nothing to write home about. orange izakaya is a small restaurant in the cathedral area that specializes in japanese, korean, and fusion cuisine. it's restaurants like these that make it difficult to place in a category, because even though the food is good, it doesn't quite make it to the standard of 'great' neither. with the exception of one dish, nothing is terrible and the food seems to be free of msg.
regarding the japanese food, the taste is comparable to that of michi's high quality, but with a less spectacular presentation. the rolls are substantial and often drizzled with tasteful sauces. also, this is one of the few places in regina to find decent korean food. in both cases, i found the servings to be too small, and more often than not, my utensils would be wandering the table, poaching food off the plates of fellow diners.
during their sunday brunch, we got a better idea of the kitchen's capabilities, as themenufeatured mostly fusion cuisine. both the spinach feta pie and the sweet potato biscuit 'benny' tasted wonderful, but the same cannot be expressed for the dismal toasted shrimp 'sammie.' the latter lacked any hint of shrimp and looked/tasted exactly like a hot dog bun with tomato slices, lettuce, and dill sauce in between. also, most of the yam chips were overcooked. once again we had to order more, because one dish wasn't enough to fill an individual stomach.
overall, it is difficult to rate a restaurant like orange, because although the food is good, it does not give me the urge to instantly return, nor am i deterred from ever going again. the price is slightly higher, but not ridiculously overpriced.
this is the sort of restaurant where if you got a gift certificate, you'd have no reason to be offended at the person who gave it. but no reason to get excited either.
