very anticipated then let down at the end by extremely rude waiter whom made us feel like we weren't good enough even though we purchased $100+ wine bottles... have never been treated so poorly in all my life at a restuarant! went for our anneversary started off great, good atmosphere, great french food, excellentbunique wine, then during taking our desert menu the tall bald goofy waiter stops as obviously more important people turn up turns his back to us and escourts these people to there table, we were half way through giving our preference of desert then comes back and says 'where were we at' we start again then he runs off and grabs the othe people the menus and come back again and we had to remind him to pour the expensive wine! we were so embarressed that i took personal offence as it was an insult to me ego i swore at the guy, and i dont ussually complain! too bad for them i like to spend lots on food and wine and won't be going back to give th my or my friends business.. thousands out the door for them! disgusted

french bistro. most of the menu's tried and tested french fare, but a few entries are innovations that don't quite hit the mark (like the escargots in puff pastry). loved the trio of appetisers as amuse bouche (roquefort souffle, prawn wrap, and foie gras with brioche today). was about to go for the bouillabaise but ruefully opted for the veal cutlets with cream sauce and caramelised apples at the last second. i was underwhelmed, to say the least. the desserts picked things up, with the creme brulee and mont blanc just right. will try the cheeses next time!

delightful!. from the moment we arrived, the service was attentive but not intrusive, and the impeccably attired staff looked after every aspect of our experience. the courses were served quickly, but we never felt rushed, and the food was superb, simple classic dishes, beautifully executed. september is truffle season, and this flavour was incorporated into the fresh pea soup and the rack of lamb...lovely. great coffee too. it does seem a touch expensive, however every bite was a treat. highly recommended.

impressive. this place was impressive. it's cosy and oh-so-french. the food was high quality and portions were generous (i was expecting tiny amounts of food). the service was professional yet friendly. a great experience all round - and recommended for special occassions.

pompous and overrated. my fiancée and i were extremely excited about dinning at montrachet due to its exceptional reputation and the apparent difficulties associated with making a booking (due to their unusual opening days/times). however, when we actually dined there to say that we were disappointed is an understatement. the staff were pompous and undertrained (especially when it came to pouring wine), to 'bistro' style layout was far from a fine dining experience, the cramped seating arrangement left you feeling like sardines in a can, and to top it off 5 out of the 8 courses for our degustation menu left a lot to be desired. the only saving grace for this restaurant was its sumptuous and silky desserts. we will not be going back to this restaurant when there are alternatives like the buffalo club and otega available.

the food is awesome and authentic, but so is the horrible french attitude of the staff. just like in france, you get the real experience. still, worth it if you can cop it.

interesting bistro french style. great place for bistro dining. don't expect the full fine dine experience as the atmosphere is much more bistro dining. the place is usually packed so book ahead and don't expect to have a hushed whispered conversation.

this quintessentially french bistro captures the parisian atmosphere in its decor and layout then trumps all that by putting the best of the entire country on a plate for your pleasure.

for francophiles. when we are trying to overcome our terrible longing for all the good things from france we head to montrachet.
a traditional style french restaurant, it is wonderful for lunch or dinner and you have to plan well in advance to secure a table.
the menu is delightful and often thierry has a gorgeous, runny french brie on offer to finish off nicely.
lots of french wines on the list as well as some excellent local and international labels.
this restaurant is expensive but a wonderful experience.

rarely puts a foot wrong. montrachet rarely puts a foot wrong with its beautifully prepared dishes and chic surrounds.

there's a few seating options - at the bar for singles, , couples and those keen to discuss wine with the lovely waiters, at the tables for groups and those looking for a more formal experience, and outside for those ... well those who didn't book early enough! don't sit outside - book another day - the traffic and fumes are awful.

i had the gravlax salmon to start which was light and flavoursome with a beautiful olive oil. the other half enjoyed his snails in shells, which were particularly garlicky.

for mains i chose the veal medallions, which were very tender, and the other half went for the classic duck a l'orange - a very well executed dish and highly recommended.

every mouthful is a taste sensation and the friendly chef/owner makes you feel quite special when he comes for a chat over dessert. the staff seem like a group of people who genuinely seem to be enjoying themselves, and who are more than happy to take time out to chat with you.

the only shame is not opening weekends, which means we didn't drink as much of the wine list as we would like.

blink and you'll miss it. montrachet is a modest little restaurant just up the hill from the paddo tavern. it's tucked behind some dark roller blinds on the sidewalk and not particularly well signed. who cares? this exquisitely french establishment was no
