not good for group events.. i have always been a big fan ofmodelmilk, i picked this venue to have a special after wedding dinner with some close friends, we had a group of 14 so we booked the private dining room. they put us on a set menu, after struggling to pick two items the entire party would get to choose from i received a call two days before the event saying the menu had changed and we needed to pick new items. we also had two vegetarians and options were very limited and flexibility was nonexistent. trying to deal with the event coordinator prior to the event was very difficult. if you are a larger group looking for a special organized evening, i would not recommendmodelmilk. spending $170 per person the server seemed quite annoyed the entire night. we had a gentleman with us who suffered from a previous stroke, the waitress seemed quite annoyed with him the entire evening. unfortunately my experience has turned me off from the location and i will not return or recommend.

oustanding. my girlfriend and i visitedmodelmilk for the first time recently. we were there for a special occasion and the crew atmodelmilk definitely helped make it one. the food is amazing. we enjoyed a couple starters and a great recommendation on a bottle of wine.

she had the cheddar crusted steak, i had the lamb and both dishes were outstanding. i also recommend the bag of donuts for desert.

the staff is knowledgeable and very detail oriented. we'll be back, and you should go.

great food. my wife and i dined with another couple atmodelmilk on saturday may 4th and i must say that i was very impressed with the food. we shared 2 appies, the calamari and the prawn rolls which were both fantastic. i had the arctic char with some kind of a wasabi spread and my wife had the pork. both were well prepared and even though i would normally stay away from anything with wasabi, it was great and not to hot. we finished the evening some shared deserts (the fat kid cake, ice cream sandwich & bag of doughnuts) which were all extremely delicious.

trying too hard. for all the buzz aboutmodelmilk, i was expecting more than one "omg this is incredible" moment. i didn't even get one. on our second visit everything was voted "okay" by our family group of 20-somethings and 60-somethings. the place was incredibly noisy and the food did not make up for the difficulty talking and hearing. shrimp rolls were very good. fried green tomato was okay, but a huge portion for a starter. fries with cheese - huge portion, enough for three people - good but not great. burgers were 4 inches high, hard to bite into, chunky mushrooms fell out everytime you picked the burger up. steelhead trout was perfectly cooked, served with some pleasant greens and a very traditional creamy tarragon sauce. boudin noir with gnocchi - weird and tasteless gnocchi, all 4 of them, maybe 6 or 8 chunks of sausage, a light dish as advertised. the mushroom vegetarian dish was okay too. for dessert, the bag of donuts was proclaimed delicious, but there were only 4 little donuts so not really enough to share unless you wanted just a tiny taste of dessert. the rhubard sauce was a nice spring touch. the chocolate cake was over the top - too many things going on, with chunks of chocolate-covered pretzel and some kind of peanut crunch candy in a fairly dry chocolate cake layered with a vaguely cherry-flavoured icing, topped with a flavourless runny milk sorbet.other desserts were apple pie in a cheesy crust and some sorbet. not much of a selection.
i'm sorry that our experiences there have not been great, as i was hoping for a local eatery that could produce some exciting new dishes. perhaps that's the problem - trying too hard. mm has delivered 51 menus in 86 weeks. this one was quite quirky, with a "huge" ribeye for $42, twice-cooked duck, halibut, cod, steelhead, and lamb, all with unusual sides, (crispy pig's ear?) for entrees.
the decaf americano was very good. there was a decent selection of wines by the glass, and our waiter was a delight, good-natured and extremely knowledgeable about the menu and the drinks. but an overall rating of "okay" is not enough for us to want to try again.

our favorite restaurant in calgary. we have been tomodelmilk more than a 1/2 dozen times, either the 2 of us or with a large group. every single time, we had very attentive service and the restaurant has been extremely accommodating with food allergies and modifying dishes where they could. if they couldn't be modified - they let us know at the time of ordering and always have come up with great alternatives. sure, they get busy and sometimes the food takes a bit longer - it's not mcdonald's for gosh sakes! the menu is always interesting and the sunday night dinners are fabulous. by the way, why would somebody complain if they got free oysters? if you don't eat oysters, just thank them and say no thanks.

we recently had an absolutely delicious and fun dining experience atmodelmilk. it helped that our friends who joined us are also terrific company, however to add to that the ambiance ofmodelmilk surely compliments that vibrant and lively atmosphere.  my hubby and i enjoyed their signature and scrumptious calamari starter, while our friends’ munched onmodelmilk’s manchego & chive fries. then for the entrée, i enjoyed the most delicious maple hill chicken served over a cheddar waffle. modelmilk has certainly put itself on the top of my fav resto list!

i was looking forward to coming tomodelmilk as i heard a lot of good things about it. however, i was very disappointed by the portion sizes. they were tiny, like appetizer size. the main course literally consisted of six slices of beef, two mushrooms and a lettuce leaf. that dish was $40! and the appetizer consisted of 2 scoops of beef with 2 pita chips for $19! the food itself though was delicious, but definitely not worth it from a value standpoint. i had to go and get fast food after the meal because i was still hungry (and so were other people at our table). way too expensive for the amount of food you get. will not be back.

