trying too hard. for all the buzz about model milk, i was expecting more than one "omg this is incredible" moment. i didn't even get one. on our second visit everything was voted "okay" by our family group of 20-somethings and 60-somethings. the place was incredibly noisy and the food did not make up for the difficulty talking and hearing. shrimp rolls were very good. fried green tomato was okay, but a huge portion for a starter. fries with cheese - huge portion, enough for three people - good but not great. burgers were 4 inches high, hard to bite into, chunky mushrooms fell out everytime you picked the burger up. steelhead trout was perfectly cooked, served with some pleasant greens and a very traditional creamy tarragon sauce. boudin noir with gnocchi - weird and tasteless gnocchi, all 4 of them, maybe 6 or 8 chunks of sausage, a light dish as advertised. the mushroom vegetarian dish was okay too. for dessert, the bag of donuts was proclaimed delicious, but there were only 4 little donuts so not really enough to share unless you wanted just a tiny taste of dessert. the rhubard sauce was a nice spring touch. the chocolate cake was over the top - too many things going on, with chunks of chocolate-covered pretzel and some kind of peanut crunch candy in a fairly dry chocolate cake layered with a vaguely cherry-flavoured icing, topped with a flavourless runny milk sorbet.other desserts were apple pie in a cheesy crust and some sorbet. not much of a selection.
i'm sorry that our experiences there have not been great, as i was hoping for a local eatery that could produce some exciting new dishes. perhaps that's the problem - trying too hard. mm has delivered 51 menus in 86 weeks. this one was quite quirky, with a "huge" ribeye for $42, twice-cooked duck, halibut, cod, steelhead, and lamb, all with unusual sides, (crispy pig's ear?) for entrees.
the decaf americano was very good. there was a decent selection of wines by the glass, and our waiter was a delight, good-natured and extremely knowledgeable about the menu and the drinks. but an overall rating of "okay" is not enough for us to want to try again.
