delicious food.... valet parking??? that's weird.. the atmosphere is fun, and the food is delicious. some of the best guacamole i have ever had (and i eat a lot of it). i have been to salt lake city 4 times, and i've eaten here almost every trip, sometimes twice in 3 days. i definitely disagree with another reviewers assertation that the food was "bleh" or "greasy." i certainly would never recommend someone leave here to go to chipotle. ever. ever.
i've usually eaten here for lunch, and dinner twice. this lasttimei arrived for dinner (yesterday), i encountered something odd, and out of place. a gaggle of high school boys holding a sign that said "free valet parking."...
valet parking? why? in my many travels, i've never encountered anything like this from this type of restaurant...so i was confused and suspicious. we drove around them and parked ourselves. we were approached by a teenage boy who told us it was "valet parking only"... listen, this is suspicious. nobody wants to turn their car over to a teenage boy to drive it to a parking spot 20 feet away in an empty lot, and i was driving a rental car, so i sure as heck wasn't going to.
besides, a big sign that says "free valet" seems like an optional service to me. why can't i just park my own car, like i have the other 5 times i've been here. his answer was that "they are responsible for the car if they park it, but if they don't park it, they're not responsible." ok.... i'm ok with that. i have insurance, and i'm responsible for my own car literally every other place i've ever been. i can handle that responsibility. i am comfortable with that responsibility. i am not comfortable with a 16 yr old boy driving the renal car that i'm liable for. no thanks.
if he had pushed, we would have left. and we would have been tremendously disappointed to miss out on the food, and an opportunity to support this local establishment, which we love. as it is, he got frustrated that i was questioning the valet arrangement, and he gave up the fight and allowed us to stay parked there. we had already parked. what were we supposed to do, drive back and let him drive the car to the exact same spot we had already parked in and then feel obligated to tip him for it?
anyway, i still gave the restaurant a 5 star rating, because restaurant experiences are all about the food, and this place has it covered!!!
i would definitely share with the owners though, that the akward valet arrangement makes customers feel sort of taken-advantage of. it's not necessary, and i'm not sure who those boys were, but it felt sort of "fund raiser-y"... first, i have no cash, ever, and it's an awkward position to put the customer in. i would expect it at a fancy dining place, but i was really thrown for a loop here. and second, if it's some sort of fundraiser or donation program, it should be completely voluntary, and it should be very clear what that money is being collected for. this may be part of some weird utah parking sub culture, that locals understand, but the establishment is a huge draw to out of town visitors, who are very put off by this.
