okay, attracted to a 4.9 rating and, afterwards, find myself wondering how/why?

thought i would try 2 different items - one was theirphobrisket (p1) and the other was the garlic ribeye steak sandwich (s8).

thephowas okay - but, there was less than 3 slices, very thin (about 1x 2" each).  really, is beef than expensive?  then, again, what can you expect for $6??   overall, this was just averagepho- nothing that special.   the sandwich was not that great, either.  very stale bread which crumbled as i tried to take a bite.   actually, the best part was the plum sauce.

service was okay, nothing spectacular as you order up front, get a number, sit down and wait.  ambiance was also okay, but nothing great.

overall, a 3.0 is about the best i can offer and, knowing there are so many other (4+) places to try in slc, i will not be coming back.   sorry, really wanted to be surprised with a 4.9, but in my opinion, it is just average.  oh mai?  more like, "oh no!"

i absolutely lovephoand this place has excellent pho! the price is super good and the food delicious. be wary that this place is super popular so it is always busy. if you want to pick up something from this resturant call your order in. it's so popular that parking is almost impossible! the patio is a great place to eat and has a wonderful atmosphere.

two of my favorites in one place - and cheap!. the bestphoi have had in utah, so far, is thephotai (ribeye steak) at oh mai. quick, cheap and delicious. to top it off, my favorite sandwich in the valley is the yellow curry chicken at the same place. wonderful flavors, great bread...and what a bargain! the restaurant is small, and typically full every day at lunch (especially on fridays) so hit it early or late and you'll be sure to be able to get a seat.

great pho. had an excellentphobase with brisket. base was very well made. had plenty of noodles, onions, pepper slices and sprouts to top off a great meal. got a side of spring rolls that were very fresh and nice sauce to finish them. would love to visit again but in town for business.

amazing vietnamese food!. if you want an amazing vietnamese sandwich or the bestphonoodle soup, there is only one place in south salt lake city and holladay, and it is oh mai! oh mai, was recently featured on diners, drive-ins, and dives (may 2014), highlighting their rib eye sandwich and brisket pho. my favorites are to start with the fresh spring rolls with hoison peanut sauce and then the brisket sandwich. everything is made to order, the vegetables so fresh and everything full of flavor. so many more things to try. just wish i wasn’t flying cross-country right now or i would head to oh mai!

amazing food at a great price!. oh my goodness. i'll keep this short and sweet. this place was wonderful.
great service, quick delivery, and amazing food. i had the yellow curry sandwich and my husband had the brisket and steakphoand we both had the veggie rolls. all of it was wonderful! very well priced for a very filling and delicious meal. we will be going there again and again and again.
oh and the jalapenos in the sandwich are pretty big and long and spicy so... if you like it on the mild side, ask for no jalapeno.

i've been to both locations of oh mai numerous times and have ordered the cold cut bahn mi, the pho, the lotus root salad, the bun, the honey glazed pork and rice dish, the mai rolls, and even the black bean drink. i said i like this place but that doesn't mean i like everything here. my favorite item thus far is the cold cut bahn mi. next favorite item is the lotus root salad and the black bean drink. if you are looking for authenticphothen surely this is not the place. but if you like americanized dishes then enjoy. the honey glazed pork was on the salty side. when it comes to the bun, let just say there are tastier ones elsewhere in the valley. you may be wondering why such a negative review on a place that i enjoy going to? well, like i said before i love some of their dishes but not all. just because your vietnamese food is made by a vietnamese person doesn't necessary make your food automatically authentic (this theory holds true to any other restaurant as well, whether thai, chinese, or mexican).

oh my, oh mai.. in my humble opinion, bestphoin slc. i ordered the rib eye / brisket pho, p5 on the menu. the broth was incredible and had a great depth of flavor. the meat was tender, and brisket nice and wet. i couldn't help but order a rib eye sandwich to go for later, but ended up eating half of it on the drive home as it smelled amazing. it tasted even better. the bread is absolutely amazing. similar bread to real philly breed. definitely one of the best spots for lunch in slc if you are intophoor viet sandwiches.

at oh mai i experienced my first bánh mì sandwich and loved every bite! the crunchy pickled vegetables perfectly complimented the honey roast pork making each bite full of interesting flavors. and any excess bread happily found its place soaking up the excess broth of myphonoodle dish.

pleasantly surprised. i'm not vietnamese, nor am i an expert or anything, but i have some experience with banh mi. i've done prof. salt's banh mi crawl through little saigon in orange county, and have eaten at pretty much every banh mi shop along valley blvd. in la. i really like banh mi, and i have a definite idea of what i think is a good banh mi.

i was really quite surprised by the cold cut banh mi. from some of the earlier comments and a glance at the menu, i'd suspected that this would be a gentrified, gringo-fied and tamed banh mi, but it certainly wasn't.

yeah, the bread is a bit different from some of the other places, but that's not a bad thing. it was very fresh, with a nice tender-crisp crust and chewy interior. i couldn't tell whether it was a rice/wheat flour mix or just a straight wheat-flour bread (my taste buds aren't that good), but it seemed a bit lighter than a wheat baguette. in any case, i liked it; certainly it's much better than the airy-dry-toasted-crispy things they use at the other banh mi shops in town, and closer to the baguettes from the places i like in socal.

the pate was generously applied and had a nice funky flavor. the cold cuts were also generous and had a bit of the squidgey-tough texture of real head cheese. i was worried that they'd cut back on the pate and head cheese to make it more palatable to westerners, but they had plenty of both in full offal glory.

the other toppings were standard but nicely done. the jalapeno seemed to be sliced thinly, which i liked, and the do chua was substantial and more tart than sweet, which worked well.

very good banh mi; easily the best i've had in utah so far. i'll have to try their other offerings.

the only downside was the wait. i was there at lunch hour, so i had to wait for a bunch of huge to-go orders to be filled. on the plus side, that means they'll stay in business. next time, i'll go at off-peak hours.

okay, i went back, and the cold cut combo is still amazing. also tried the honey pork banh mi...also excellent. sending oh mai up to my favorites list now.

update: been at least a dozen times at this point and have a few more thoughts. the pho, bun and rice dishes are tasty. the egg banh mi isn't their best (too oniony), but the "pho" brisket banh mi is usually very good. it's more of a bo kho brisket rather thanphobrisket so it has a sweet/star anise flavor, and comes with pickled onions, and thai basil. they've started adding sriracha sauce to the brisket banh mi, which isn't bad, but also isn't necessary (especially when ordered by chile-phobic dining companions...you'd think that when they specifically order it w/out jalapenos, that should trigger the question of whether to hold the sriracha also...that was very irritating). also, the bread seems to be a little different from what they used at the beginning. oh well, it's still good.
update #2: quality seems to have slipped. i think they may be victims of their own success (a good problem to have). it may be difficult for them to handle the demand with the small kitchen/prep area. the last several times i've been, they've messed up the order each time. the honey pork is often tough, and thephobroth doesn't seem to be as good as it used to be. oh well.
