for a bohemian-style dive, this is one of the greatest places to get some comfort food.

love it!. you can't help but crave "the big dog from texas, all the way, no slaw with a side of mac-n-cheese!" it puts me in a food coma for the rest of the day but is well worth it!

pretty good food. i had chick noodle soup and potato salad. both were good, homemade and unique in some fashion. attentive service, but not overly so. weird warehouse-y interior is good for a music venue or dive bar, not my thing for a restaurant. i'm interested to come back for a burger and revise my review. i'll come back

while in charlotte we had a late night meal at lupie's cafe, a long standing charlotte institution serving up delicious chili in a darkish neighborhood bar-like comfotable atmosphere. unfortnately the burger was nowhere near as good as the chili. the patty tasted like it had been frozen and with so many great freshly packed burger places around - no use having a froze one! the veggie plate with mac & cheese, carrots and salad was tasty and hit the spot. next time i'll stick to the chili if i'm going for m

lupie's is a clt icon!. so bummed to see so many bad reviews of lupie's on here. are ya'll yanks, expecting something other than what lupie's really is? as a clt native living in colorado now, i crave lupie's all the time. to name a few things i miss:

1.the server sitting down at my booth (doesn't know me) and giving me some friendly attitude.
2. 'nana pudding.
3. killer cornbread
4. mashed potato/meatloaf monday
5. iced tea that is always just right
6. pintos that melt in your mouth
7. a restaurant of questionable cleanliness- i've never figured out how it passes its health inspection, but that's the character of the place. the cash register area alone is a veritable museum (or used to be, anyway)
8. walking out to the back lot to my car, and peering into a dim-looking kitchen, seeing someone sitting out back on a turned over milkcrate smoking a doobie on their break.

charlotte has so many good restaurants now, you can spend plenty of money on great, expensive food. or, you can get a little slice of clt history with- possibly not the finest meal you'll ever eat- great, cheap food at lupie's. love it for what it is, not what you think it should be!!!!

an east charlotte trasure!. this is some of the best food charlotte has to offer! i wish charlotte had more restaurants with the character and charm that lupie's has.

hit or miss. i've only eaten at lupie's a few times, so maybe i give them the benefit of the doubt. they seem to be a little hit or miss though. i ordered the chili, which was tasty, and a generous portion. however, the burger and chips was nothing to write home about. the burger was okay, but the chips were stale.

the atmosphere is very relaxed, the decor is eclectic. very casual, which i have no problem with. i don't need fine dining, just good, fresh food, which didn't seem to be a consistent on my visits.

their menu is thick with vegetarian options and well crafted burgers. it is a very casual enviroment and you instantly feel comfortable. it is a dive and if you are a clean freak then don’t take this ride but you are missing out.

if you think filth, dust, and grease are funky, this is the place to eat. if you like peeling paint over your head (and over the food), then this is the place to eat. if you find it intriguing to wonder when someone last dusted the fixtures, then come quick to lupie's. if you think it's cool to drink from mason jars, then here is the place for you.

the "cincinatti" [their deliberate misspelling] chili is inauthentic, awful. my dinner companion, a gentle and kind man, said of his burger, "it's big." he also said sweetly of the restaurant, "it's beyond charming." when you walk in, the lobby telegraphs indifference and contempt for customers. that is when to walk out.

the cole slaw was not vile, but it just made it to ordinary. corn bread is dry. i do not comprehend how anyone can come back to this place despite the poverty chic that it exudes. if i thought faux poverty and real dirt were automatically chic, i would just renounce all wealth, wear diapers, and walk about as a mendicant seeking alms, and will before i eat here again or even put my car into their gravel parking lot. nothing about lupie's is worth your time, effort, or money, except the satisfaction of having been to a superlative restaurant, easily one of charlotte's worst.

chili is tasty!. the chili here is really good...they suggested i get a half and half order to mix two of the flavors which was a great idea and i loved it! i got mine over the spaghetti which was delicious. the restaurant is small but cozy and the service was good.

just a bunch.... of greasy food here. they are much more concerned about portion size over taste or substance. go to this place if you have a fat hungry spouse/date or children. try the nachos.

cool and quirky.. it really doesn't get any realer than this. i feel "at home" when i go to lupie's

lupie's has a set of things they are good at, and they stick to it. you have to be in the mood for what they are serving, and it is always good to sync up with the menu. the menu has a different rotating set of things on it per day of week. there is always chili and chili mac on it tho.

the vibe in there is always good, and the different types of chili really have been hitting the spot this winter.

my lupie's expereince. when i first went to lupies, the food i ordered (chicken wings) was good but the customer service was poor. as for the customer service, someone in their kitchen area saw us come in and held up 2 fingers (which meant 2 people) we nodded yes and then he (without leaving the kitchen area) "pointed" to a table for us to sit at which was near the kitchen. when he finally came to the table he slid some menus at us and became rude after my friend ask would he suggest something on the menu for her because she had not been to the restaurant before. he answered her by giving a smart answer which referred that the request suggesting something from the menu was unnecessary. he was cold and appeared distracted as he looked at us with his cap sitting backwards on his head. my friend placed her order (that he finally did suggest) but did not like the food she ordered. she described the meal as plain, no little flavor. she ate the wings from my plate for the rest of our dinning. we recently went back to lupies for the wings because they were the only thing that seemed really good. this time the wings were horrible and a waste of money. we also ordered the chile dish (2 different types) and they both were just as bad. the waitress later came by and asked how the meal was and i said "not good" and she turned her head and walked away--don't ask a question if you don't like the answer. you're pretty much gambling your money because you don't know when the meal may be good or not. because of the chicken wings at the first visit my friend was going to recommend it to her sister, but she has now decided not. she and i have decided that we will not go back nor recommend lupies to others. we did observe how they treated other people, who did not look like us, a whole lot better. whether or not these people were served better tasting food, i don't know, but the service given to them was more pleasant.
