pricey but worth it. the ambiance was great. the drinks were delicious. the bartenders were perfectly engaging.

the guacamole was absolutely fantastic. i'd go back for that alone. i got the carnitas, he got the...um, beef-something. mine was perfectly tender and seasoned; his was a bit tough.

the items were a bit pricey, but it was worth it for some legitimatelygoodfood.

good food, uneven service. i've had a fewgoodexperiences here and one terrible one. the food is tasty - love the guacamole and the cucumber margaritas. unfortunately, the service was so bad the last time i went that i don't think i'll ever be back. when our drinks didn't show up and we asked someone about it the server came back and scolded us for asking. she then ignored us for the entire rest of the evening. she was great to everyone around us but never came to our table. it was outrageous.

momocho mod mex puts the modern spin on mexican cuisine in the heart of ohio city. chef-owner eric williams, a two-time james beard nominee, operates a restaurant that's fun, festive and flavorful. the menu is chock full of vegetarian dishes, including the ever-popular flavors of guacamole. there is an extensive gluten-free menu. the chef whips up guacamole with traditional ingredients, and offers variations loaded with fresh ingredients that put a spin on the classic dip. current options include goat cheese and roasted poblano guacamole, and a jicama, pineapple, habanero and mint guacamole. the decor is fun. the darkly lit venue is covered in black and white photos of luchadors and unnamed figures in a style akin to the day of the dead, as well as some amazing looking low-rider bicycles over the kitchen and the entrance. servers did agoodjob handling a large party. there were minor issues with pacing and handling explicit instructions from diners when business picked up. service was prettygoodif short of outstanding. the taquitos at momocho are nothing like the ones endlessly spinning under the hot lamp at your local gas station, or buried in the back of your college fridge. fillings included roasted beets, spinach, spicy peanuts and queso fresco, or roasted butternut squash, goat cheese and salted pepitas, both served with a chunky pico de gallo. the ingredients change with the seasons. the bar offers excellent margaritas in a different flavors and formulations with an excellent menu of tequila and mezcal. beers are mostly mexican with a domestic beer made in a latin american pilsner style. posted by deraj1013

posted by becky fixel aka week99er when we're traveling we love to try out new places, not just visiting all of the chain restaurants we're use to. so when we were in cleveland recently, and a craving for mexican hit us, we started looking for a place to go. most mexican menus can easily be made to be gluten free, but we found momocho not only had mexican fare but also a gluten free menu.    offering traditional mexican dishes with a more modern flair, momocho's menu will delight you at the playfulness and the flavor combinations. several items on the menu were unknown to us, but our waitress was happy to explain what each item was.  we settled on the beef brisket tacos with the traditional verde salsa. i even opted for the blood orange jalapeno marmalade. i was a delicious combination of comfort food, sweet, savory and spicy.  momocho actually is a slang word for little hellion, and momocho's looking to shake up what you think of traditional mexican cuisine. from a diverse interior of crosses, masks and skulls all inside a nondescript building. the mexican style and flavor is in more than just their scratch made meals.  visit  momocho online  or the next time you're in cleveland. becky fixel is the main blogger on week99er.com focusing on gluten free recipes, product reviews, diys and more. week99er was started when she reached week 99 of unemployment benefits - life threw a curve ball and you never know where you might end up. read more about week99er and her review team! you can find week99er on facebook , twitter , google , pinterest , and instagram . stay up to date on the latest recipes, reviews and more - subscribe to my daily emails! this post may contain links that are sponsored or provided by an affiliate company. all opinions stated in this post are the authors. products reviewed were received by the author for free. regardless, i only recommend products or services i use personally and believe will begoodfor my readers. read the full disclosure policy

i have to start off my review raving about the guacamole, it just can't wait. after ordering the smoked trout and bacon guacamole, i think i would've given momocho 5 stars if they served me a soft taco from taco bell as my entree..the guac was that impressive!

the smoky flavor of the trout and bacon came through absolutely perfectly without overpowering the other flavors at all- i'm sure even the normal guacamole is incredible; whatever their base ingredient ratio is seems to be spot on for perfect, creamy guacamole with just the right amount of avocado to spiciness.

for my entree i ordered the shrimp taquitos which were verygoodbut honestly completely overshadowed by the guacamole. the shrimp were cooked nearly perfectly and the garlic sauce was good- not great. the portion was also a little smaller than i'd like usually but after loading up on guac and pico de gallo (also very fresh and excellent tasting) it was just right. the service was superb, and i heard the margaritas were excellent as well.

