tonight was our first time out at kambei restaurant. we went with friends who recommended it for some quality japanese dining! it was quiet being a sunday night and so the service was great, though i imagine it to be regardless of how busy it is. some of us ordered the full set menu, one had the wagyu beef main, another the tempura seafood and veggie main and i had the assorted sashimi. the presentation was really nice and everything wasfreshand of good quality. we will definitely be back!

booked for saturday 6:30pm. was seated looking against a false wall. was hungry so overlooked this. was handed a single piece of paper as menu. choices very limited. ordered teriyaki chicken meal and tempura meal. edamame beans were far fromfreshand plump. stringy and shrivelled. inedible. miso soup tasted like packet mix from supermarket. rocket salad with a couple of small cherry tomato halves with a nondescript dressing. hardly taste of japan. chicken was cooked adequately but sticky sauce was not so, more like watery gravy substance. extremely disappointed when compared to my last meal here. over 12 months ago. will not be frequenting kambei again. the dining experience at kambei is just another victim of profit over substance judging by the meal received. do not recommend a meal here at all.

a lovely japanese restaurant, their food are reallyfreshand delicious. if you want to save on your pocket, get their takeaway bento at $50, $40 and $30. if you want to stay then be prepare to spend a bit more. for a family of 2 adults and 2 growing kids, i spend about $140. however, we loved everything about them. their bento sets are quite good value, as 1 main will cut u back about $30 to $40. i will come back if i am in the area.

kambei is the best restaurant in ballarat. this is the must place you should go if you are after authentic japanese. the food is amazinglyfresh- especially sashimi. i selected their course menu which restaurant staff recommended. i was glad to take their recommendation. i enjoyed the beautiful food and nice friendly service. i will definitely visit this restaurant again!

kambei is an amazing japanese restaurant located right next to sovereign hill! being aesthetically pleasing with its japanese interior design, it is easily ballarats best japanese!

the vibe is tranquil, while also being unstuffy! service from the professional floor staff is friendly without being overbearing!

the food is fantastic too, withfreshseafood being shipped to ballarat from the footscray market daily! sashimi is a must, as well as the tempura. desserts aren't as strong in the flavour stakes, but still get the job done!

price wise i think it's pretty reasonable, with banquets being able to be paid for for around $60.

overall a great restaurant the all ballarat locals should try for ace japanese!

beautiful food, great service and atmosphere. everythingfreshand creatively presented. not far from town but well worth the drive. would certainly go there again when next on ballarat! love the entrance and left very satisfied.

so impressed with this place. it was by chance that we found this place. was craving for japanese and this place came up top of the list on our search. didn't disappoint us at all in terms of flavour and service. lunch special was in big serving size that we were really full afterwards. sushi and sashimi werefreshas well. definitely go back when we are in ballarat.

not bad.... for a regional experience. pretty good. veryfreshand everything you'd expect from a good japanese restaurant in melbourne or sydney - but not outstanding.
service is good enough and they try. happy.

enjoyed a perfect evening with family at kambei. the service was professional and polite without intruding during our banquet which was outstanding. extremelyfreshand prepared japanese food for a regional area and well worth the visit. food, service and decor all spot on.

this is where i go when i want an utterly delightful lunch. superfreshand delicious food, my favourite plum wine and excellent customer service, delivered in a spacious, quiet and well-designed interior.

i love a window seat so i can watch the world outside and appreciate my mini-japanese-retreat even more

on a recent trip to ballarat, we booked in for lunch at late notice. they were very accommodating on the phone and we were greeted warmly on arrival. there were only two service staff on and it was reasonably busy. a little disappointing to be offered a limited menu but when i enquired we were offered the full a la cart menu, although they did not have sushi on the lunch menu, the kitchen was very accommodating and made sushi for my children.

overall the quality of food was very good, particularly for a regional restaurant, the only disappointing point was that the sashimi plate - although incrediblyfreshand fantastically presented, the fish itself was cut too thick.

i highly recommend this restaurant to people who are visiting ballarat and for locals alike!

value for money and yummy lunch sets. i have tried couple of times to try their lunch sets here but it only opens lunch from fri to sun. finally have chance to try on sunday and i was definitely not disappointed. i ordered sashimi lunch set which had more than 21 pcs fish slices. allfreshand yummy. i will try other sets in the future when i have chance.

you get more than what you pay. during my life i have been in many japanese restaurants in different cities and countries (though i never have been to japan) and this is probably my very favourite. is not a cheap restaurant, but the food is superb, the service is good and the place is quiet and nice. everything tastesfreshand delicate. probably the best restaurant in ballarat (if you like japanese food).

i cannot wait to go back again.

consistently excellent. i have regularly been to kambei for about 5 years now with like minded people who all enjoy goodfreshfood.
i cannot fault the kambei experience, the food is simple fresh, delicious and attractively presented- the service is terrific. i often order the set banquet because it is just so good.
the prices are very reasonable and i am sure kambei would rival any restaurant in melbourne, so how lucky are we?
keep up the wonderful work kambei!
