4.5/5
where's the 4.5 when i need one? red gum bbq is definitely so much more better than just a 4, but unfortunately it does not meet the requirements for a perfect score. why you ask? the chips, that's why. it was not hot, nor was it crunchy and while the beef brisket and sour cream were fantastic with the chips, the limp chips just didn't impressed me much.

save and except for the issue with the chips, everything was excellent. the beefribsand porkribsjust fell of the bone and into our mouth. full of flavour and wonderfully tender. you know what else was tender and moist? the cornbread. one of the best i ever had. just the right amount of grittiness from the cornmeal, with a crispy top and buttery texture.

the mushrooms were a surprise favourite - meaty, juicy and well-seasoned. it was a pleasant departure from all those meats in front of us.

the place was packed during the lunch service. we arrived just before 1pm and had to wait for an hour and a half for a table, and by the time we finished our meal, the place was still buzzing. reservation is a must!

took the family there for lunch. easy parking, nice venue, plenty of space. we were put on a shared table when there were plenty of other tables completely empty, and were still empty when we left an hour later. portions were quite small for what you paid for. lambribswere small and fatty, hardly any meat on it. chicken wings were underwhelming. the pulled pork was good. coleslaw was good. nachos for the kids were kids were received well, but the chips however were not. staff were pleasant and friendly, and came over a couple of times to see if we needed more drinks. i know it's minor, but a pet hate is the credit card surcharge. i have reviewed a much better place than this in terms of taste, portion sizes and ambience. i won't be in a hurry to return.

attended with four adults and two child for a mid week rustic experience with bbq meats.

the place is tucked behind a servo and it had plenty of parking which was great.

we entered and were promptly seated to our reserved table. there was a quick explaintion of the food and drink menus but advised noribswere available.

we ordered the pulled pork, beef brisket, half chicken with sides of a large chips, coleslaw, pasta salad and pickles.

meat:
the portion size was terribly small for the pulled pork and beef brisket. this being two slices of brisket and two spoon falls of pulled pork that was mediocre. the chicken was moist but lacked flavour.

the sides were also disappointing with the chips being burnt and discoloured, broccoli was thrown in a bowl with a sauce and the pasta salad was chewy and bland.

the group was honestly disappointed in the experience and saddened we felt the basics were not done properly. we all won't be returning.

red gum is the only place that does decent tasty barbecue on the mornington peninsula. they use high quality ingredients such as free range meat and standout by making a lot of their ingredients by scratch (i.e mayonnaise). gf, dairy free and vegetarian options available.
🍽 st. louis porkribs- juicyribswith a delightful smokey char on the outside. cape grim beef brisket - meat falls apart and melts in the mouth. has a texas style rub on the outside which gives it a really nice flavour. coleslaw - a classic but a favourite. the mayonnaise makes a difference.
if you’re after a rustic and delicious meal look no further than red gum.

forgot to take a photo. me and my dad went here last year and we loved it! i’d say it’s decently priced. pork ribs, pulled beef, chips, a beer, 2 coffees and a dessert were about 100 bucks. the porkribswere my favouriteribsi’ve ever had, the pulled beef was average. my dad had a beer and i had a coke. the beer was large and incredibly strong. it was about 3.2 average drinks so we ended up getting coffees and dessert. absolutely amazing. staff was polite.

we had the brisket, ribs, buffalo wings & pulled pork- the bbq meats were all very good with theribs& brisket excellent. however the chips were very poor. appeared to have been pre cooked and then kept barely warm- quite soggy. the sides are underwhelming and overpriced. red gum is quite expensive for what you get. the environment is pleasant with shared tables, though the table we sat at was quite sticky giving the impression it had not been cleaned. the staff seem unaware of their customers, appearing to ignore attempts to attract their attention. unlikely to return

came here a couple of times already and the food was great. this time we wanted to try again on a cold night, wonderful! as usual, there were some specials on the menu that were sold out, but luckily my favourite beef brisket was still available. ordered a few serves and did not disappoint. the sausage was spicy but very tasty and the porkribswere not bad. the corn bread with the butter was just yummy and the crunch broccoli salad a must try! overall, the good was great and the cider was just nice to cut the fatty taste away!

