jonah's is certainly one of the most magnificent dining retreat in sydney which overlooks the majestic whale beach. the spectacular establishment started as a humble roadhouse 89 years ago for weary travellers from sydney in the northern beaches and has morphed into a credible destination for hollywood royalties and pop stars.
i was instantly amazed by the breathtaking scenery when i entered the contemporary dining room decorated with white tabletops, grey carpet and large windows.
my four course meal started with a wild caught kingfish and shark bay scampi caviar. the caviar was not the most expensive and savoury but certainly pushed the raw kingfish up another level. the worthy condiments cucumber and mint added flavours to the nondescript carpaccio.
the next entree, a certain mooloolaba king prawn partially seared locked in its naturally sweetness but a fresher catch of prawns would determine its texture.
the glazed quail was the most ordinary of the four dishes. partially cooked and accompanied by butternut pumpkin, turnips and pumpkin seeds, the glazed quail was nondescript and unexciting.
last but not least, the bass grouper, prepared with peas, eggplant, apple & lemon purée, pickled onions and crisp guanciale, was typical of contemporary restaurants. while the peas and eggplants added width to the dish, there was nothing to cheer about.
service was excellent and food was decent. it was definitely worth a visit for first timers but trekking another 25km from the city is probably a different story altogether.
