
to cap this meal, we ordered a single dessert, a pear terrine, light and airy genoise cake layered with roasted pears, and a glass of moscato d'asti. from beginning to end, the service was measured and gracious, with lots of warm smiles and eye contact.
