the course 1 had a good mix of entree andsashimiand grilled salmon with rice and miso soup. chiwanmushi was silky and delicate! the kingfishsashimiwas quite good. vegetable tempura was separate to the course and its portion was quite enough to share between 2 to 3 people. the tempura was fried very nicely and crispy with good mix of vegetable.

my score 4.5 stars.  j & i had dinner here a while ago on a 2 night foody getaway to ballarat.  restrained & peaceful interior set the scene for a memorable evening.  service was laid back, but fabulous (in keeping with the whole vibe of the place).  head guy was very helpful with selection of food.  in the end we shared one standard set course & one extended set course.  stand-outs were:  all thesashimi(but esp the kingfish), chawanmushi, assorted tempura, matcha ice cream (j) & black sesame ice cream (me), miso black cod (probably the best dish of the night along with the kingfish).  i could take or leave the wagyu beef, but then i'm not a big fan of red meat anyway.  a great time was had - not cheap by ballarat standards maybe, but good value compared to high quality places in melb...

beautiful little restaurant that i definitely wouldn’t have expected to find. i got the kambei course for 40aud that included edamame, small dishes, sashimi, grilled fish, rice, and miso soup.

really even thesashimiand small dishes at the start would’ve set you back 40aud at any japanese restaurant in the city. flavours were rich and simple and the food was filling.

will definitely go back!

the best japanese restaurant in town!!
kambei is the first japanese restaurant that run by japanese people that i know of so they foods are authentic. (don't get me wrong but if you are japanese food freak like me trust me you will know the difference)
they serve bestsashimiever!! here in ballarat even though they have not so many choices.
the rest of them food are too and the service is excellent

the only negative part here is they have limited choice of food selection on the menu. on friday and saturday night the serve only banquet. they are open 5days/week which means if you want al ca cart you have to go on wednesday and sunday night only

hopefully they have more selection in the future

kambei is an amazing japanese restaurant located right next to sovereign hill! being aesthetically pleasing with its japanese interior design, it is easily ballarats best japanese!

the vibe is tranquil, while also being unstuffy! service from the professional floor staff is friendly without being overbearing!

the food is fantastic too, with fresh seafood being shipped to ballarat from the footscray market daily!sashimiis a must, as well as the tempura. desserts aren't as strong in the flavour stakes, but still get the job done!

price wise i think it's pretty reasonable, with banquets being able to be paid for for around $60.

overall a great restaurant the all ballarat locals should try for ace japanese!

japanese food has been one of my favourite cuisines thus i found myself at kampei in ballarat. a free amuse-bouche of tofu and vegetables was a nice touch before we had oursashimiwhich was extremely fresh, beautifully cut and presented. the wagyu beef tataki was overwhelmed by the grated seasoned radish complimenting it. the vegetarian tempura was a slight let down as it was not as crispy as i would expect and was hoping to see more variety in the type of vegetables used. the chawan-mushi was perfect. for main, i had the grilled eel with rice and miso soup. the serve was generous and the eel was delicious but i would have preferred more sauce on it. overall a good experience and i would return. the waiter seems new and perhaps the waiting staff need more training.. one of them spilled the tempura sauce on our table when serving, and did not offer to wipe the table.

so impressed with this place. it was by chance that we found this place. was craving for japanese and this place came up top of the list on our search. didn't disappoint us at all in terms of flavour and service. lunch special was in big serving size that we were really full afterwards. sushi andsashimiwere fresh as well. definitely go back when we are in ballarat.

on a recent trip to ballarat, we booked in for lunch at late notice. they were very accommodating on the phone and we were greeted warmly on arrival. there were only two service staff on and it was reasonably busy. a little disappointing to be offered a limited menu but when i enquired we were offered the full a la cart menu, although they did not have sushi on the lunch menu, the kitchen was very accommodating and made sushi for my children.

overall the quality of food was very good, particularly for a regional restaurant, the only disappointing point was that thesashimiplate - although incredibly fresh and fantastically presented, the fish itself was cut too thick.

i highly recommend this restaurant to people who are visiting ballarat and for locals alike!

it was at a convenient but unfortunate location. we were the only ones there for a saturday night but were greeted by exceptional service. the entreesashimiwas well presented but average quality, tempura was well fried but not fresh. the highlight was definitely the cod a must have if visiting. perfectly marinated and the tender flesh just fell apart. overall worthwhile experience; some mediocre dishes.

beautiful.. a friend and i dined at kambei about a week ago and found the place to be impeccable. kambei is a very beautiful and aesthetically pleasing restaurant, holding very true to its' japanese background. the menus are presented beautifully and it is evident that the staff spent a lot of time planning each detail. i ordered thesashimiset and it was lovely. my friend had the teriyaki chicken and said it was one of the most tastiest teriyaki dishes he has ever tasted. my recommendation would be to try the plum wine! very tasty and relaxing!

went to kambei for the first time in june. our group had the set menu at just under $40 - it was incredible value, very authentic and the service was excellent. everyone voted thesashimias the star dish - three types of the freshest fish with daikon, wasabi and a dipping sauce plus two side dishes. this was followed by tempura like salmon and vegetables (delicious) then rice and miso with a beef dish that was the only disappointment. byo is $10 a bottle but the wines sold are very reasonable (a number of wines are from $28-$32). we will go again and try the a la carte menu which looks amazing.
