wow just wow.  i love chinese food, but jerry traunfeld does this szechuan chinese restaurant the right way.  a small brightly lit spot on the north end of broadway on capitol hill serving lesser known szechuan style dishes.  the highlight was the chicken mixed heavily with toasted szechuan peppers, creating an almost numbing sensation in your mouth (without being overly spicy).  the noodles they have are delicious and perfectly cooked.  my favorite dish was the cold beef salad, which had some nice chili heat to it, along with different parts of beef that included the gelatinous bits from when you chill beef.  i will for sure be back to try more items on the menu.  stop by poppy next door, jerry's other restaurant.  it is delicious as well.

we were looking for spicy after our recent travels and lionhead was the perfect choice. it is a casual neighborhood spot on capital hill. from spicy frogs legs to a beef dish made with painted hills beef we found enough zip to put out our need spicy low light. the wine list provides enough choices to match everything on the menu.

we were impressed with this chinese fusion restaurant. we didn't realize at first that it would be an american-chinese fusion menu, but the flavors and food were so good, it didn't matter. all our plates were packed with flavor. my favorite was the bao. service was great.

first of all, you can do under $75 for two people. it's nice that they include gratuity as well. i personally don't know much about authentic chinese cuisine, but i thoroughly enjoyed everything i put in my mouth here. it's helpful to have a server recommend something, which was my experience. that said, the service was on the slow side. but the food... just amazing. fresh noodles, tangy sauces, perfectly fried chicken... can't wait to go back and try more dishes!

as with tray kitchen, some good bites to be found here. but some not-so-good, largely due to interpretation of the dishes. (see photos and explanations below.) fortunately, zhu dang is up front about this, with a mission that emphasizes flavor over tradition. but, as a result, i don’t see chinese immigrants, chinese college-aged students, or those seeking “pure” chinese flavors coming to eat here. the gorgeous space and food menu accompanied by high-end tea and cocktails (all at higher-end prices) will primarily draw the typical capitol hill crowd.
