max's oyster bar

amazing place.
tried the oysters firsttimein my life and they were pretty good.
the bartender helped with nice selections of the oyster along with a great suggestion of amazing white wine to go along.
overall had a greattimeat this place.

the place was packed but the lady helping us managed to get us a nice outdoor table. we ordered a mix platter of the freshest oysters, baked clams and fell in love with their oyster sauce.
would love to back the nexttimei visit.

nothing but a faux up-scale watering hole. i went out with my family on friday 22 july 2011 for lunch with the expectation that this restaurant lived up to it's reputation as a fine dining establishment.

firstly, we were treated to a french waiter who was incredibly rude and snobbish. he did not review the specials nor explain the menu. we then ordered the risotto and scallop dish as it was recommended at $15 a plate (a little pricey for lunch comparatively). i would like to say that as a visitor who has dined in fine establishments in sydney, london, new york, and vancouver, this place takes the cake for the worst risotto and scallop dish which is one of my alltimefavorites that i always order when i travel.

the sauce was watery, the scallops were served broken, and the risotto tasted gummy and as if it had been made the day before. i sent my dish back and received push back from the waiter who explained that presenting a dish where half of the sauce was left off the plate, just happens in the process of being a chef. i had to speak with him further to send it back.

overall, i would not recommend this place to any one unless they were looking for a provincial faux up-scale drinking hole in hartford.

had the pleasure of eating lunch today at max's. the menu was easy to follow, watered very helpful and my lunch was amazing!! had the fluke over brussels sprouts. was my firsttimeto have fluke and it was yummy. if i am ever in the area again, i'll promise you, i'll be back!!!

not worth it. my husband and i went there for our anniversary since we have max's tavern by our home and have really enjoyed it. we drove 50 minutes to get there, and it was not worth it. for a "fine dining" restaurant, the atmosphere was very loud. the menu had a nice selection of appetizers, however, it took forever for them to come (about 20 minutes) we got the boston sushi roll and the lobster buns. although those were very good, we were halfway done with our appetizers when our food came to the table!!! i asked the server to keep them until we were at least done with our apps ( we had sat outside and the table wasnt even big enough to hold 4 plates). the server did what we had asked, but as soon as our apps were removed from the table, our dinner came. now for a fine dining or any restaurant, i dont appreciate being rushed out. i ordered the scallops and they were 27.00. now, i dont mind paying this much, however, i got 3 scallops and then half of a fourth one. i showed this to our waitress and she said thay they all go by weight so that is why i got a ugly looking half scallop on my plate.. by thistimei just wanted to leave. she had said she would tell her manager but no one ever came over. she then offered us a free dessert on the house however those took another 15 minutes just to get to us. we ended up sitting down around 7:00pm, and didnt leave until past 9 pm.. which means we waited a very long time, but then got our food all at once.. i was very dissappointed and will discourage my friends and family for going there. our bill came to 129.00 and it was totally not worth it..

disappointing. we did arrive without a reservation. we were seated right away....not a great table, but okay. ordered bloody marys that came to the table tasting of nothing but horseradish. i asked the waiter to please bring me something else and we were pretty much ignored for the rest of the night. the asian clamari salad was very dry and the shrimp rolls were a mess. they still had the tails on the shrimp and they were wrapped in this crispy roll. were we supposed to eat the hard tails? our entrees....the shrimp wrapped in proscuitto were very tasty.....though very salty and had me wishing for water the whole way home. the paella looked beautiful but tasted very bland.
our waiter meanwhile had been spending a lot oftimetalking to the table next to us. he was even still talking to them as he (without looking our way) handed over dessert menus!! did not ask us if we wanted desert or coffee..... just handed us the menus. this was after waiting about 25 minutes after we had finished our food. we did not stay for any more. we were really counting on a great meal....after all .....it was a max restaurant. we instead left vowing never to set foot in another one. the rule here is do not send anything back or you will have no service....sad.

nyc style and taste here in ct. while this place is not cheap, you get great value and wonderful food. the menu changes all thetimebut the waitstaff are knowledgeable and talented. the special lobster based cobb salad is amazing, but so is everything from the bread and ?pickled?carrots to the fresh seafood and everything else. don't let the "oyster bar" name fool you. while these are wonderful and varied, everything, including the steaks and chicken are wonderfully done. well worth the trip. even in this economy, this place is usually full, so call for reservations.
