momocho was one of the first places in cleveland that i had put on my list.  i saw it on an episode of diners, drive-ins and dives (apparently… because i just had to google it to figure out where i had seen it…).  it was a place that i hadn’t been to for a couple reasons.  first, it’s on the west side of town and i live and work on the east.  and while it is only 20 minutes away at best, it’s still a bit of a haul.  and second, i didn’t have anyone to go with that would justify making that haul (same reason i haven’t been to lucky’s cafe).  but, thanks to recent developments, i’ve since rectified the second excuse which in turn solved the first.  so having no reason not to make the trek all the way to the west side…which is seriously maybe four more minutes than my commute home anyway…it wastimeto give momocho a try.  it helps that they have a happy hour that ashley really likes… to properly enjoy happy hour, i started by leaving work early…figuring that’s part of the reason it’s cal

good food, uneven service. i've had a few good experiences here and one terrible one. the food is tasty - love the guacamole and the cucumber margaritas. unfortunately, the service was so bad the lasttimei went that i don't think i'll ever be back. when our drinks didn't show up and we asked someone about it the server came back and scolded us for asking. she then ignored us for the entire rest of the evening. she was great to everyone around us but never came to our table. it was outrageous.

momocho used to be one of my favorite places. i've lived in ohio city since 2008 and love to support local businesses. my friend and i sat at the bar, ordered a sampler, and as we were waiting to decide official drinks, the bartender (manager) said to a man using a walker (who just arrived right after us) at the bar "either you can order or you can leave" without giving him 30 seconds. my friend and i followed him out to offer our apologies and offered to give him 10$ to have a drink on us at the next place-he refused the money and said he had money, but didn't even havetimeto order. then when i went back inside the bartender asked what i wanted, i said "i just i need a minute, i am surprised at the interaction between you and that man, it is really sad" and she responded by snatching our drinks and saying "then you aren't welcome here either". at that point, my friend and i were so shocked and horrified, we left to support an inclusive local business. because of this discrimination, and their response to me when i said i needed a minute to understand what just happened, i will never return to momocho. i did typically enjoy their margaritas in the past (not a fan of the food), but unfortunately, i wouldn't come back due to how they treat people.

posted by becky fixel aka week99er when we're traveling we love to try out new places, not just visiting all of the chain restaurants we're use to. so when we were in cleveland recently, and a craving for mexican hit us, we started looking for a place to go. most mexican menus can easily be made to be gluten free, but we found momocho not only had mexican fare but also a gluten free menu.    offering traditional mexican dishes with a more modern flair, momocho's menu will delight you at the playfulness and the flavor combinations. several items on the menu were unknown to us, but our waitress was happy to explain what each item was.  we settled on the beef brisket tacos with the traditional verde salsa. i even opted for the blood orange jalapeno marmalade. i was a delicious combination of comfort food, sweet, savory and spicy.  momocho actually is a slang word for little hellion, and momocho's looking to shake up what you think of traditional mexican cuisine. from a diverse interior of crosses, masks and skulls all inside a nondescript building. the mexican style and flavor is in more than just their scratch made meals.  visit  momocho online  or the nexttimeyou're in cleveland. becky fixel is the main blogger on week99er.com focusing on gluten free recipes, product reviews, diys and more. week99er was started when she reached week 99 of unemployment benefits - life threw a curve ball and you never know where you might end up. read more about week99er and her review team! you can find week99er on facebook , twitter , google , pinterest , and instagram . stay up to date on the latest recipes, reviews and more - subscribe to my daily emails! this post may contain links that are sponsored or provided by an affiliate company. all opinions stated in this post are the authors. products reviewed were received by the author for free. regardless, i only recommend products or services i use personally and believe will be good for my readers. read the full disclosure policy

overall momocho is not bad. however, it is not somewhere you would take the whole family. the food is overrated and very pricey ! you will get more pleasure eating out at an average chain restaurant than momocho! for an "upscale" restaurant, none of the food came out at once. by thetimei was done eating, the rest of my family received their meals. for an "upscale" restaurant that was unacceptable. finally, they charged for extra chips which is very tacky considering we ordered $80.00 in drinks. do not believe the hype about this place. go to cozumel and save your money!

new favorite. i recently went to momocho for the firsttimeand loved it. i ordered the margarita sampler and it was divine. it is weeks later and i can't stop thinking about it. (i ordered fig, guava and blood orange for the sampler.)

the guacamole (goat cheese version) was a very generous portion (2 of us couldn't come close to finishing it) and was wonderful. i wasn't overly impressed with the salsa but that could be because i am a guacamole lover.

we split two smaller plates: empanadas and something (i can't remember the name of it and the site is down) with chorizo. both were very good.

we sat at the bar and the service from the bartenders was very good. i'd say i'm sort of a cheapskate and was a little hesitant once i saw the prices on the menu, but i don't regret spending any of my hard earned money there.

i can't wait to return!

