the food was quite average. theombuchicken was ok but not impressive. the lechon kare kare and the veggie pizza are also ok, but not impressive. i had a lot of expectations before coming to this restaurant of it 4.3 rating, but i was quite disappointed. the staff members are generally not very attentive, and the place is relatively small.

terrible experience
we went during mother's day and we feltombukusina accommodated more customers than they could handle. they poorly prepared for the event and probably did not anticipate the huge influx of diners. overall, we had a terrible experience.

ambiance
the place looked lovely but they cannot seat us within the restaurant premises even if i reserved in advance. instead, they seated us in a bland function room in the hotel's second floor. so much for ambiance.

but hey, who cares? as long as food is great i can tolerate it. unfortunately, things just got way worse from there.

food
our appetizer arrived 45 minutes after ordering:
1. crunchy garlic crablets - we liked this but i guess we were just too hungry from following up and waiting. it was half past noon at this point.

main dishes arrived one after the other in ten minute intervals:
2. grilled squid - burnt, rubbery, and not warm. skip this unless you like chewing car tires.
3. thrice-cooked crispy pata - dry and average. for php720, this was too overpriced for being an unremarkable dish. skip it, you won't miss anything.
4. seafood mix laing - disastrous. whatever was in this, it was served cold. we barely ate this since it tasted nothing like laing. stay away from this dish.

service
they were too overwhelmed and underprepared. although, i would like to commend the manager in charge (geri) who kept her composure despite this hot mess.

after our meal, we went to the burger joint across the street. it was a delight after our horrific experience inombukusina.

ombu is located at the ground floor of sequoia hotel along mother ignacia avenue in quezon city. it’s a “casual fine dining” restaurant with cozy interiors and soft lighting to match.

although “ombu” may seem japanese, it’s actually the name of a tree as a nod of sequoia hotel.ombuserves “modern filipino” fare – half of the restaurant’s menu is a take on filipino classics, and the other half is filipino comfort food we may have grown up with.

we started off our dinner with house blend ice tea and shrimp lumpia. the ice tea was refreshing and fruity, while the shrimp lumpia was succulent and light. although the shrimp lumpia was appetizing, the side of fresh tomato and mango salsa needed tweaking. the pieces of fruit and vegetable were cut too big. so much so that the flavours tasted disconnected, and seemed to be thrown on the plate as if an after thought.

soon after we had our appetizers, our mains came. one of the dishes that impressed the people at our table was the crispy tadyang. the big chunks of fried beef were a hit because they were tender and flavourful. the tart dipping sauce that came with it further enhanced the sweet-savoury taste of the beef.

another dish that everyone seemed to enjoy was the crispy glazed chicken - a batter-fried chicken glazed with sweet garlic sauce that the restaurant proudly calls its “best seller”. most people liked the dish, but i personally thought the flavour was singular. the glaze on the chicken was nothing but sweet.

gising-gising is a ground pork and green bean dish cooked in coconut milk and shrimp paste (bagoong) to enhance the flavor. its name literally means “wake-up, wake-up” because it is supposed to beextra spicy. ombu’s version of gising-gising was not spicy at all. although the dish was rich and complex because of the coconut milk, it lacked the extra spice-kick that makes gising-gising familiar and comforting.

ombu served us two dishes that night that were not yet on the menu: the litson sinigang and litson kare-kare. these dishes are still in their development phase as of writing.

both the litson sinigang and litson kare-kare were my least favourites.

my first taste of the kare-kare actually made me think that it was prepared with pre-mixed powder. the unsavoury broth/sauce fundamentally lacked the nutty flavour that all kare-kare dishes should have. some people from the group also mentioned that the pork litson didn’t work with the dish, as most still would’ve preferred beef in it.

the sinigang was flat and tasteless. although the litson meat was tender and well seasoned, the lackluster broth was just indefensible.

dessert was delicious, and i’m glad to have ended dinner on a high note. the frozen brazo was great to say the least. it had lovely layers of ice cream, yema, and meringue that cleansed the palate quite well.

having some things to improve on doesn’t meanombuisn’t worth visiting. if what you’re looking for is good food, cozy ambiance, and a little privacy, this restaurant might be worth checking out.

