no such thing as the authentic bánh mì sandwich bread. i think it's time to come out of hiding and write this review. there is no such thing as authentic bread for bánh mì sandwiches. typically, yes, the bread is suppose to be dry and flaky. this is what you usually will see when buying a bánh mì sandwich at a local vietnamese store or restaurant. ohmaidoes use the same bread found at other vietnamese store and restaurants but they do not leave them out to dry to become flaky.

a little about my background, i am vietnamese and i have eaten a lot of bánh mì sandwich in my life from utah to vietnam. having ohmaioffer a softer bread is wonderful, this makes the sandwich so much better. they use quality ingredients and the service is friendly.

i am actually craving for a sandwich right now... yum. this has to be one of the best places to grab a vietnamese bánh mì sandwich in utah.

i used to go to ohmaiall the time until they stopped using resuables for dining in. i am obsessed with all their food! the pho bowls, rice bowls, sandwiches, rainbow salads, egg rolls, you name it! i sometimes feel inclined to order it all at once! love this place. thanks for bringing back reusables. reduce, reuse, recycle

no one in town makes this french-vietnamese fusion sandwich better than oh mai. while ohmaioffer plenty of options fine tuned to the western palate, my favorite remains the “original” cold cuts banh mi (s1). a crusty french baguette is loaded with steamed pork roll, jambon ham, pork head cheese, garlic-butter, pork pate, mayo, cucumber, cilantro, pickled carrots & daikon, salt & pepper, green onion, and jalapeño. i dare you to find a sandwich with more explosive flavor anywhere.

i've been to both locations of ohmainumerous times and have ordered the cold cut bahn mi, the pho, the lotus root salad, the bun, the honey glazed pork and rice dish, themairolls, and even the black bean drink. i said i like this place but that doesn't mean i like everything here. my favorite item thus far is the cold cut bahn mi. next favorite item is the lotus root salad and the black bean drink. if you are looking for authentic pho then surely this is not the place. but if you like americanized dishes then enjoy. the honey glazed pork was on the salty side. when it comes to the bun, let just say there are tastier ones elsewhere in the valley. you may be wondering why such a negative review on a place that i enjoy going to? well, like i said before i love some of their dishes but not all. just because your vietnamese food is made by a vietnamese person doesn't necessary make your food automatically authentic (this theory holds true to any other restaurant as well, whether thai, chinese, or mexican).

wow...i definitely underestimated the vietnamese!. love fresh? love local? well you have just hit the jackpot! ohmaireally makes you want to say oh mai. this secluded little dive is an amazing restaurant. they make fresh sandwiches that beat any sub shop any day. their pho obviously, is amazing. i love this place! even though the restaurant is a little bit of a tight squeeze the food is amazing. i will see you again oh mai!

so tasty!. one of the few things that i have missed since i stopped eating meat 3 years ago is pho. not only does ohmaimake a meat free pho, but it is also vegan and super tasty on top of it! we will return to try other things on the menu!

ok, i know i am a bit late to the party here – but better late than never right? the rumblings, nay shouts, about ohmaiwere heard loud and clear – but for some reason it just took me a minute to get there. you know, no carbohydrates and all. but last weekend, we made it. safe and sound, into the arms of one of the best sandwiches i have ever had. i will be honest, i had never had a banh mi sandwich before. so, perhaps because i didn’t know what i was missing out on, i didn’t run directly over to ohmaiwhen they opened. ohmaiis a super cute small vietnamese sandwich kitchen located right off state street and and 3425 south in what used to be a home. we entered into a busy, full restaurant with a lot of people enjoying themselves. the menu is located at the front counter and you place your order, find a table, and the food will be brought out to you. we ordered the mai’s roll from the grab and go menu to start: shrimp, pork, rice noodles, lettuce, cucumbers, pickled carrots, shredde

everything i've had is delicious!. i work down the street from ohmaiand eat there on a weekly basis. i have had 6 of their sandwiches, which are all wonderful. my favorites are s4 and s6. you get an amazing, fresh, and restaurant quality flavors packed into this foot long baguette for the price of a subway and imo 10 times better. you won't regret it. the staff are all extremely friendly and accomodating. one time i got a sandwich that was too salty and i mentioned it to them and they gave me a free certificate for a sandwich the next time i come in. their spring rolls are also tasty. they mentioned they will be getting in a boba machine in the near future (hopefully with avocado). a definite find!

