totally "heavenly" pancakes. late in writing this review - ate here about 2 months ago. saw the high stats on this place on urbanspoon so headed down on a saturday morning. had a wait but it ended up being well worth it. my dinner partner and i ended up sitting at the bar for breakfast - very popular place. theservicewas amazing, spoke with quite a few of the staff and they obviously enjoy working here. i had ordered the short stack with banana slices. whoa - my short stack consisted of two of the largest pancakes i had ever seen with sliced bananas, whipped cream and caramel drizzled over the top. and...the pancakes live up to the "heavenly hot cakes" name - the best pancakes i have ever had in my life! additionally, they were so huge, i had to take some of my breakfast home with me, pancakes! we had such a great time that when the hostess suggested taking home a couple of slices of pie, we agreed and were not disappointed. would highly recommend, have already in fact and excited to go back.

we were downtown in slc and needed to kill some time. a search for someplace to eat breakfast led us here. the café is at the ground floor of a rather mundane looking multi story apartment building. upon opening the door, we were hit with a whoosh of delightful breakfast diner aroma. i briefly considered staying inside for the pleasant smell and diner atmosphere, but we had somewhere to be later, and the place was packed. if we wanted seating anytime soon, we would have to sit on the patio outside. slightly cool temperatures meant the patio was almost empty.

theservicewas friendly and prompt. the food was delicious! my son ordered a sausage breakfast sandwich. ordinarily, breakfast sausage is not my favorite substance (using that term on purpose). this breakfast sausage, on the other hand, was remarkably good. i had two eggs, poached to perfection, and a heavenly hot cake that completely lives up to its name. i am looking forward to a future visit, and recommend you try it.

holy wow! a waffle with bacon inside...am i in heaven?

theservicewas great and the food was amazing. my home fries were just salty enough and the waffle was a gift from the breakfast gods. this restaurant has apartments above it and if i ever need to move to utah i'm looking here first.

don't set your expectations too high. i blame it on my high expectations, of reading many many other reviews of this place and seeing it on list after list of must-eat places in salt lake. breakfast is not my meal of choice, partly because i'm not a huge fan of eggs or buttermilk pancakes and partly because i don't want to wake up early to go out to eat on a saturday morning. but my companion was a huge fan of breakfast foods so we decided to give it a try together and i hoped her love for breakfast would rub off on me.

judging by it's popularity, i assumed it would be busy on a saturday morning so i showed up a little early to get our names in. unfortunately it wasn't early enough, as i didn't understand the system of checking in and the woman walking around collecting names wasn't exactly organized in her system of walking around finding people that looked new and asking for their names. i ended up standing there for at least five minutes before she discovered me alone by the door looking around wondering what was going on. it was crammed right by the two doors and people were standing shoulder to shoulder, hovering over the poor patrons that were seated right next to the waiting area. i quickly prayed that i would not be seated there. how uncomfortable! so to avoid the awkwardness and heat of the body to body situation in the ten foot space, i stepped outside to wait for my companion in the cold.

after what seemed like double the "twenty minute wait" we were let in and pointed to a dirty table in the booth section and i said my thank yous for being seated in the most comfortable area. but if only theservicehad been more comfortable. thankfully we had looked at the menu online before arriving because our waitress arrived a quick minute after we had been given our menus and expected us to be ready. so we gave her our orders and hoped that there wasn't anything more eye-catching on the menus we were given. thanks to my lovely companion, the time in waiting for our food went by quick enough and soon our plates were sitting in front of us without so much as a "can i get you anything else?"

i had the pot of gold with a side of pancakes and she had the pancake topped with bananas and caramel syrup and a side of scrambled eggs. considering our experience thus far, i was surprised at how much i enjoyed my plates of vegetables and potatoes topped with fried eggs and country gravy. the sausage in the gravy was absolutely delectable, soaking in the salty creamy goodness and bursting in my mouth. the eggs were a nice surprise hidden under the gravy and were cooked very well. i couldn't stop eating mine! but when it came time to start in on my pancakes, there was no syrup to be found. i had noticed earlier that a waiter asked for a syrup bottle off of someone elses table to give to a different customer so i assumed they were short on bottles (at a breakfast place famous for pancakes) and kept an eye out for my waitress to ask her for a bottle of my own. she never reappeared so i finally started in with just the butter on top. the pancakes were good! not incredible like many others claim- i found nothing to be astounding or clever- but they were well cooked and on the larger side. i definitely felt mine could've used some syrup but i would've had to wait until my check came to ask as our waitress never returned.

without asking if we wanted dessert or anything else or bothering to see if these two women would want separate checks, our waitress suddenly appeared again, check in hand. i asked for a slice of pie to go and she hurriedly got that and the updated reciept for me. though she had not been around our entire meal, i suddenly felt a sense of urgency, that her number one goal was for us to get out of that booth and turn it over to someone else. but because i hadn't seen my companion in about a year, we wanted to spend more time catching up (and let her finish her meal). and suddenly our waitress was by our side every few minutes, asking if we needed anything else or more water. where was that attentiveservicewhen we needed it? she then brought me an unneeded bag for my leftovers and the hints trying to get us to leave were getting uncomfortable. her tactics worked and we ended up leaving earlier than we would've liked, not wanting to feel rude for sitting at a table, eating food we'd paid for and chatting (how inconsiderate of us).