my fiancee wanted to go to momocho for her birthday dinner. after reading all of the glowing reviews and even seeing them on unique eats, we just had to see what all the hype was about. it turned out that we met another couple for drinks before hand and asked them to join us for our meal! this would be our firsttimeeating dinner at momocho. food we started our meal with the guacamole sampler. this gave us a chance to pick three different guacamole. from bottom to top in the picture below we picked the goat cheese with tomato chile and poblano peppers, the jicama with pineapple, chile habanero, and mint, and finally the garlic confit with bleu cheese, and chile verde. the goat cheese really stood out in contrast to the avacado. i enjoyed how each bite packed a punch. the sweet pineapple and jicama blend was my personal favorite because of the way it blended with the heat that came in late, and lingered on until the next bite. the bleu cheese had a lot of potential, but only a few bite

overrated. this restaurant has received rave reviews for its food...however after waiting an hour for our table and another hour for our guacamole appetizer (which never came) we can't comment on the quality of the food. the staff is rude at best and seemed to spend moretimeoutdoors on smoke breaks than indoors serving customers. their menu reads "to respect all of our customers, we ask you to keep your dining experience to a 2 hour maximum"...guess you shouldn't plan on eating.

last saturday the dude and i met up with two of his friends and their ladies for dinner at momocho in ohio city! i hadn't been there in three years so i was super excited to go. apparently we had thetimewrong and everyone else had to wait for a half hour. while there were waiting they ordered the smoke trout guacamole with bacon and chile poblanos along with the blue cheese guacamole with garlic confit and chile verde. i decided to be brave and try the smoked trout. i'm not normally a fan of smoked things, but i enjoyed this guac a lot. of course, due to my dairy allergy i could not try the bleu cheese version. to drink i ordered a pomegranate margarita, on the rocks, with salt. nom, nom, nom so good. it tasted like a margarita with just the right amount of pomegranate flavor. nexttimei go i'll have to try a new flavor. for my entree i had the grilled hanger steak taquito. the steak was great and i asked for a side of the original guac to go with it. the tortillas that came with we

when can i go back? loved it. four of us went on a saturday night, firsttimefor us, usually don't drink, but the margaritas, fruit and classic are too seductive and tart yet sweet to miss, guacalmole sampler, smoked trout, and goat cheese were definite winners, fresh salsa & great chips, nexttimei will go straight to the pecan crusted trout with mustard crema and sofrito green beans, i could go back tomorrow. this is the firsttimei have been excited about a restaurant experience in cleveland, fresh flavors , excellent service, kind people answering the phones , a winner, good luck eric williams with the james beard nomination

mid-week i received an email from miss penny (of restaurant dante fame) stating the obvious: it had been far too long since we had seen each other and we needed to get together now. knowing by now to never question the sage advice that miss penny doles out on a semi-annual basis, a series of back and forth emails were sent between her, myself, and fellow foodie edsel. while we knew that the jumping off point for tonight's festivities would be at the velvet tango room for a few pre-dinner cocktails, it wasn't until miss penny made the wonderful suggestion of dining at momocho mod mex that our path for the entire evening became clear. i called the restaurant to ensure a reservation and was given two options, 6:30 and 8:15 pm. seeing as none of us had any place exciting to be on a friday night, i went ahead and booked the three of us for the latertimeslot. at the appointed hour, the three of us descended upon the vtr and promptly began to enjoy the spoils from another completed work wee

best mexican in oh. we came up from cincinnati to try it, and it lived up to the hype. i was going to get the guac trio sampler, but was warned by the bartender it's huge and a meal in itself, so instead we opted for the guac with fish and bacon, which was incredible. the trout added a nice flaky texture and smoky flavor to the creamy avocado, and the bacon was diced and caramelized to the point where every now and again you would get a sweet chewy bit and just savor it. it actually took a few bites to realize that was the bacon, which is a good thing since i'm normally not a fan. we also had the smoked gouda tamale dumplings, which i referred to as "convert to christianity b/c there must be a god" good. they melted all in your mouth and made you forget about all of your troubles.

the build it yourself style soft tacos did not disappoint either. my wife had the seared tuna with the blood orange-jalapeno marmelada (which is some of the best sauce i have ever had in my life) and i had the slow roasted duck and pomegranate ancho barbacoa. hers was very good, but mine was exquisite. it was actually a little hard to differentiate the duck from the beef given the textures and flavors (both meats were shredded) but after a few minutes and individual tastings, it quickly became apparent. the pomegranate in the barbacoa was just a slight node and really paired well with the duck. it also came with a spicy verde on the side that was much more neon in color than i am used to seeing, but also a great flavor. we left feeling very satisfied (a good thing considering when we first arrived we didn't think we'd get a table for a while and almost went to melt) with both the food and the staff and it can be guaranteed that the nexttimewe are in cleveland we will be going to momocho first.

can't wait to go back!. a group of us went last to momocho saturday night. i've never been there before but other people in my group have been. the place was packed downstairs with hardly room to move. our waiter took thetimeto go over the entire menu with us and suggested the scallops and pork chop. and am i glad he did! i ordered the pork chop and it was incredible it had a lot of flavor and the smoked gouda tamale dumplings were a nice touch. all food was unique and flavorful. i was surprised to find out the same person who sat us was the chef and the owner of the restaurant. the staff worked very well together from our friendly, knowledgeable waiter to the person who brought our food and the busboy who cleared our plates. i used to work in a restaurant and noticed these kinds of things. when our waiter said he looked forward to seeing us again i told him he could count on it! we will definitely be back!