just curious, in ombu’s website, it says thatombucloses at 10:30pm, while here in zomato it says 11pm.
but when we arrived inombu(may 16) at 9:20pm, the staff were already cleaning and clearing the place, we asked if they are still open but we were informed that it’s closed already.
just a small detail, but it will help your customers in the future if you will input the correct closing time. thanks!

an underrated restaurant in qc. too sad thatombuhas only 2 branches.

we ordered crispy pata, bulalo soup and frozen brazo. the crispy pata's skin is crunchy and chicharon-like while its meat fell off the the bones. same through with the bulalo. meat was so tender and flavorful.

service is excellent. aside from the food, the excellent service is what keeps us coming back to the place.

ombu kusina was a great experience!
☑️ friendly and attentive staff, who all went the extra smile, and of course
☑️ fantastic food

we got the:
🥘ombuchicken: so crispy and flavorful (my mom loved it)
🥘 bagnet dinuguan: extra crispy bagnet which isn’t overpowered by the dinuguan!
🥘 hungarian & eggs: the perfect breakfast platter.
🥘 sisig pizza: the star of the show. strong and distinct flavors. perfect with the garlic sauce given!
🥘 tres leches halo-halo: not super into halo-halo, but this one is an exception. razon’s has been dethroned!

all were to die for.
will be back for more soon. 😋

we tried this restaurant located at the ground floor of sequoia hotel at mother ignacio corner timog avenue in quezon city. upon entering the place, you'll feel the homey atmosphere thru its chic interior and the warm greetings of their staffs.

ombu kusina offers wide range of delicious filipino dishes, mostly fusion of flavors to surprise your taste buds. what we ordered were mix of shrimp, crab meat, onion and lemongrass wrapped in taro leaves and slightly cooked in light coconut milk (seafood mix laing), savoury spring chicken with varous spices, cooked sous vide and served flaming (flaming chicken), chopped pork mixed with onions and chilies (sizzling pork sisig), and lightly flavored fried rice topped with crispy anchovies (dilis rice). we also compliment our dishes with refreshing calamansi and buco juice with cutesy baby umbrella accent.

overall, our dining experience were superb asombugave what we were expecting; unique menu, sumptuos meals, fine dining, mod atmosphere, and prompt service.

you can also enjoy 1+1 on food every time you dine in atombukusina thru your zomato gold. they are open from 6:30am to 10:30pm, all days of the week.

had such a pleasant time here!

first thing i noticed was how friendly the staff were, we received a greeting from each of the staff members present in the room and there were like 7 of them, some even across the room!

the food was also served in time and more importantly, it was quite excellent! we ordered the hungarian sausage and theombuchicken and both were delicious. my i think that my favorite from that visit was their hot chocolate, simple but great.

definitely 13/10 would recommend!

we had a great dinner atombukusina last night. parking was a bit difficult due to an event at the hotel but they do offer valet parking so make sure to ask for that if the parking is full. shout out to ms. lianne, ms. jessy and sir jm for providing excellent service. my favorites were the sisig pizza, binagoongang talong and flamed chicken. my friends also loved the 3-cheese pizza and gising-gising.

we had a great time at our visit toombukusina. the place was almost empty and we were served quickly. we ordered beef kare-kare, gising-gising, flaming chicken, and sisig pizza. the kare-kare looked so nice that we started eating as soon as it was served— we didn’t even get to take a picture. the kare-kare was my favorite but we literally had to look for the beef because there wasn’t much. the gising-gising was also really good that it made me eat vegetables, it was a hit with my dad. the creamy tres leches halo-halo was a great ending to the sumptuous meal. will be sure to visit again to try the other things on the menu!

i find it so fascinating how our own filipino cuisine evolved throughout the years. we've seen and tasted several new and innovative interpretation on classic dishes. and though our grandparents' recipes have a special place in our hearts (and tummies), the modern take on adobo, lechon and so on deserve applause. and speaking of modern filipino restaurants, one of my new favorites isombukusina.

my experience was great when my fiancé and i dined here for the first time. the staff were accommodating, i loved the ambiance and i enjoyed their sisig pizza! so for my birthday, i suggested that my family and i celebrate it here. we ordered a number of filipino favorites. i especially loved the tender and flavorful crunchy tadyang. we were overall satisfied with the food served. will be recommendingombukusina!