love the decor of this place but the entrance isn’t clearly marked and you will probably miss it finding it as it’s situated in a large warehouse behind the servos. ordered the brisket, ribsand buffalo wings. the buffalo wings were devine! couldn’t say that about anything else though as it was all cold and because of this reason, the food wasn’t enjoyable. the menu is also on the tad expensive side and we had to share a table with another couple, which was a little but uncomfortable.

nice set up in a big shed. bring a jacket at it does get cold at night.

we enjoyed the pulled pork which was nice and moist, followed by the mac n cheese which was and creamy but the corn bread the highlight it was so fluffy and delicious. unfortunately the porkribswere only served just warm and not tender probably needed about an additional 30 min cook time, the brisket everyone raving about was actually dry and chewy and again served only warm. overall i felt that the portions were a little on the small side too.
overall the ambience and customer service were on  point.

**please note! the red gum beef rib is a clear cut 10/10 dish! if you go to red gum, get it! 😉
.
red gum has been on my bbq hit-list for a long time since they opened! 😎 word on the street was they climbed to melbourne's best bbq spot within a year! 🔝 so naturally they caught my attention in a big way! 😏 ive long been a bbq porkribsfanatic, you have it on the menu? ill order it! no doubt! 😍 what a venue! 🙌🏽 massive rustic-styled warehouse eating space, decked out with large wooden tables and even a lounge! you just know you're in a smokehouse! 😁 so.. down to business 😎
.
☑ 6.9/10.. overpriced 😔 please note that this review is in comparison to other joints on the bbq scene! ☝🏽 the beef brisket is gorgeous! 😍 juicy, soft, perfectly cooked and literally falls apart in your mouth! 🤤 but, now come the negatives.. 😑 tbh pretty decent let down 😔 there's one thing that holds a lot of weight with my reviews. it's called 'value for money' 💰 the first term that comes to my head unfortunately for red gum is, overpriced 🤔 ill start with my beloved porkribs🐷 dont get me wrong, amazing flavour and really good sauced ribs! but just too small a serving for $36.. 😕 you could pick up just as good tasting pork ribs, with more flesh though for a better price and closer to home 😲 the sides were also slightly overpriced, again great flavour but just not enough portion-wise for what you're paying 🤔 as much as i don't want to admit it, it was a decent let down 🤔
.
💡 tip - you'll wanna hear this tip! 😎 the reason i left the 'beef rib' out was because it was a clear cut 10/10 dish and simply needs its own review for the sake of being known! ☝🏽 so here it is, if you go to red gum, get the beef rib! 🐄 at $37 its the only dish worth every dollar! best i've ever had! 🙌🏽😎

great experience! you can smell the delicious waft of barbecuey goodness from the carpark. the beefribswere juicy. the buffalo wings tasted great with the blue cheese dressing. the loaded fries were full of flavour but a little soggy. the only dish that could be improved is the pork ribs. the barbecue sauce was a bit too sweet. overall- fantastic.

location and setting is great which is a pity that the quality of the food and service wasn't to match. sold out of brisket at 4pm (for a place that's open till night) but then magically the table next to us had ordered and eating brisket at 5pm when we were leaving. the beef rib was extremely well done but overpriced. the porkribswere a let down, as were the chips which were all overcooked and loose ends.

overall extremely overpriced for the quality of food, disappointing as the fit out and setting is first class.

poor customer service. plenty of table staff on a not so busy day, just all dawdling around - yet none was able to approach us to take our order. we asked a waiter if he can take an order, said he can't. well if you can't then surely you could approach another waiter/waitress to take our order. but no. nothing was said. so being patient, we waited for 30mins... ended up approaching a staff who stood at the bar if she can take our order but she gave us a snobby attitude like it's not her job.
when we were able to order, some of their items on menu were not available. why have items on menu when they are not available at 6pm? which is for some of us, peak time for dinner. no beefribsso we opted for the pork ribs, which tasted like dry stale carcass. their mac and cheese was cheesy but lacked flavour including salt. expensive for the quality and quantity.

not going to be sorry, but this place is awful. you want american bbq? better off serving yourself in the kitchen then wanting to get some attention for some decent service.
