top notch restaurant. my wife and i came across max's oyster bar 14 years ago as we were wandering through west hartford. we stopped in for a drink and a bite to eat and stayed for dinner. since then we have been there many, many times, sometimes for an occasion, sometimes for a family function and sometimes just for the heck of it. it is always a great time.

they have top notch service, excellentfoodand a high energy dynamic. it's a great restaurant for a date or to take clients or even a casual meal.

the raw bar is top notch. crisp, delicious shellfish piled high, but every item on the menu is made with care and is extremely fresh and flavorful.

i noticed that one reviewer mentioned about the fried clams, and i agree. they do friedfoodextremely well - clams, oysters, calamari... but then again they do everything well it seems. my personal favorited are the 'max's skyscraper' which is a three tiered mountain of shellfish both raw and cooked, they make a great seared tuna and anything they do with sea bass is ridiculously good.

i would never personally order a steak there, but a guest of ours once did and it was excellent as well.

max's is a personal favorite and is highly recommended.

on friday night right after work, i'd suggest you avoid the bar, though. it gets mobbed with large groups of young professionals letting off some steam. get a table. you will be much happier!

prices have gone up 25% to 30% over a 3 year period and thefoodis the same. a nice place to eat but really pretty overpriced at this point. stopped in for an ale late one afternoon.. $8.75 for a draft beer....huh?

very nice place and overall, good food. on a busy saturday night, it was pretty noisy.foodcould have been hotter. crab cakes were tastey but too much breading. scallops were good. the chocolate beignets were awesome and i would go back just to get them again.

thefoodis very good here, but the service is the worst in west hartford. the bar area is especially bad. if you want to pay a premium for bad service from nasty waitstaff, then come on in.

we had a very friendly scotish waiter who was nice. arefoodwas almost the best thing i have eaten (besides ginza jappenneese which is better)

amazing experience. went there on valentine's day weekend to celebrate my girlfriend's and i anniversary, and we had the best service ever from the minute we walked in with greeting cards, to our very helpful server. thefoodwas great and our server was very nice and knowledgeable of the menu and guided us through a great meal. i'll definitely plan to return there with friends and family.

awesome..... we love this place!!!!! the service is great and thefoodis awesome. the raw bar is always a delight; and after dining more than 30 times at max's oyster bar, it has never been a disappointment. the jumbo lump crab cakes are delightful.. and for the record they have one of the best price points for veuve clicquot in connecticut. can you say 79.00 for a great bottle of champagne. don't miss this place!!!

not worth it. my husband and i went there for our anniversary since we have max's tavern by our home and have really enjoyed it. we drove 50 minutes to get there, and it was not worth it. for a "fine dining" restaurant, the atmosphere was very loud. the menu had a nice selection of appetizers, however, it took forever for them to come (about 20 minutes) we got the boston sushi roll and the lobster buns. although those were very good, we were halfway done with our appetizers when ourfoodcame to the table!!! i asked the server to keep them until we were at least done with our apps ( we had sat outside and the table wasnt even big enough to hold 4 plates). the server did what we had asked, but as soon as our apps were removed from the table, our dinner came. now for a fine dining or any restaurant, i dont appreciate being rushed out. i ordered the scallops and they were 27.00. now, i dont mind paying this much, however, i got 3 scallops and then half of a fourth one. i showed this to our waitress and she said thay they all go by weight so that is why i got a ugly looking half scallop on my plate.. by this time i just wanted to leave. she had said she would tell her manager but no one ever came over. she then offered us a free dessert on the house however those took another 15 minutes just to get to us. we ended up sitting down around 7:00pm, and didnt leave until past 9 pm.. which means we waited a very long time, but then got ourfoodall at once.. i was very dissappointed and will discourage my friends and family for going there. our bill came to 129.00 and it was totally not worth it..

great experience. saturday nights, this restaurant is insanely crowded. guess that's a good thing but make sure you make a reservation if you want to get in! i sat with my friend by the host stand and this chick with curly brown hair waited on me, really awesome girl. i think the best thing about this restaurant is the service. she was extremely easy to talk to and helped a lot with ourfoodchoices. she recommended the tuna tacos and a sashimi plate to start. the sashimi should have been better. the hamachi is very oxidated, tough and chewy. just don't order that and you'll be fine. everything else was awesome though. we had a filet and a pan roasted lobster in some sort of cream sauce. she said it was outstanding so we tried it and of course we loved it. the filet had some weird macaroni and cheese thing and eggplant, not my favorite. we'll definitely be back soon and ask for younger staff. it seems as though they know what they are talking about and are way nicer then the miserable old people.
