kambei japanese restaurant

tonight was our first time out at kambei restaurant. we went with friends who recommended it for some quality japanese dining! it was quiet being a sunday night and so the service was great, though i imagine it to be regardless of how busy it is. some of us ordered the fullsetmenu, one had the wagyu beef main, another the tempura seafood and veggie main and i had the assorted sashimi. the presentation was really nice and everything was fresh and of good quality. we will definitely be back!

always high quality food and experience. i love everything about kambei - the atmosphere, quality and authenticity. thesetmenu is recommended and a great way to experience traditional meals i would otherwise not know to order. the service is always exceptional!

my score 4.5 stars.  j & i had dinner here a while ago on a 2 night foody getaway to ballarat.  restrained & peaceful interiorsetthe scene for a memorable evening.  service was laid back, but fabulous (in keeping with the whole vibe of the place).  head guy was very helpful with selection of food.  in the end we shared one standardsetcourse & one extendedsetcourse.  stand-outs were:  all the sashimi (but esp the kingfish), chawanmushi, assorted tempura, matcha ice cream (j) & black sesame ice cream (me), miso black cod (probably the best dish of the night along with the kingfish).  i could take or leave the wagyu beef, but then i'm not a big fan of red meat anyway.  a great time was had - not cheap by ballarat standards maybe, but good value compared to high quality places in melb...

beautiful little restaurant that i definitely wouldn’t have expected to find. i got the kambei course for 40aud that included edamame, small dishes, sashimi, grilled fish, rice, and miso soup.

really even the sashimi and small dishes at the start would’vesetyou back 40aud at any japanese restaurant in the city. flavours were rich and simple and the food was filling.

will definitely go back!

i somehow found myself dining at this quaint little japanese restaurant this past valentine's day. thinking about it now, i'm wondering how i found myself in such a position... oh wait, that's right. i have a girlfriend now, hahaha!

anyway, the gentle souls at kambei were serving a valentine's daysetmenu which we -- yes, we -- decided to try out.

the sashimi, seaweed, maki and miso soup were all great. the beef on the other hand... well let's just say it wasn't really anything special. to me anyway, because i'm asian and i feel like i've eaten that kind of stir fried beef too many times to count in my life that it's just become something... meh. the decor is nice and fancier than mcdonald's, which is a plus if you are like me and have a girlfriend (if i was single i'd gladly go to mcdonald's, every day in fact.. but alas, i didn't choose the boyfriend life, the boyfriend life chose me).

being possibly the only authentic japanese restaurant in ballarat, i would recommend these folks. pop in and say konichiwa if you are so inclined. wait, is that inappropriate?

good value on thesetmenu~ had the $65 menu. overall food was good except for the crumbed sea bream, squid and scallop.. not crunchy enough.
overall service is fantastic which got them a score of 4.

the food was amazing. definitely go thesetmenu. the staff are so friendly too.

amazing!!. kambei is an amazing restuarant - definitely one of ballarat's best, if not the best! i have been here with my family, and it's always a delightful experience. the food is amazing - definitely get sashimi, no questions asked. it is so delicious. thesetmenu is always delightful, and i've also enjoyed the lunch menu. the staff are incredibly friendly, and the service is always impeccable. the ambience is perfect, and i'll definitely be back. thanks kambei!

this is the best japanese you're going to get in ballarat. the restaurant is quiet and clean, the food is delicious and thesetmenu us great value for money. i highly recommend this for a great night out.

value for money and yummy lunch sets. i have tried couple of times to try their lunch sets here but it only opens lunch from fri to sun. finally have chance to try on sunday and i was definitely not disappointed. i ordered sashimi lunchsetwhich had more than 21 pcs fish slices. all fresh and yummy. i will try other sets in the future when i have chance.

best japanese restaurant anywhere. we had our wedding anniversary dinner here on tuesday night. we had the dai kambei banquet menu which was amazing. the ambience of the restaurant is warm and quiet, the service is attentive and impeccable. i happily watched the maitre d do the best wine service and decant on a bottle of vintage wine brought by another customer.

my husband was not able to eat the dessert due to a food allergy and the kitchen was wonderful to supply us with a delicious yuzu granita in it's place with no issue.

i will be returning to the kambei for all major celebrations for as long as they are open.

i highly recommend this restaurant, in fact i cannot recommend it highly enough.

the food is amazing, the service is wonderful and lovely ambience as well. 10/10

beautiful.. a friend and i dined at kambei about a week ago and found the place to be impeccable. kambei is a very beautiful and aesthetically pleasing restaurant, holding very true to its' japanese background. the menus are presented beautifully and it is evident that the staff spent a lot of time planning each detail. i ordered the sashimisetand it was lovely. my friend had the teriyaki chicken and said it was one of the most tastiest teriyaki dishes he has ever tasted. my recommendation would be to try the plum wine! very tasty and relaxing!

consistently excellent. i have regularly been to kambei for about 5 years now with like minded people who all enjoy good fresh food.
i cannot fault the kambei experience, the food is simple fresh, delicious and attractively presented- the service is terrific. i often order thesetbanquet because it is just so good.
the prices are very reasonable and i am sure kambei would rival any restaurant in melbourne, so how lucky are we?

fantastic restaurant. authentic, delicious japanese food. as good as any japanese food i've had in melbourne, and rivaling what i ate in japan. we ordered the $40 weekendsetmenu and were more than satisfied with the quantity. smart, professional and friendly service in a lovely setting. can't wait to go again!

authentic and delicious. we stayed overnight in ballarat and felt like a japanese feast. our hotel was just down the road from the restaurant so we wandered down and were absolutely blown away by the food and the value.
we had the $40setweekday menu and were not left wanting. each course was delicious and well presented. each dish was explained also.
we spent a month in japan earlier this year and this ranks up amongst the best japanese food we have had.
our only criticism would be that each course was brought out too quickly.
would definitely recommend and if we're ever up that way again would definitely return.