sunday dinner was incredibly disappointing considering all the good things we'd heard aboutmodelmilk. maybe have some options other than the set menu if it's not an interesting selection.

we came tomodelmilk to try some of their regular items on the 2017 summer feast prix fixe menu for $35/person. the food was inventive and tasty, but after having had an amazing meal at pigeonhole (run by the same team) a few nights earlier, we didn't feel blown away by the food and service in quite the same way atmodelmilk. i recommend giving it a try as their cocktails, shared plates and ambiance are quite fun, but we left feeling a little hungry and hopeful that our next visit will be better.

model milk is easily one of my favourite restaurants in the city. the ambience is cool, i'm a huge fan of sharing small plates in a group to try a little of everything. the food was wonderful and the drinks were great but what set this place apart for me was the amazing service.
we ventured out tomodelmilk to celebrate one of my good friend's engagement as kind of an undercover stagette. she's a low key girl and they still managed to deliver and make her feel special without embarrassing her or drawing too much attention. our server brought us a complimentary round of champagne and an appetizer, and explained the concept of the restaurant well. he made some stellar recommendations and was extremely attentive without being intrusive. i look forward to returning!

oh man, it’s been waaaaaaaaaaaay to long since my last trip(s) tomodelmilk (here and here). they still offer their $40.00 sunday supper’s which i think is one of the best deals in the city! i met up with p during the long weekend to try their spanish tapas theme (sunday dinner’s theme changes every weekend). the vibe is chill with sweet tunes, friendly and knowledgeable staff, blah blah blah, let’s get to the smorgasbord of dishes.

a very underwhelming experience. i went into this restaurant with high expectations having read reviews and expecting an amazing food experience. there was nothing stellar about the food, and it tasted like it was new cooks given free rein to create flavour profiles without actually tasting what they are cooking. table of three, appetizer, three mains, beef, pork, and a burger; for the price that was being paid, the food experience was disappointing and forgettable. slow kitchen staff cooking mediocre food, with the server telling us while waiting for our food; because the food is cooked fresh it is taken longer to bring out. there are far better restaurants in the city and for the same price the customer will get a great food experience. save your money, modelmilk is not worth the price and the food is not worth the wait.

currently felt by many to be alberta’s most important restaurant, british columbia native and chef/owner justin leboe’s training taking him from napa valley to new york to copenhagen throughout the years, modelmilk was booked for dinner during my first day in calgary, an early saturday seat at the counter providing full-view of the kitchen run by executive chef eric hendry.

housed in an old dairy, a quadruple-tiered space with a bar at bottom, seats along a loft as well as the main floor and kitchen built into a former loading dock, modelmilk is best described as modern canadian cooking with an ingredient-driven focus, the menu changing frequently save for a few signatures and divided into bar snacks, small plates, large plates and large format (for two.)

without doubt a going concern, every seat filled save for a lone walk-in barstool by 7:30pm, it is with pleasantries that patrons are greeted at a hostess podium up a short flight of steps, the white walls decorated in old signage lightly reverberating overhead music often drowned out by the din of clinking cutlery and conversing voices.

served by a young man with a british accent who proudly proclaimed himself a sommelier between jokey rehearsed lines, a pleasant shtick that only wore thin when it led to him later omitting part of the order, it was after some perusal and questions bout portion-sizes that a four-course meal was crafted of seven plates, the non-alcoholic “careful you” an absolute steal at $6cad for sour apple puree thickening brewed tea, lemon and mellow bitters.

told up front that the assemblage of plates would be “a lot” of food, a truthful statement to some degree but certainly no more volume that most fine-dining tasting menus, it was with a plate of tangy sourdough alongside a knob of house-cultured butter that the meal got underway, the decision to charge for bread justified by the loaf’s robust crust and springy crumb while four savory doughnuts registered somewhere between gougeres and cheez-its beneath an avalanche of finely-grated cheddar slowly melting over the warm dough.

intrigued by the produce-focused small-plates, an expected emphasis on root vegetables and tubers given sub-zero temperatures outside, two roasted carrots beneath a dusting of crumbled nuts was soon presented in a pool of vibrant orange ‘harissa,’ the follow-up of charred sweet potato topped in shaved chicken cracklins’ made equally complex by way of airy taleggio cream and savory broth added at the tableside.

always happy to see rougie duck, the quebec-based purveyor repeatedly outperforming hudson valley’s best in the past, it is without hesitation that i can say chef hendry’s dry-aged breast not only out-portions, but also outshines that at michelin 3* eleven madison park in manhattan, the crisp skin and a ribbon of fat around a rosy breast well paired to sweet mole while the confit leg found even more umami in a smear of black garlic.

partaking in an $8cad double espresso before dessert, the combination of a small pastry station and a plate forgotten due to too much chatter seeing the bold brew long-gone before either plate arrived, suffice it say that no meal atmodelmilk should end without at least a slice of the signature sweet n’ savory apple pie served warm and sloppy, the baba au rhum-gateau basque hybrid entitled ‘twice baked brioche’ no less delicious with gooey pudding center rich in booze and almond paste with orange zest playing well off the aromatic whipped cream topping.