this ohmaiis exactly like the one in holliday, but when i ordered a sandwich to go from this location, i showed up 20 minutes later and my sandwich had not been made. they then proceeded to make two orders who just sat down, while i stood and waited. when i mentioned i called 20 minutes before, the gentleman said they were "very busy" but there were exactly two other people in the restaurant. when i pointed this out, he got very angry. i will likely go to the holliday location exclusively after this.

at ohmaii experienced my first bánh mì sandwich and loved every bite! the crunchy pickled vegetables perfectly complimented the honey roast pork making each bite full of interesting flavors. and any excess bread happily found its place soaking up the excess broth of my pho noodle dish.

pleasantly surprised. i'm not vietnamese, nor am i an expert or anything, but i have some experience with banh mi. i've done prof. salt's banh mi crawl through little saigon in orange county, and have eaten at pretty much every banh mi shop along valley blvd. in la. i really like banh mi, and i have a definite idea of what i think is a good banh mi.

i was really quite surprised by the cold cut banh mi. from some of the earlier comments and a glance at the menu, i'd suspected that this would be a gentrified, gringo-fied and tamed banh mi, but it certainly wasn't.

yeah, the bread is a bit different from some of the other places, but that's not a bad thing. it was very fresh, with a nice tender-crisp crust and chewy interior. i couldn't tell whether it was a rice/wheat flour mix or just a straight wheat-flour bread (my taste buds aren't that good), but it seemed a bit lighter than a wheat baguette. in any case, i liked it; certainly it's much better than the airy-dry-toasted-crispy things they use at the other banh mi shops in town, and closer to the baguettes from the places i like in socal.

the pate was generously applied and had a nice funky flavor. the cold cuts were also generous and had a bit of the squidgey-tough texture of real head cheese. i was worried that they'd cut back on the pate and head cheese to make it more palatable to westerners, but they had plenty of both in full offal glory.

the other toppings were standard but nicely done. the jalapeno seemed to be sliced thinly, which i liked, and the do chua was substantial and more tart than sweet, which worked well.

very good banh mi; easily the best i've had in utah so far. i'll have to try their other offerings.

the only downside was the wait. i was there at lunch hour, so i had to wait for a bunch of huge to-go orders to be filled. on the plus side, that means they'll stay in business. next time, i'll go at off-peak hours.

okay, i went back, and the cold cut combo is still amazing. also tried the honey pork banh mi...also excellent. sending ohmaiup to my favorites list now.

update: been at least a dozen times at this point and have a few more thoughts. the pho, bun and rice dishes are tasty. the egg banh mi isn't their best (too oniony), but the "pho" brisket banh mi is usually very good. it's more of a bo kho brisket rather than pho brisket so it has a sweet/star anise flavor, and comes with pickled onions, and thai basil. they've started adding sriracha sauce to the brisket banh mi, which isn't bad, but also isn't necessary (especially when ordered by chile-phobic dining companions...you'd think that when they specifically order it w/out jalapenos, that should trigger the question of whether to hold the sriracha also...that was very irritating). also, the bread seems to be a little different from what they used at the beginning. oh well, it's still good.
update #2: quality seems to have slipped. i think they may be victims of their own success (a good problem to have). it may be difficult for them to handle the demand with the small kitchen/prep area. the last several times i've been, they've messed up the order each time. the honey pork is often tough, and the pho broth doesn't seem to be as good as it used to be. oh well.

my bias from the outset: i love bánh mì, and love that i have a variety of places to choose from to get them in slc. the only downside of the status quo is that they all reside on a ten block stretch of each other on redwood road, a substantial drive from my place. so when i saw the sign for ohmaigo up on state street a month ago, was i rooting for them to be great? you bet i was. my dreams have come true. this place stands to save me many trips to the west side. the bánh mì that i had, the s1 cold cuts, was as close to my gold standard, spice kit in san francisco, as i've found in the area. on the protein side of the lineup, pork roll, jambon ham, pork head cheese, and a pork pate. the vegetation side: pickled daikon and carrot, jalapeno, cilantro, and cucumber. surround that with a piece of bread that, while not the traditional so-crispy-that-it-shatters-on- the-first-bite baguette, was nonetheless of the french variety, thoroughly toasted, and nicely dressed with garlic butter
