a nice gem in the cultural district. had a chance to take my dad for a thank you dinner in town and a friend recommended meat and potatoes on penn ave. i don't spend much time in town these days so i am always excited to hear about a newplaceto eat. meat & potatoes is a self described gastropub and i would agree with that moniker.

we were in a bit of a hurry so not as much time as i would like to sit and really enjoy the place. we did have time to enjoy the poutine appetizer and some small entrees. i had the short ribs flat bread and my dad had the bbq brisket sandwich special. i really enjoyed the poutine, although the cheese curds did not give quite the squeak of the curds you get in canada for the same dish. the brisket had a great spicy slaw and sauce that made for an excellent sandwich. the meat was tender and moist which is not as common as it should be in around town. the flat bread was also fresh and delicious. i would like to have had some more of the short ribs, but the dish was well balanced and very enjoyable.

theplacehas a great buzz and reasonable prices especially considering the location and quality of food. i did take home a pot de creme for my wife which she indicates was quite good and you will find no harder critic of desert than my wife, so that's high praise. after my recent "fear and loathing" food experience in las vegas, this was a great welcome home

great new place. definitely worth checking out. we were there on the third night of service -- service wasn't without a hitch but it was perfectly fine and the food was almost uniformly very good. the space was great -- great atmosphere, great vibe. perfectplacefor dinner in the cultural district, right next to the o'reilly theater. i would definitely go back.

a foodie's delight! located in the cultural district, this is a greatplaceto go before/after a show or just when looking for great food.
the menu is not overwhelming, but has an eclectic sampling sure to please everyone.
as appetizers the fried pickles are good and the marrow is worth a try---hey, it's anthony bourdain's choice for a death row meal.
the entrees are served on warm plates and portions are perfectly sized and spiced.
the drinks and food made for a wonderful evening out. i would definitely return.

i live in louisiana, and all i can say is that thisplacecould definitely hang with the top places in new orleans. i had the fried pickles (best i've ever had), along with the wild boar sloppy joe w/ bbq chips. everything was awesome. the true star of the show, however, was the grilled bread, which only cost $3! it came with an amazing butter and homemade strawberry jam and was absolutely perfect. my buddy had the fried chicken which came with biscuits and a coffee-bacon jam. he gave me a biscuit with the jam and it was off-the-charts good. this truly was one of the best lunches of my entire life. i'll definitely be back, the next time i'm in town.

the food here is well over-priced, small-portioned and very bland and distasteful. while not rude, the staff is very neglectful and i felt ignored and out ofplaceduring this dining experience. this is not surprising if any one recalls the restaurant named chasons (circa-1980s) on steubenville pike in crafton, pa (long gone - now the fireside inn). the exec chef mr.deschanz was associated with that as well and it seems has brought the miseries to this establishment as well. no thanks!

the commoner, hotel monaco, meat & potatoes, primanti brothers, steel cactus, and waffles incaffeinated. if there was oneplacei wanted to try in pittsburgh, it was meat & potatoes. as pittsburgh's first gastropub, chef richard deshantz knocked it out of the park by featuring a veritable montage of some of my favorite foods. and since the 2011 opening of meat & potatoes, he's taken over the downtown pittsburgh scene by opening up butcher & the rye and tako, in addition to his bistro, nine on nine.

make a reservation because thisplaceis so good it's the only way to get a table. this restaurant is excellent and is putting the hurt on several downtown restaurants that have gotten away with crappy food and service. we ate breakfast at the bar and the food and service was perfect.

over hyped. ok i decided to book a rezzy a month ahead of time so i could finally try out this place. since it's a tough table to procure, i had really high expectations...

bottom line, thisplaceis way overrated. everyone is trying so hard to be hip and cool it's amusing. the food was ok but honestly the cuisine doesn't deserve the accolades it receives. honestly, it's on par with most manhattan diners (which are pretty good) but it is clearly not on the same level as places like altius, salt of the earth, eleven and the like.

anybody that has been anywhere outside of pittsburgh will tell you thisplaceis trying too hard. thisplacewould be an absolute joke in chicago, la or nyc. (probably out of biz by now)

and don't get me started on butcher & the rye...so annoying, get over yourselves yinzers.

don't waste you time trying to get a table at this place...

what about the drinks.. i agree with most of the good reviews of meat and potatoes. it`s a funplacewith good food. we`ve been there many times and enjoyed the food very much. the hanger steak is our favorite and the mussels wonderful and plentiful. however, the drinks on our last few visits were so weak i complained. when we mentioned the problem, the next drink was a good glass of bourbon. however, this weekend our drinks were bad. there wasn`t enough alcohol in the glass for 2 sips. has anyone else noticed this problem?

much needed. fried chicken livers.....what else can i say. foodies understand that this is theplaceto try things we love and have good drinks along with them. the pork chop with the crispy and fresh slaw is a must. brined and then grilled to perfection with apple and fennel slaw makes it special. the libations are ridiculously good. ryes and mixers that are rival to any in the city, and a small but pretty good craft beer menu doesn't hurt either. overall great experience and the waiter was very helpful in helping me decide on the temperature of the chop. will frequent as often as i can just have to watch my budget and save up for it.

favorite pittsburgh brunch. i have been to both sunday brunch and late night shindigs at meat & potatoes many, many times. the brunch selection has a refreshing selection of internationally-influenced breakfasts, and gourmet takes on american classics. and the bloody mary bar? check out the liquor infusions of the day (jalapeno tequila is a favorite of mine) and get creative with the buffet options for your morning drink! this is one of my favorite pittsburgh brunch traditions.

the cocktails and wines are also great in the evening, with a small but quality beer selection. great bar snacks, and a greatplaceto meet up with friends. i highly recommend making reservations well ahead of time on almost any night of the week, especially if there is an event happening downtown or in the theatre district.

love the food--the policies suck. i want to start this off by saying that my fiance and i love the food at m&p. we have been there several times, and have been happy to spend a ton of money there. that being said, after an experience we had today, i feel as if thisplaceis getting too big for its britches. i understand that was a football sunday, so when we walked through the doors at 10:50 am, i did not expect to get a table.this has happened to us before, so we happily went to the bar and enjoyed the food and the awesome bartenders. so, today to my surprise, when we walked in an found about 10 empty seats at the bar, we were told that there was an hour wait for the barstools...for barstools! i have never in my life had to have a reservation for a barstool. i thought that the spirit of bars was to be first come, first served. so, while we were ready to spend money, they chose to leave those stools empty, thus alienating repeat and good paying customers. it rubbed me the wrong way and seemed a snobby way to do business. it will be a while before i spend money at m&p again.
