nair mess

going by the name, it's a mess only. keep expectations realistic & enjoy an economical mallu meal. to evaluate the food i persuaded a keralite friend who rated the food as average, i though rate it it slightly high.

a non veg fare costs around 250 pp, veggies need just to shell out just 100 for a hearty meal. thisplaceis locationally challenged but suits the crowd it attracts. dinner is the time to usually go, to get space for sitting & parking your vehicle as well

attipoli restaurant taste was fabulous mutton gravy and the fish served by you is awesome greatplacefor great lunch if you come quick you will enjoy ur food because lot of rush for thisplaceif u want good food you have to wait. for foodie it is a must try restaurant.

just like every other restaurant i have been going to, i came to know about nair mess from an absolute foodie who raved about thisplaceand how incredible the food here is. that is what made me want to try theplaceout.

so last night, i called my fellow foodie friend and asked him to come out for dinner with me, which he readily obliged.

like everyone else here has mentioned, finding theplaceis pain, after taking way too many wrong routes we finally landed up here, parked the bike and entered what looks like your everyday mess.

they didn't have a menu, rather the waiter verbally let's you know what ever that have. so we decided to go ahead with,

porotta - well not the best i have had, it was quite decent. wasn't flaky and crispy to much my chagrin.

thala curry - this dish has quite an unusual taste, wasn't like any other thala curry i have had before. but we liked it none the less.

chicken cry - my favorite of all the dishes we had here, this was delicious, quite spicy.the taste of pepper was prominent. it was just pure brilliance.

liver fry- this was a typical kerala preparation, loved it, being a fan of liver fry i didn't waste much time and walloped the entire dish.

brain fry-i have never had brain fry in kerala, so it was a pleasant change to try the mallu version of brainfry. this dish was amazeballs.

mutton gravy - we wanted to order their mutton curry, which they had run out off, so they offered us some of the gravy without any meat in it. it was all right, a nicely spiced curry.

verdict- definitely aplaceto go to, you can expect value for the money you spend here. but i found it more inclined towards chettinad food than to mallu food. but it tastes excellent, so no complaints on that front.

food is good butplaceis over crowded. been there during weekday for lunch. waited for around 20 mins finally got corner seat. once started having food people stand will behind and make us get up fast. had mutton gravy meals, mutton briyani and sankara fish. all items tasted good. ambience andplaceneeds to be enhanced.

also to mention side dishes quantity is very small. can visit thisplacefor food taste alone.

i am true believer that certain ratings on zomato is hyped. thisplacelived up to that expectation. as a new newbie to chennai and a lot of recommendation from friends and zomato we landed up for lunch on a busy friday afternoon. firstly, the waiters need a lesson on service. they are quite arrogant and theplaceseems pretty unorganised. we ordered the "legendary" prawn thokku and vanjaram fry. the thokku is served in a 3 inch bowl and the dominant flavour is sweet. the fish fry was sliced really thin and pretty bland. the fish curry was okish. overall nair's mess is a huge mess!

my sundays do not pass without a meal from nair mess ever since i moved to chennai. a must visit for everyone who dies for a nonveg thali. order the vanjiram fry, mutton chukka, fish curry, prawns fry. earlier thisplacewas only operating on the ground floor which did not have air conditioning, you literally would sweat while eating. now, they have opened up on the first floor with a/c which is much more convenient. thank you for existing, nair mess!!!

nair mess is located in the bylanes near chepauk stadium, triplicane. it's very difficult task to find this place, you have to be patient. if you want to have everything on the menu then it's better to visit at afternoon. most of the items aren't available at night. unfortunately biryani was not available at night time. so we ordered meals, prawns fry and mutton fry. i felt meals here was okayish, my favourite dish was mutton fry. ambience of thisplacewas good, nothing fancy.

i heard a lot about thisplacebefore visiting it. i tried fish meals, mutton fry, prawn masala fry and sankara fish fry. meals were average, prawn and mutton dishes tried were good. but the quantity served is very less when you compare it with charges.

the ambiance is average, staff service is good. but overall i am little disappointed with the experience.

the roads google took me through was shady and got me a little apprehensive about the locality. but apparently there was a much shorter route from the main road that i missed.

theplaceis decent. the meals was average. i didn't understand the hype. the vanjaram fry was good as they all said. mutton and other dishes aren't available. fish curry was just ok. i'm a little disappointed.

bestplacefor lunch in chennai. have been visiting thisplacefor many years and it doesn’t disappoint! best part is they cook with coconut oil 👍🏻

too much rate.give a cup of fish kulambu with small piece of fish and cost 62rs.one omelette cost 30rs.i suggest thisplacefor meals only.side dish rate are very over.service is also not good

never knew about the existence of thisplacewhen i used to frequent chepauk as a kid. since my trips to this part of the city has been limited during recent times, i had bookmarked thisplacefor whenever i head that way. one weekday evening finally got a chance to have an early dinner here and i pounced at this opportunity.

ambience
since i was there before/after the rush hours, theplacewas calm and largely empty. they have a simple setup and could be considered well maintained when compared to other mess's in the city.

they are very economically priced.

service is reasonably quick since most of the items are pre-made and stored; while this may mean you are not having pipping hot sides, it also means faster service in crowded times (which i assume is the usual scenario here).

food
my orders were as follows:
1 each of parota, dosa and idiyappam: the dosa and the freshly made accompanying chutneys was good, the idiyappam was outstanding and the parota a little less crispy.

chicken chops - very tender and well cooked chicken chunks in a moderately spiced curry.

prawns - again served in a mild flavoured curry, this semi dry dish was quite good.

on a summary note, this one is among the legendary joints of chennai and though i personally like my food a little more spicier, there is nothing much that one could complain about their offering.

super tasy nonveg food. cooked in indian style. very nice and fast service. awesomeplaceto visit. nonveg lovers can find thisplaceas heaven.