maybe it wasn't the high expectations. maybe it's that i value goodserviceas much as i value good food, and if they don't go hand in hand i'm disappointed. when i returned home and handed my husband the slice of pie, i couldn't help but list off the many things that had irked me over our meal. "but how was the food?" he asked. "unfortunately it was great! i just don't know if i want to go back there for it," i said as i sunk my fork into a delicious piece of coconut cream pie that i wished i had bought a whole plate of. now if i ever want that pie again, i'll have to brave the tiny waiting area and rude and inattentive staff to get it.

family owned goodness!. visited penny ann's for the first time today with a couple of friends.servicewas wonderful! food was amazing! i got the penny pot potatoes and it was huge, and the potatoes were perfectly seasoned and crispy! just how i like 'em. the dish included either toast or two "heavenly cakes". i went with the "heavenly cakes" and they certainly lived up to the name! they were ginormous, soft, and delicious! i've never been a big pancake fan but these have changed my life! :) my friends got the stuffed french toast (pecan caramel was the special of the day) and it was dusted with powdered sugar and smelled and tasted delightful! so happy we have found this fantastic place. breakfast menu all day saturday (closes at 2). will be coming here again!

awesome! will be back!. here's to my very first review. i've been meaning to start to trying new places around town and happened to be out and about for breakfast, noticed the rave reviews about this place off urbanspoon, so i stopped in. i don't regret this decision.

we walked in to a rather bustling place for 9 am on a tuesday. it's very tiny and seriously a hole-in-the-wall place, just like what i was hoping for. we were seated promptly and had our drinks brought out. everything on the menu sounded great that it was hard to decide. all the reviews said to try the sour cream pancakes or "heavenly hot cakes". our server kallan was sweet and quick to suggest all sorts of options. he almost convinced me on the biscuits and gravy since both are scratch homemade. i ended up ordering the oregon state omelet and my friend got the big breakfast.
they brought us the pancakes first right before the rest of our meal. they were smaller than most diners which i liked! the idea that i could potentially finish what i ordered instead of having three pancakes the size of your head attached with the unrealistic expectation of ever even finishing them, it was a nice change. and the taste? so. delicious. i'm picky about pancakes, but i ate them both without regret. they tasted homemade with that flat-top stove "flavor", if you will. crispy outside while fluffy inside.
the omelet was a large portion size, easily could feed two (or just lunch for me later!). the homemade sausage gravy was tasty and the home fried potatoes were also yummy. crispy, crunchy potatoes, and you could tell they were cut from a whole potato, not out of some frozen bag. i could only eat half the omelet while my friend devoured his whole plate. i contemplated ordering a slice of homemade pie since many reviews also recommended this, but didn't end up doing so with the silent promise to return and do just that.
my coffee was constantly full and i believe it was the owners themselves that were occasionally walking around doing the refills but i didn't get a chance to know for sure. we left full and completely satisfied with ourserviceand experience.
a healthy side note: not sure if they have this option everywhere, but they do have sugar-free syrup if you're interested. and also i overheard the folks behind us order tomato slices in place of the home fried potatoes - in case you'd like to go the healthy route. (which i say is mistake at this place!)

in the end, i was very impressed with the quality of the food, the fantastic service, the overall quaint-ness of the place, and the general atmosphere. i even overheard (yes i eavesdrop around me) the booth next to us mention something wrong about their order and without hesitation the waitress was willing to cover that part of the check with her money, and fix the whole situation. the customer declined saying it was okay, but just that idea that she was willing to go that above and beyond without hesitation speaks volumes. i work and went to school for the food industry, and this place made a very positive and lasting impression on me. i will be back to try something new and to order a slice of pie!

i get it now--wow!. although i had been to penny ann's twice before, i simply wasn't that overwhelmed. i had read so many overwhelmingly positive reviews, but the first two times i went, i just was not that impressed with any aspect of the restaurant experience that was provided. the first time i went, i had the reuben sandwich, which was completely satisfactory, but, again, not spectacular. the second time my wife and i went for breakfast, and enjoyed the meal, but it was marred somewhat by the long time it took for the meal to emerge from the kitchen.

however, we went again on saturday, mostly as a result of the discount coupon we had. i'm so glad i gave them "one last chance." theservicewas friendly and prompt (from a young man named kalon). the food came out in a reasonably speedy manner, and was fantastic. i again had the reuben, and was bowled over this time by its freshness, flavor, and the quality of its ingredients. my wife had the chicken parmesan. we have had this dish at other restaurants in the valley at double the cost that were nowhere near as good as the one that penny ann's serves. the accompanying spaghetti was cooked perfectly (al dente), the tomato sauce was a revelation, and the perfectly breaded chicken cutlet was the size of texas. what a value!

however, the high point of the meal was the dessert--chocolate peanut butter pie ($2.99). this was truly one of the best desserts i have ever had.

i can't wait to get back to penny ann's!! i strongly recommend this restaurant.

the food was ok. most of the customers were older (seniors), and me and my friend were the only ones under 35.servicewas bad--three groups that came after us got their food and left before we even had our food on the table! pancakes weren't well cooked. besides that, the food was good but there was nothing special about it. you can get the same good meals at most other breakfast/brunch places.

this place is so awesome! i had the club sandwhich with onion rings and my husband had the breaded pork tenderloin with mashed potatoes, veggies and a roll. we took home a piece of sour cream apple pie because we were stuffed from dinner. with drinks it all was just a little over $30! wonderfulserviceand incredible (yet simple) food. this is going to become a regular, i can feel it.
