ox bar de tapas

bad food, bad service, bad beer, good wine.. tapas this is not. four of us ordered 12 plates and were served the bill 45 minutes later. servers and kitchen staff crammed the food as fast as they could. no explanation or description unless we asked. bread was dry, everything oversalted, and one of the dishes had ketchup and nacho cheese!!! for a $250 meal, we were left hungry and dejected by it all. the servers rarely even knew what was being served, how to recommend a wine, or that their beer list was as bad as the stampede grounds.

love this place!. my partner and i went to ox & angela for valentines day and it was amazing! food is excellent, the atmosphere is lovely, and the staff is exceptional! a must try.

favourite restaurant. my husband and i love this restaurant. first off, i think you just have to say to yourself that you're going to spend a little bit more money than usual to feel full - but it's so worth it because you get to try so many amazing things to eat. we have tried just about everything on the tapas menu (well it changes, but we've done a pretty good job) and we've not had a miss. some things are better than others but we've always enjoyed anything we've tried. i was skeptical about coming here because i'm vegetarian and i envisioned a lot of meat, but they do a good job of having a variety of dishes for vegetarians as well. we've always had friendly service and especially at first relied on servers to get a sense of how much food to order. it's a great space and overall fits my criteria of being an 'experience evening' that i'll pay for. i love the brunch but i was disappointed to see they took the pancakes off the set menu.

the restaurant is divided into 2 sections, the ox (the bar) and the angela (restaurant). the bar is dimly lit and has a laid back atmosphere. the restaurant is brighter and lively with mirrors all over wall.

awesome tapas after a mani/pedi. a friend and i went here for some drinks and tapas after a relaxing mani/pedi on 17th. the weather was perfect so we sat out on the patio - it was around 4:30 pm on a monday. other than the traffic, it was perfect. our drinks were great - we got the ox and the angela. my friends ox was strong and my angela was delish - could totally taste they lychee. we had pan con tomate with manchego cheese - 4 unexpectedly large pieces of bread, so we had to share... and the tuna and the lamb sausage. both proteins were great. the tuna had a peppery, nutty flavour - different than any other tuna i've had. the lamb was zippy - nice and spice with a good accompaniment of dried apricots. i've seen other reviews saying it's pricey for dinner, but as a nice afternoon snack with a fancy drink we each paid $37 including tip and were very happy. i'd like to go back and try the brunch menu.

food was yummy. love the tapas style. a friendlier server who didn't scowl during every interaction with our group would have made the experience more enjoyable. there are other tapas restaurant with better service out there.

located at the heart of calgary’s 17th ave downtown district, ox and angela is serving up spanish style tapas with a canadian twist. with an energetic and warm environment, it’s a lovely spot to stop in for a snack and a drink after work, or a great venue for an evening of fun with a group of friends.

will return again and again. my boyfriend and i came here for dinner at 9pm on a friday night and it was a good thing we made a reservation because there were only a couple empty tables and more people trying their luck as walk-in diners. the atmosphere is great, the décor is lovely, but during the time we came it was so loud that we had to lean over the table and strain our voices to have a conversation. there is really not much that can be done about this and you get used to it after a while (and some drinks) but it's good to keep in mind in case you are looking for a quiet romantic dinner.

i have been here many times before with friends but this was the first time i brought my boyfriend and by this time the menu changed a little. the menu is tapas style so most dishes are smaller than a regular dinner entrée, that being said we ordered 6 dishes to share. they used to have a warm kale salad with chickpeas that i loved so i decided to try their new kale salad which was raw, thinly sliced kale with egg and an anchovy dressing. of the 6 dishes this is the only one we didn't like and it was simply because didn't like the anchovie flavour, but 5/6 dishes is pretty good imo. i loved the toasted sourdough and fresh kale salsa verde, which also paired very nicely with the chicken and pork meatballs in tomato sauce. i always order the asparagus with truffle aioli, manchego cheese, a fried egg and orange. the asparagus are always cooked perfectly! i also almost always order the mushrooms on toast dish with a soft poached egg, truffle oil and arugula. at times i feel there is some inconsistency with the seasoning of this dish although this would not stop me from ordering it again next time because i love all the components so much. the churros for dessert with chocolate dipping sauce are the best i have ever had, i couldn't even find better when i went to mexico!

the service is great here, the servers are friendly and helpful and the server assistants that run food and come around and clear tables are just as pleasant.

all in all we had 6 dishes, and although we didn't eat much of the kale salad, we could only fit less than half of dessert in our bellies and we left feeling incredibly full. i always recommend ox and angela as a great place to go for drinks and bites!

come full with a full wallet. was there earlier this week, first off almost impossible to have a conversation with my fellow dinner guests. it is so noisy. the paella couldn't of had more than a cup of cooked rice and half a cup of chicken for 35.00. prices really high for two meatballs, roasted cauliflower. when the trifle came we laughed at the size of the dessert. won't be back. not that they will care

fantastic dining experience!. from the delicious food & wine to excellent service... how could you go wrong?

won't be back. i took my parents here for dinner one night, the service was amazing but the food unfortunately wasn't. the chicken was still raw and not cooked, and the paella was burnt, plus it was expensive and wasn't a perfect meal. i don't mind paying that much for food but only if the quality and taste is right. this was money wasted and i won't be recommending it.

won't be back. the service was great and the atmosphere was high energy (a little too much.. lots of very loud tipsy groups). the food was so excessively salty!! i managed a couple bites of everything ordered and that was it. no lovely fresh tasting herbs.. no flavor really.. just salt. it was also unbearably cold in the restaurant. the churros were also quite disappointing..couldn't even finish them. again.. the service was excellent! but food was really disappointing.

saturday night out.. the hostess at the door was very accommodating and fit us in on a sat. night.

i'm super choosy about my tapas dining experiences and this one left me eyeing up a pizza by the slice across the street once the bill was paid. besides their patatas bravas, which dressed up a potato quite nicely, i felt underwhelmed w the lack of flavour a tapas restaurant typically prides itself in.

i think i will stick with taste for my tapas fixes in yyc.