wonderful restaurant experience. they were completely booked as far as reservations went, but we showed up anyway. we were told that it would be 45-60 minutes before we could be seated. we had a table in under 5 minutes despite the place being packed. we were off to a verygoodstart.

our server was great, but the margaritas were even better. i had the spicy mango margarita and it was out of this world. i wish i could have tried all of the other margarita offerings. we started with the guacamole sampler (you pick 3 different types). we tried: 1. jicama, pineapple, habanero, mint, 2. smoked trout, bacon, chile poblano, and 3. pickled corn, crab and chipotle. all 3 were very tasty, but i wouldnt say they were worth the $19+ price tag. we ran out of chips for the guacamole, and were charged $2 for another basket.

as far as entrees, our table ordered: chancho taquitos (with wild boar), braised shortrib tamales and a carnitas (pork) dish. all 3 were above average, excellent dishes. everyone was extremely happy with their meals. i woul dbe happy with any of them, but the carnitas were my favorite. please note that the restaurant menu does not match their online menu. it may be similar, but far from exact.

this is a very special restaurant, unlike any "mexican" restaurant i have ever been to. prices are rather high, but the food, drinks and service were all top notch. if you can make a reservation, thats great. if you unable to, go anyway...

so-so. went to momocho friday night-first off, service was excellent and our waiter andrew was very informative, friendly and excellent all around.

we went on all the hype the restaurant has received and were really excited to finally get a change to try it out. nice atmosphere, busy energy-it was good. we ordered the margarita sample-the cucumber i loved and the black fig was perfect. next we ordered the guac with goat cheese-good but to be honest kinda ho-hum...i could make that at home, nothing quite special about it. for our main dish we ordered the duck confit and machaca make your own taquitos. good, but just missed the mark on being special or out of this world. no spice to either dish and nothing to write home about. i think the either it was an off night or the hype was blown out of proportion. we also got the fried ice cream for dessert-clearly not freshly fried so that was disappointing.goodflavor but again just missed the mark.

we would go here again if someone else suggested it but not one our first picks. stick to fahrenheit or light bistro if you are looking for something better than just ok.

menu made me giddy. my sister-in-law chose this restaurant because she knew i liked adventurous dining experiences. while our husbands sipped worchestire beers, she and spend agood15 minutes marking up our menu trying to order the perfect combination of dishes.

i loved the smoked trout guacamole and the scallops in creamed corn. our wild boar tacos were a little too tough to be enjoyable. the goat cheese and sweet potato empanadas were the guys' favorites. though our server highly recommended the sofrito green beans, i found them to be stringy and kind of bitter. vegetables are my favorite food group, so its unusual for me to not like a veggie dish. perhaps it was an off night for green beans?

the bill was more than i usually spend on a week's worth of groceries, but the overall experience, complete with candlelight and lucha libre decor was a bunch of fun.

fabulous!!!. my husband and i ate at momocho last night after one of his friends told him about it. after reading some reviews i called immediately (around 4:30 pm) and made a reservation for 7 pm. we arrived and were immediately seated. eric our waiter was awesome! so nice and had some really great recommendations. the goat cheese guac was amazing, very light and fresh. unless you have a large group just get one guac, they are huge and you won't want to touch your dinner. i got the mahi mahi taquitos and they were to die for! the fish was prepared perfectly and especiallygoodwith the pineapple salsa. my husband got the pork belly and he loved the smokiness and the amazing flavor but it was pretty fatty (which the waiter warned us about). after only eating about half of our dinners (we got the rest boxed up) we sat for a while and digested then ordered the fried ice cream. i was in heaven!!! it was so delicious with the fresh strawberries on top! our bill came to just under $50 which i was pleasantly surprised about. we will be returning to momocho as soon as we can!

when can i go back? loved it. four of us went on a saturday night, first time for us, usually don't drink, but the margaritas, fruit and classic are too seductive and tart yet sweet to miss, guacalmole sampler, smoked trout, and goat cheese were definite winners, fresh salsa & great chips, next time i will go straight to the pecan crusted trout with mustard crema and sofrito green beans, i could go back tomorrow. this is the first time i have been excited about a restaurant experience in cleveland, fresh flavors , excellent service, kind people answering the phones , a winner, goodluck eric williams with the james beard nomination
