monty's blue plate diner

iloveit. living in la crosse where vegan offerings are slim to none, it is great to go to a place who recognizes the joy and need for vegan food. i am not a regular at monty's but when i have gone i have been really happy with the choices and quality of food. a retro place with a variety of offerings for vegans and vegetarians.

it is a busy place and every time i have gone it is packed. there is seating outside when the weather is nice. it is family friendly, average prices and big portions of food.

it is in an interesting neighborhood and there is an effort to make sure you are getting what you want and asked for there.

i always take my family here when they come in from out of town. we are all vegetarian, with various degrees of lactose tolerance. i always make a point to get the vegetarian soup of the day, and i have never been disappointed. ilovea restaurant that will reliably hit me with a good vegetarian soup. more often than not, i also get the heathen vegan sandwich, but i always add cheese because 1) i'm not vegan and 2) ilovejoy.i've taken g/f and g/s friends to monty's and heard no reports of upset tumms, or otherwise. so, i'd give montys a 5/5 for catering to special diets well.  the pies at monty's are just awesome too. for pi day this year, i got my boyfriend and i a mississippi mud pie to share, and ultimately caught him eating it out of the fridge at midnight with his hands.all in all, there's a reason monty's has been around as long as it has, and its the consistently fun atmosphere and good food.

always enjoy the food here at monty's. busy place much of the time, but i always find the meal is well worth the wait.lovethe historic deco gas station building, historic photos on the wall, and the vintage decor. friendly servers always.
breakfasts here are my favorite, and so is the blue plate blue cheese burger, yum.

great experience!. i am a vegetarian and my boyfriend is, well, most certainly not. this is one of the few places around madison that we both love. i personallylovethe "meatless loaf of the gods", their homemade vegetarian meatloaf. wait staff is always on top of things and very friendly. would also recommend their malts!

it can be a wait to get a table, but that's just because so many peoplelovethis place. they've got a great sense of humor, old diner atmosphere, and they heap a load of food on your plate. they really have something for everyone. they only negative is trying to figure out which dish you'll have to try next time.

i agree with some other mixed reviews. some folksloveit, and it has some charm, but i've never had an outstanding experience here.

why do i keep going back?. i've been at least half a dozen times and have not once had a good meal. i go back against my preferences "one more time" for friends wholovethe place and are convinced that i've just had bad luck, but it is never better. every meal i've been served has been cold. i've been for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and it doesn't seem to matter. the eggs are just as cold as the burgers. on my last visit, i and my friend ordered the same omelet and while his appeared to be warm, mine was so cold the cheese barely softened from its shreds.

i have no idea why peoplelovethis restaurant so much. the food is barely mediocre and the menu selection is not very inspirational.
