serious wine tasters only - welcomed!!. if you are not a serious wine taster then this is not the place to visit!! the staff are unable to see between the grapes as to people having agoodfun time. max's - if you are only after a certain cliental then i suggest you put up a sign - saying serious wine tastings only - that way all the fun people will spend their money at all the other friendly and welcoming wineries in the area instead! pietrina

lovely winery with fantastic views over the ocean. we arrived late on a busy day for lunch with no booking and was no trouble.

started with the kingfish sashimi which was pretty tasty, then for main was the fish which was soft and well cooked, but that and the mash was very salty.. and also the pork which was pretty nice with a nice sauce. desert was very nice as well.

there is some verygoodcompetition on the peninsula now with some brilliant restaurants. this might not be in the very top echelon but the service was absolutely fantastic and this place is well worth a visit as the food isgoodand the view is great!

max's at red hill is a beautiful location. it's the only winery in the area which has views of the water. food is delicious and their pinot noir is a must. i have been here for lunch a few times and it'sgoodto see the menu changes regularly. the staff and service is great too.

unfortunately there was nothinggoodabout my first visit to max's resteraunt. my main meal was cold and so was the side of fries. the waitress was rude and awkward, it took her 15 minutes to get the sugar for our coffee by which that time our coffee went cold. very disappointed, i will definetly not be returning.

headed to red hill for lunch and have to admit i am still undecided as to wether i like it or not. the location is beautiful, staff are lovely and attentitive. but the food to me, wasn'tgoodenough. the raviolo was hard around the edges, though the bug was quite nice. the fish was just okay. desert was the best part.

i don't think i'd give it another try, nothing really grabbed me apart from the view. perhaps it was just an off day? given the price i'm not sure it lives up to expectation.

lovely view,goodfood..... happen to dine here after visiting the cellar door for a wine tasting and it was a very enjoyable experience. the food was lovely bar the desserts. entree of scallops and the lamb were lovely as was the gippsland eye fillet. however the dessert left much to desire. the view on the other hand made up for it. i could just sit there all day and dream.....but then theres the bill. it is more on the expensive side but if they improve on the desserts i think it is well worth it...

best view 'worst' food!. best view worst of the worst food! valentines day: start with tasting plate "off" warm oysters - bad start! try to execute a menu clearly without finesse.

entree: 'calamari confusion' wasabi sweet crusted? & mayo & capsicum coulis? frozen and chewy beside mound of overdressed mizuna & daikon?, ocean trout with cous cous chilli & gruyere cheese? i am not making this up.

main: tuscan pork very fatty pork belly rolled up with kipfler potatoes par boiled days before dark grey and inedible.
dessert plate to share was rich creamy white & dark chocolate slabs, plus a mille-feuille filled with strawberries & passion fruit curd (no that was not passionfruit curd but thickened cream & sugar??)
at $155/ea clearly a menu for lovers looking into each others eyes and not what was served to them.
the peninsula has too many excellent dining tables available to them to be duped into paying for a view.
suggestion box: look around you times & menus have changed since 1988.
service: verygoodbut a need to taste or; have a training-day on the wines they are serving, it's only one label 'red hill estate'
menu: don't overcomplicate each dish until it is unrecognisable. look what is being returned on plates and take stock. execute four entrees and four mains with finesse and then build on that!goodluck.

bitterly disappointed. after much research we booked max's for my daughter's 21st. the service was a joke: the waiter didn't know his menu at all, dropped cutlery, took 20 minutes to bring us our first drink, and refused to give us water until the wine was served (20 mins), despite us travelling 2 hours to get there. of the four mains, one was sensational (the duck), and the others very pedestrian. the spatchcock was coles supermarket on agoodday. won't be returning.

lovely views, goodfood. the restaurant has beautiful views and great service. we had the ginger and sake cured scallops, szechwan and honey cured salmon, rosemary and garlic stuffed tuscan porchetta, and the grilled eye fillet of gippsland beef. overall the food was good, but not amazing. i really enjoyed the stuffed porchetta, everything else could have done with more flavours. overall a nice experience.

ambiance is nice. scenery even better. as for the food, it is sophisticatedly delicious without being pretentious like many famous restaurants.

we had the following
start - tasting plate consisting of almost all the entrees available. 2 of us shared this & thankful we did so since it had enough on it to get agoodamount to taste.

mains
spatchcock marinated in anchovies- this was so tasty& the meat so moist it was great!

duck breast cooked with a crispy skin & accompanied by shredded duck meat in a spring roll & long beans. beautifully cooked with the beans almost being a palate cleanser for the rich tasting duck.

both mains were of substantial man sized portions

sweet
we had a tasting plate to share. this was wonderful & sufficient in portion to satisfy us both. there were 4 different sets in our tasting. the lime sorbet & orange pudding just cut through all the previous tastes lingering on one's palate. this allowed us to really enjoy the rubatb jelly in a custard cream, the coffee ice cream with chocolate gateau, poached pear in wine wrapped in a super thin pastry & yet another delicious ice cream.

i would recommend this restaurant to anyone as a must do on a visit to the mornington peninsular

ps they make their own olive oil & morello cherry balsamic vinegar. both are served when you arrive & are delicious as well!

staff are very attentive in a casual but efficient way
