medium rare

jenna golden january 5, 2015restaurantreview , reviews there is something very refreshing about a small and tailored menu. to me it says that therestaurantknows what it does well, and is dedicated to focusing on those items and ensuring they are always done right. enter medium rare , the d.c. go-to for steak frites, which was opened by tom gregg and mark bucher in cleveland park back in 2011. therestaurantwas an instant hit, pulling its inspiration from parisian spots such as le relais de l'entrecôte which serve high quality steak frites, and nothing else. and in recent years it has expanded with a second outpost in barracks row. however, medium rare is also known for their brunch, and every year they do a new year's day pajama brunch that my friends and i decided to attend just a few days ago.

medium rare is a steak fritesrestaurantfrom the same people who brought you bgr. the inside draws from an upscale brasserie theme: exposed brick, low ceilings, wooden floors, with granite-topped metal tables filling the sizable space. the lighting shifts with the time; during the daytime, light streams in the large windows, but at night it gets real dim. it's clean and simple, with a little elegant flair in between.

medium food, lousy service. the food at medium rare is nothing to write home about. the steak comes well done even when you ask for rare and the fries are so-so. the service is truly bad: even at 5 pm , with fewer than 6 parties in the place.

mediocre medium rare. when arestaurantserves only one entree, they'd better do it well. medium doesn't do its only menu item -- steak frites-- well at all. the appetizer salad is mediocre, the steak is worse than mediocre, and the fries are soggy. the good/bad news is that they'll give you a second helping of the above. even though i hadn't eaten all day, i turned down the seconds. enough said.

fantastic!!. i was so excited to hear about thisrestaurantopening up because my favoriterestaurantin the world is in paris and its called l'entrecote and medium rare is the same exact concept, which is streak frites only and all you need to know is how you want your steak cooked. not only is it a great concept but the food exceeded my expectations, in other words, the food was amazing! the steak was cooked to perfection, exactly how i wanted it....rare and my gf got hers medium rare which was cooked perfectly as well and the cut was perfect and the meat was delicious. the sauce was mmm mmm good and the frites (fries) were fantastic as well as the salad that comes with the meal. not only was the food amazing so was the price, its $20 per meal not including drinks of course and the service was great, the staff was super friendly and accommodating. all in all, i had a great experience and i will definitely be going there all the time. i highly recommend thisrestaurantto anyone who loves good food because thats what you will get.
