the sushi bar was busy, and the dining room was full of people partaking of a wide-ranging menu that includes yakitori, agedashi tofu, and even motsu-ni (tripe and intestine stew). i was especially interested in trying the ika geso karaage. geso are the legs of the squid, which are deep fried to the delight of japanese and non-japanese diners alike. hit them with a squeeze of lemon, and those legs are delicious–chewy in thatgoodsquid way, begging for a beer to accompany them. so what does miyabi’s ika geso karaage teach us about sex? it’s all about making the terrifying tantalizing. if you’ve ever had the opportunity to eat a true kaiseki meal, you know that japanese foo

ambiance of restaurant sets miyabi apart from the mall competition. the seattle area's population of asians and foodies guarantees a wealth ofgoodjapanese restaurants. run a google search of popular seattle-area sushi restaurants and you'll see listings of joints in the international district, downtown, belltown, queen anne, wallingford, madison valley and university district.

people in south seattle know of a hidden gem: miyabi restaurant in tukwila. granted, one is tempted to look past an eatery in the parkway square strip mall with toys "r" us and jared jewelry. miyabi draws lunch-time office workers and shoppers and families for dinner.

i don't eat sushi, but others tell me miyabi's offerings are good. i prefer the entree offerings -- pork tonkatsu, tempura udon or soba -- for which i'll offer a stamp of approval.

what really sets miyabi apart from the hipster competitors up north is the ambiance of the tukwila eatery. the little touches like the modest flat stones upon which the chopsticks rest scream out cool. the decor is remarkable. the redo of the restroom -- the kitschy wallpaper and basin sink -- had me wishing that i could remodel my bathroom and hire miyabi's designer.

miyabi's entertainment sets it apart from other japanese restaurants in the area. a man playing a concertina with italian, french and japanese tunes entertains on saturday evenings. special events include a "trash fashion show" in which models don wardrobes made of phone books, wine corks, and other disposable items.

the best (or worst) aspect of miyabi is that it's located next to a half price books. if you haven't spent enough money on sushi and sake, you could undoubtedly drop a few more dollars on used books and albums.

miyabi rocks!. miyabi is the best sushi bar in the seattle area, period. all due respect to the plethora ofgoodsushi bars in the pacific northwest, but i give miyabi the top nod based on these critical facts:

super fresh fish - that's a must. miyabi breaks down most of their fish in house, this is a big deal

traditional and modern preparations - miyabi stays true to authentic tried and true sushi preparations that taste just like you are in tokyo or osaka yet tries to stay in front of the new sushi curve by constantly offering unique and forward thinking preparations

and of course the ambience - miyabi is fun, fresh & funky. the sushi chefs masa & antonio are friendly, funny and great chefs.

try miyabi, it's awesome!

tukwila gem. this small sushi restaurant is "hidden" on the corner of a nondescript strip mall. upon entering, you're suddenly transported away from the warehouse district and into a young (not "hip'), fun, unpretentious restaurant that would blend into any urban city.

the staffs are friendly and cheerful, but can be slow at times.

the food ranges fromgoodto excellent. the vegetable croquette can taste unimaginative and oily, the chicken katsu is somewhat bland and dry. however, they are great where it counts. the sushi is reliably tasty and fresh. the rice has agoodtexture. the rolls are well-made and of appropriately "bite-sized." furthermore, the menu has quite a range. there are numerous play-it-safe items, such as vegetables rolled in a lovely tofu skin, and several adventurous plates, such as the beef tongue stew.
