pizzapapalis

on a recent visit to detroit, i was told to try pizza papalis for theirchicagostyle deep dish pizzas. we were 4 people and had the gourmet chicken deep dish pizza...it takes 45 mins to make so it's better to get the order in quickly. while we waited for the pizza we had mozzarella cheese sticks and feta spinach garlic bread with a pitcher of some chilled beer. the mozzarella sticks were really crispy and cheesy hitting just the right spot with the chilled beer. then came the pizza and it was just delicious, with the mariana sauce made so well and filled with chicken..yumm.. service was really friendly and helpful.

while it might be the closest thing to achicagostyle pizza in michigan, it's not close enough to warrant the price or 35 minute wait. the crust was just bland city, and the texture was completely wrong. i've eaten at all of the bigchicagonamesakes (gino's east, pizzeria uno, lou malnatti's, and giordano's, which is my favorite). this style is more like giordano's pizza than the others, but again, the crust is wrong, the toppings are of a lower quality, and the cheese is too moist. just nothing to write home about. and, the breadsticks were a flat-out "wtf?!?" disappointment. dry (had clearly been sitting around a while reaffirmed by the fact they came 2 minutes after we ordered them), near flavorless, and served with sysco/gfs cheese whiz?!? i don't even... ick. our service was ok, at least. and the atmosphere is pleasant enough. doubt i'll be back anytime soon, though.

you don't come this close tochicagoand not get achicagodeep dish! the search for the best ended at greektown! pizza papalis taverna puts out the best deep dish i have had in the states! the greek salad was spectacular as well. i will crave this pizza... yummo

if you’re a fan of chicago-style, this is one of the few places outside ofchicagothat does it right. if it wasn’t for buddy’s, pizza papalis would be my detroit pizza pick. even with buddy’s, it’s high on the list.

a happy mistake. we ordered a meat lover's but got a gourmet instead. the server realized the mistake and offered to put through another order, but not wanting to wait another 45 minutes we took the gourmet.

i don't like feta, but wow, was this a great pizza. to think that deep dish pizza is unique tochicagowould be a mistake. pizza is pizza not matter where it's made, and the folks at pizza papalis serve up some great pies.

as a bonus, our server was great. she was polite and cheery all the way through; even went the extra mile to try and make up for the pizza mix up.

papalis is best. papalis along with giordano's inchicagohas the best deep dish pizza in america. come hungry early; expect 30 - 40 min wait for a deep dish. it's fantastic
