the smoked meat restaurant market is saturated in melbourne, but not on the mornington peninsula, so its a nice point of difference to the vast number of wineries you can dine at.  definitely tricky to find as you have to drive into theservicestation and out the back.  essentially its a giant shed, but doesnt feel cold or uninviting.  there are picnic style tables spread out, a cosy couch area and a nice section for younger kids. i had the beef brisket, fries, philli cheese steak sandwich (a special) and potato salad.  all of which were great.  the meat was tender, servings generous and i found the prices reasonable. i would compare them to similar places ive been to (le bon ton, fancy hanks, meatmaiden etc).  just about every table had families with babies or toddlers, yet it wasnt noisy and the kids had somewhere to play.  nice to see more places welcoming families with play areas, making you feel like you can take your kids out and eat a great meal at the same time.  i think they could probably squeeze some more tables in, as it is quite popular and they had to turn people away when i was there.  they are also super strict with their timings, you basically get 1.5hrs to order and eat and then they start hurrying you up, so just be aware of that in case you or you mates are latecomers.

food was really good, well cooked and marinated, the size of the portions were just right although someone might say they were slightly smaller than standard. menu is straight forward but a bit too simple with only pork, beef and chicken to choose from and all the food is served in trays to share. found a bit weird that all items except for mains are priced in the menu, for prices for mains look at the board wall. also, dislike the order at the counter approach. good and quickserviceand small kids play area with toys is useful.

red gum bbq was definitely one of my favourite bbq restaurants; they had a wide range of meat options as well as side dishes. we ordered their pulled pork, chicken wings, lamb, beef brisket, brisket chilli cheese fries, and a few other sides. all of the meat dishes were deliciously smoky, tender, and more-ish!servicewas friendly also. it was definitely a must visit while in mornington peninsula.

that was a special feed and what an awesome setup. have been wanting to come for ever but just never got round to it. food came out so quickly andservicewas great. chicken wings, brisket, pork shoulder ribs, mac and cheese, pulled pork... all unbelievable. i’ll be back

we were very underwhelmed with both theserviceand food. ribs were dry, caesar salad had no anchovies and bitter dressing. sold out of brisket at 6pm. nothing to write home about.

we had a lovely time here.servicewas on point and food was delicious! we had a group booking of 10 - my family walked away with happy tummies and we can’t wait to go back again. the beef brisket was tender, succulent and melt in your mouth soft. sweet cornbread with honey butter was absolute perfection! mac and cheese was creamy and the house made sausage was delicious with a mild spice. everything we ordered, we enjoyed.
a little play area for the kids helped keep the kids entertained, which is always a plus! highly recommend this place for bbq lovers, families or groups.

we liked it. it’s a very good place. nice big open space with some deft touches. i can’t tell you how much i love the wood and creepers on the back wall. the meats were lovely, particularly the sausage and pulled pork. beans were good, the corn was excellent too. servicewas lovely and the price well within expectations too. we had a great time and will return for sure.

great southern bbq on the mornington peninsula, pork and beef that just melt in the mouth they are on the expensive side, so after you take a reasonable drive and can find them tucked at the back of aservicestation the bbq is good.

nice set up in a big shed. bring a jacket at it does get cold at night.

we enjoyed the pulled pork which was nice and moist, followed by the mac n cheese which was and creamy but the corn bread the highlight it was so fluffy and delicious. unfortunately the pork ribs were only served just warm and not tender probably needed about an additional 30 min cook time, the brisket everyone raving about was actually dry and chewy and again served only warm. overall i felt that the portions were a little on the small side too.
overall the ambience and customerservicewere on  point.

been here several times and always had a wonderful experience - great, friendlyserviceand good food. when we went sunday for dinner we were greeted warmly however the waitress assigned to us was terrible. not only was she unfriendly and uncheerful, she was annoyed when we said we hadn’t finished ordering (as she cut us off before we finished placing our order). in addition she did not bother to inform our group (6 kids, 4 adults) that the chicken wings and sausages were quite spicy and may not be suitable for kids.
i felt like saying something to another staff, however i did notice she was equally unfriendly to a nearby table.
i think this made our food seem less tasty and our experience has made me question whether to come back as there are plenty of other options in this price range with much better service.

after deciding on a 90 minute drive to try this place we were not disappointed at all.
the location is behind aservicestation but it seems to be set in an old mechanics or workshop that has been brilliantly converted. this is a place for atmosphere and taste, and sets up hopes for amazing food.
the brisket and most meats are slow cooked in a smoker and the wait is most certainly worth it.
the ales and local produce that are paired together are very nicely done and the seating was fun and best use of space.
the food.....amazing. we ordered 5 mains for 4 adults and really thought we may have over ordered but the portions are a bit too small (a credit to the taste maybe?). the brisket sausage with cheese and jalapeño was a standout, until we tried the brisket sandwich which was just stunning. the pulled pork was prefect, the only let down was the chicken. we overdid it with the fries that we loaded with chilli, cheese and brisket, but we were full and well refreshed and finished with a great coffee.
it’s quirky it’s fun it’s amazing food, and sets up a nice day in the mornington peninsula.
will be back with a big group!!..

great looking place, décor done to lovely standard.servicewas prompt, smiley and well informed. the young lad who served us was informative and offered good suggestions which is always helpful. we ordered the pork, the brisket, the fried pickles and the coleslaw. we were a bit disappointed with the pork and coleslaw, both had little oomph or anything stand out. the coleslaw would have been sitting for a while due to it's limpness. the pork was just bang average at best. the fried pickles, a first for us, are a bad idea. pickles need to remain zesty, sharp and to the point. deep frying them disturbs their quality. the brisket was the winner by a small margin purely due to its texture. flavour was again lacking. all dishes needed a hefty whack of hot sauce to bring them to life. overall experience was decent, polite friendly staff, quickserviceand a lovely looking place. doubt we'd return though.

location and setting is great which is a pity that the quality of the food andservicewasn't to match. sold out of brisket at 4pm (for a place that's open till night) but then magically the table next to us had ordered and eating brisket at 5pm when we were leaving. the beef rib was extremely well done but overpriced. the pork ribs were a let down, as were the chips which were all overcooked and loose ends.

overall extremely overpriced for the quality of food, disappointing as the fit out and setting is first class.
