one of the oldest and most famous pit stops for lunch in chennai!
the nair mess serves biriyanis, meals and some reallygoodsides for lunch.

located :
close to the chepauk stadium, make sure to use the maps .

the food :
we tried the meals with mutton and fish kolambu.and as sides the prawns and the mutton curry! the meals i felt was quite average and so was the kolambu. but the prawns curry was off the hook! so tasty and well spiced too. so was the mutton curry! they serve it in small leaf pots so you will definitely have to ask for another serving. we also went for a mutton biriyani. the mutton inside was well cooked but the biriyani felt quite average

food isgoodbut place is over crowded. been there during weekday for lunch. waited for around 20 mins finally got corner seat. once started having food people stand will behind and make us get up fast. had mutton gravy meals, mutton briyani and sankara fish. all items tasted good. ambience and place needs to be enhanced.

also to mention side dishes quantity is very small. can visit this place for food taste alone.

the roads google took me through was shady and got me a little apprehensive about the locality. but apparently there was a much shorter route from the main road that i missed.

the place is decent. the meals was average. i didn't understand the hype. the vanjaram fry wasgoodas they all said. mutton and other dishes aren't available. fish curry was just ok. i'm a little disappointed.

crowded restaurant always gives you agoodfeeling you are in the right spot. if you want a biryani that is different than what you get in all the famous biryani shops, this is your place. it tastes great. vanjaram fish fry was big, crispy on the out and soft inside with the right spices.

a mess which serves average kerala cuisine.

since it was included in legendary outlets collection in zomato, i was eagerly waiting to try food here. when i finally tried, it didn't live up to my expectations.

since it was famous in chennai, i thought this place would serve tamilnadu/chettinadu style of food. but, to my surprise it was kerala cuisine. this was the first disappointment. zomato could have specified it so that we had reasonable expectations.

i ordered non-veg meals (one with meen kozhambu and the other with mutton kozhambu), fish fry, mutton sukka and omlette. non-veg meals was decent. fish fry wasgoodbut the quantity was less. mutton sukka was not thatgoodand the quantity was very very less. omlette was the way it has to be. i felt that the food here is highly over-rated.

ambience is decent, ignoring the narrow road in which this restaurant is located. prices are a bit expensive considering the locality and quantity of food they serve.

service was very good. i could see many old people working as servers. they were very patiently attending the crowd.

i would recommend this place to people who wants to try kerala cuisine when they are around marina beach. there's nothing extra-ordinary here. have in mind that kerala cuisine is served here, else you would be dissatisfied.

after all the hype given by many people me and my friend after finishing our job near triplicane decided to visit nair mess belive me guys seriously it's not at all worth the hype . the story started as it is :

i ordered 1 veg meals and my friend ordered 1 non veg meals first the waiter came and served some rice, carrot porriyal, pickle and kootu then he served sambhar for me and it tasted pathetic even our house sambar would be much better 😝 then i asked the waiter can i get some applam/pappdam he said sorry but we serve only this then i ordered omlet ( prepared in coconut oil ) which wasgood. come to my friend's banana leaf he was also served the same except for sambar he was served meen kuzhambu since he opted for non veg meals . he ordered prawn thooku as side dish which you clearly see on the photo and it's quantity for which we were charged rs .80/- which is not worth at all . after finishing sambar he served me some rice and poured some rasam which also okay not that great and served the same kootu and poriyal finishing that i folded my banana leaf he asked me whether i want moor/curd for rice and i told him no i am done with this. after eating the waiter came up with a bill of rs 444 ( 1 veg meals , 1 non veg meals 3 omlet and one prawn curry/thokku) they provide free small water bottle for which they didn't charge us . thnak god 🙏 even in a veg hotel the unlimited meals would some options like applam karakuzhambhu sweet etc . if you ever feel like visiting here my suggestion is just don't atleast there should be some quality and quantity in the price they charge here both doesn't make sense . only omlet was good

nair's mess - its one of the iconic non veg outlet in namma chennai, which is in action since 1961.

on a sunny noon during a weekend, stepped into nair's mess for lunch during their wee hours of closing. it's located quite opposite to cheapauk stadium in a small lane which leads to this hidden gem. was relieved as it was less crowded and got table easily. there is no specific menu cards and their itineraries being quite generic non veg menu.
went for meals along with fish fry, chicken fry and mutton curry. its always ecstatic to have meals in thalai vazhai leaf( banana leaf). hot rice served on the banana leaf gives its exuberant effervescence to the food. soon aimed to the table was kootu and poriyal, followed by mutton curry and fish curry.

as we were quite late, kolambu meen(curry fish) was not available. started my meals with fish curry and man it was bloody awesomatic. though the curry was quite watery, the rich flavor of the fish and the perfect masala tinge to the curry just elevated the taste to the next level. now the vanjiram slice(seer fish) was the pick of the lot. it was not deep fried, rather it was shallow fried in tawa. not to mention, it was less spicy and am not sure if it would go well with ppl who expect their fish fry to be spicier. but sure did it satiate me, the succulent meat with a scoop of the fish kolambu rice was pure bliss. the mutton curry was just fine and the curry was quite thicker. it had a mutton piece and it didn't wentgoodwith rice. may be with idiyappam or appam it would have been a best combo.chicken fry, was a letdown. the tanginess was missing, less spicier with scantily populated chicken pieces. rasam too was just average, nothing much to barge.

the service was quite impeccable here, thanks to the effusive waiters. i would recommend to go with their fish curry meals and fish fry, indeed it’s their usp. rest of the menu was just average. overall bill came for 440 for a meals, mutton curry, fish fry and chicken fry and its slightly overpriced. but for the quality they render its acceptable and could be tried once.

this was my second visit after 8 years and it has changed a lot.
renovated and looksgoodbut there is no information/menu for first timers.
servers are well mannered and orally give you the menu but in the chaos of popularity they bring you every other dish to try even if u don't order it incase your senses want them after you look at them.

the menu is simple they have standard meals which are mash up of #kerala or #chettinadu cuisine. that's inr 95

you can order chicken/mutton/fish curry in a small bowl and can request them to give extra too. that's around inr 95

or thick masala prawn too which we didn't try

you can add fish fry for 200 and an omelette .

you got chicken and mutton biriyani.

tasty food and awesome new decor but the quantity of sides are so less in other words it's expensive for the serving.
this old classic is situated in a not sogoodnarrow road. no parking nearby.

my suggestion is to increase quantity/servings.

put a menu board even if it's limited menu and make your servers to inform the same and accommodate the guests
