bleh. really hated this place and was disappointed big time because i'd heard and read so many great things. the food was just straight up weird and not good. the chocolate/ground nutsmolewas a good example. i had carnitas which were just "ok" and my friend had an enchilada, and actually threw it up in my car on the drive home. fun times.

mind blowing flavors at this top notch spot. i wish i lived in salt lake city so i could eat here all the time. while there's probably nothing bad on the menu here, don't just order typical mexican fare like tacos and burritos. get amoledish. the amarillomoleis out of this world- the type of sauce you'll remember forever and tell your friends about. you might even feel compelled to tell other diners on the way out that they should order it too. we had a pork rib special with that sauce today and it was like an out of body experience. perfectly cooked, the pork fell off the bone in one clean swipe with my fork. and that sauce... wow. eat here - you won't regret it.

i think i must have driven past red iguana a million times on the way to the salt lake city airport (via north temple). its red-yellow dive front seemed to overflow with white caucasian business suits at lunch hour. i never would have walked in if it weren't for houston davidson (lover of music and all things spanish, mexican and portuguese) who adamantly loved red iguana. chips and salsa. complimentary and addicting! side of fried plantain, $1.75. the plantains were amazing - sugary sweet, cinnamony, dense, flavorful. wow. what's up with the whipped cream and cherry on top?! poblano plate, sour cream chicken enchilada, taco a la iguana, beef tostada, guacamole, $12.45. yes, it's unadventurous, but...but, with any new restaurant (mexican or not), it is wise to always have a safety dish (as insurance...) and this was it. the guacamole was the best guac i've ever had. the enchilada sauce was tasty and reminded me of chinese sweet 'n sour sauce. the tostada was major comfort food.molepo

love the moles here

the moles here are amazing, the choice is about of 7-8 different types. even mangomoleis there. remember there are two locations, both equally good and close by in salt lake city. so close to the airport for a quick driveby.

love themolehere, the coloradito is my favorite. plan ahead or bring good company to wait in line with as it's always busy at meal time. red iguana 2 is not far and they have the same menu as far as i can tell.

we went to the red iguana at the suggestion of the airbnb host and also the numerous reviews online. the wait was long but well worth it. this is not your regular texmex. we both got molé sauce on our enchiladas and a side of rice and beans. enchilada verdes and enchilada amarillas. the flavors were out of this world. very rich and complex. we suggest this restaurant as a must if you happen to come to salt lake city

no idea there were so manymolecombinations one could eat. this place offer around eight different kinds. then you have choices of chicken, fresh turkey or pork loin to choose from. and that's just a small sample from the menu of this wicked good mexican place. also a huge selection of tequilas to choose from for your margaritas. you'll need to wait around 20-30 mins to get inside but it's worth it.

i can't think of another mexican restaurant that is hyped as much as red iguana. but i have to be honest, i've never had anything here that really wow'd me. i've had severalmoledishes, tacos, etc. sure, it's good. but nothing special.

this valley is filled with mediocre mexican food restaurants, and i see this and just another one.

mole verde is amazing. i have been eating at red iguana for years. i have also been challenging myself to find a comparable or better mole... not just in utah. to this point i have not.

if you are new to red iguana and theirmolesauces, get the sampler and have fun trying the different types (green, yellow, red, brown...).

you may think that themolesauce will be too much when they bring out your food souped in it. however, the flavors are not overpowering and work with the enchiladas ordered (regardless of carne asada, chicken, etc.).

mole holds up well the next day if you have leftovers.

the red iguana has other great meals that don't contain mole, but i stick to themoleverde mostly.

the only weak point is the salsa. i give it a 7/10 because it is good but not great. i feel like it could use fresher ingredients.

visiting salt lake city & saw the red iguana was highly rated. it's pretty amazing. the food is spectacular, and the service is upbeat and attentive.
i'm in slc for a conference and visited red iguana on a wednesday; there was a 30-min wait! of course the actual wait was shorter, that's a good sign for a restaurant (don't go to an empty restaurant). since i was alone, i was seated in a little alcove between the main dining areas. it'd be great for a couple, but a little odd for me. also, i didn't get to experience much of the restaurant's ambiance.
my server was tony, and if you visit, ask for him. i could not have been happier with the service. he was polite and attentive, yet patient with my questions about the menu and their signature moles.
i ended up ordering the enchiladas amarillas. they're pork carnitas enchiladas covered in themoleamarillo, which is sweet and spicy due to both habaneros, raisins and bananas. it's complex and balanced with the sweetness of the fruits countering the spiciness of the chiles. you won't be disappointed if you give it a try.
i only wish i had more time in slc to try more of the dishes.

never been disappointed. about two or three years ago, my family and i decided to check out the red iguana. we had heard numerous good stories about it from relatives, so we had high hopes. when we arrived at the restaurant, my family was slightly dismayed by the appearance of it. but nevertheless, we joined the long queue in the cold with high expectations. the restaurant was slightly cramped, but the food definitely made up for it. my brother and i couldn't decide what to order, so we followed in my father's footsteps and ordered the pistachio mole, the special that day. themolewas amazing and undeniably perfection, despite the strange green color of it. before going to the red iguana, i hated mole. i thought it was disgusting and wondered how people could eat it. but the red iguana opened up my eyes, or my taste palette, and i am now a lover of all things mole. i've been back a few times and i ordered different types of mole, and i have never been disappointed. i definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone. do not be dismayed by the appearance or the lines; the food is definitely worth it.
