totally "heavenly" pancakes. late in writing this review - ate here about 2 months ago. saw the high stats on this place on urbanspoon so headed down on a saturday morning. had a wait but it ended up being well worth it. my dinner partner and i ended up sitting at the bar for breakfast - very popular place. the service was amazing, spoke with quite a few of the staff and they obviously enjoy working here. i had ordered the short stack with banana slices. whoa - my short stack consisted of two of the largest pancakes i had ever seen with sliced bananas, whipped cream and caramel drizzled over the top. and...the pancakes live up to the "heavenly hot cakes" name - the best pancakes i have ever had in my life! additionally, they were so huge, i had to take some of my breakfast home with me, pancakes! we had such a great time that when the hostess suggested taking home a couple of slices of pie, we agreed and were not disappointed. would highly recommend, have already in fact and excited to go back.

it must of been a bad day so i won't judge for the staffs attitude this trip. when we arrived we were greeted, if that's what it was, the hostess. no smile, no welcome, just her saying its a forty-five minute wait, and you will have to wait outside. we asked if we needed a reservation or if she was taking names? she showed us her clip board and so we gave her our name assuming that is what she was doing. scary place to be at first but the wait was quite entertaining. the host never determined the wait time by what was happening in the resturant, but just by her imagination. never once did i see an employee smile, that is until we tipped our server, and we gave her $50.00 if she'd smile for us just once. we got her to smile and she got her money. other than that, we really were entertained by the hostess and how she did her job. really it was entertaining and so was the rest of the staff. place was packed and so it must have good to great food so we decided to wait and take the chance. after a short twenty-two minutes, not forty-five to and hour like the hostess told us and other guests, we were seated and getting our morning coffee. we were sat at a dirty table, but it wasn't something that bothers these seasoned "foodies" and we just asked to get it wiped and it was. by the way, the resturant was quite busy, especially for its size. we ordered our meal and then about five minutes later our server came back and told us that they 86'ed the potatoes because they were out and offered us cottage cheese or tomatoes instead. we asked for potatoes, french fries style and she said yes that was possible. our meal was delivered in a decent amount of time and was quite tasty. not the best tasting food but edible and even a little tasty. never was offered a refill on our coffee until we requested it, it was busy? then came the kicker! the guests next to us and even another table, two tables away who were sat and ordered after us got the famous potatoes with their orders that we were told they were out of. ok, bad day at work and pretty busy, so i will be back and judge it another day.

just one bite and you know you are in the right place. penny ann’s serves fresh, homemade dishes in a cozy and charming cafe. selections for our breakfast visit included their famous “heavenly hot cakes”, “the big breakfast” and the daily selection of stuffed french toast. ours was stuffed with a caramel and pecan mixture; oh my! - see more at: http://www.coupons4utah.com/penny-anns-cafe-restaurant-review/#sthash.itoataey.dpuf

peanut butter pie addiction. i took my husband to penny ann's for breakfast for his bday. they make their own corned beef hash, so we had to check it out. penny and her husband were very kind and attentive. we had to wait for a stable and they kept us abreast of the status of a table.

i ordered the "pot of gold" which is a cafe "garbage plate". bacon, ham, mushrooms, sausage, cheese, fried potatoes, two eggs all covered in sausage gravy. really tasty and filling. i could only eat a quarter of it as i had to eat every pillowy bite of the accompanying pancakes. so delicious and real butter! no margarine here.

i will be trying the biscuits and gravy next time and for $3.99 they are a deal. a fellow patron remarked that you cannot get biscuits and gravy anywhere in utah (except my kitchen) until now. i completely agree. such an easy dish that everyone screws up royally. this place does it right from what i hear. i can't wait to confirm.

the corned beef hash did t dissapointed. it's a ground version with plenty of flavor. ask for rye bread on the side. delicious!

we ordered a slice of pb pie and a slice of apple sour cream pie. the pb pie was sensational. a must try...then crave. the apple sourcream was a bit dense for my taste and a bit too sweet, but was the real deal for sure. handmade. i can't wait to try their other offerings

my favorite diner. best pancake i have ever tasted. every dish i have ever tried here is wonderful. the proprietors are seasoned pros at the business and their family members who work there and all other employees are friendly and gracious.

it may be a diner, but you must do your dining at breakfast or lunch; closed for dinner.

penny ann’s cafe is a cute diner on 1800 south and main street. it’s not the trendy restaurant labeling itself as a diner in decor, it’s an actual diner with big maroon booths and tiny wooden tables. the restaurant is completely family-owned, as penny herself explained, and most of the staff is a sibling, parent or cousin.

home of the heavenly hotcakes!!

what a delicious spot for breakfast or brunch. the chili verde plate is to die for and a definite must. the biscuits and gravy are the best i've ever had and the benedict's are always a win.

a short trip from downtown salt lake, this small cafe was worth the trip for a delicious breakfast. biscuits, corned beef hash were well above average, and the egg dishes good, quick, and reasonably priced.

everything about this place was great except for one small detail. first the good: the atmosphere was gorgeous and the food (except for the pancakes) was delicious. great place for a nice relaxing weekend breakfast. i enjoyed the pancakes more at original pancake house but everything else was great

we were downtown in slc and needed to kill some time. a search for someplace to eat breakfast led us here. the café is at the ground floor of a rather mundane looking multi story apartment building. upon opening the door, we were hit with a whoosh of delightful breakfast diner aroma. i briefly considered staying inside for the pleasant smell and diner atmosphere, but we had somewhere to be later, and the place was packed. if we wanted seating anytime soon, we would have to sit on the patio outside. slightly cool temperatures meant the patio was almost empty.

the service was friendly and prompt. the food was delicious! my son ordered a sausage breakfast sandwich. ordinarily, breakfast sausage is not my favorite substance (using that term on purpose). this breakfast sausage, on the other hand, was remarkably good. i had two eggs, poached to perfection, and a heavenly hot cake that completely lives up to its name. i am looking forward to a future visit, and recommend you try it.

yes, famous hot cakes. get them and you won't be disappointed. this small diner is a hole in the wall place you want to go to. seating is limited so you will have to wait if you go during a busy time. worth the wait for affordable breakfast.
