great italian market, 3rd best sandwich. i love the smell of mona lisa's when you first walk in, cured meats, salt cod, bread, aged cheese - all fight for aplaceon your olfactory. there are so many little things going on there that kind of make you think of a new york italian neighborhood. the proscuitto heels that they sell for half price. the little dollar sandwiches while you wait for your real lunch. all the employees are italian (or their mom's were) so the sicilian lilt in the langauage is always in the background. the selection of imported pastas and cookies is one of the best in town.
as fo their sandwiches - the fillings are great, i'm just not partial to their bread. #1 poma's in ob - uses soluntos bread with that hard crusty water loaf texture. #2 bmh in la mesa bakes their own (a little softer semolina base) but has an awesome dressing. #3 mona lisa still a great showing.
