jestine's kitchen

after waiting in the friendly line that famously wraps around the restaurant’s corner, we found the best low country eats at jestine’s kitchen. jestine’s fried chicken basket with okra and coleslaw and a glass of sweet tea to wash it all down. and they had the best cornbread we ate all weekend!

seriously??. jestine's kitchen is best described as below average, over-rated food. there is nothing special about this local place other than it has been glorified on national tv and now you can sit on the corner and watch all the tourists line up single-file around the block for typical ice-tea, greasy fried chicken and tasteless coca-cola cake. blahh..

well i've read most of the reviews of jestine's from mostly out of towners. good and bad. i have to say i am a local and i was at the grand opening of this homey little place in 1996. im acquainted with jestines family and know the food well, and as a local i love it. my friends and family always request to come to jestines everytime they visit. as far as the crutisims of the food being bland and flavorless - if you want thai go to basil if you want indian go to taste of india. this place has and i hope always will hit the mark in southern/soul food. it may not be your mommas or grandmas (they rarely ever are) but good food none the less.

the coca-cola cake rocks!. really, i would have waited in that line twice just for the cake. however, i must agree with other reviewers when i repeat that the rest of the food was kind of bland.

i chose the pecan crusted chicken, green beans and mac n' cheese and all three lacked spice, salt, and overall flavor. the chicken was good but i could not taste the pecans. the green beans may have well been out of a can and the mac n' cheese was undersalted and dry. sure, anything deep fried can't be terrible and i ate every bite but i was left wanting more... flavor.

will probably go again for the dessert but skip the lunch - i can trade the calories for more flavorful fried food elsewhere.

gold!. i'll be eating here every time i make a stop in charleston from this point forward. everything i've sampled here has been absolutely delicious. the maple brown sugar ham, the fried chicken, the pecan encrusted fried chicken sandwich, the meatloaf, and even the cornbread with honey butter was simply amazing, and simple. i recommend washing it all down with some table wine (sweet tea). each time i leave here my soul feels all warm and fuzzy, and my belly never fails to give me a high-five!

with all the five star gourmet dinning options in charleston, jestine's is definately in the top 10 if not top three. the food is simple southern, but always good. have eaten here on every trip to charleston for years.

doesn't live up to the hype. i don't see what all the fuss is about. why is this place is so legendary? sure, the amount of food they serve is substantial and the atmosphere is nice, but the food itself leaves much to be desired. the fried chicken is just that - chicken that has been fried to death. there are no spices or seasoning to make it taste any other way. i had to douse my two huge pieces of chicken in hot sauce to give them any flavor. i would recommend the honey cornbread and fried okra, but beyond that, i'm not impressed.

way over-rated.. we were visiting charleston and read good things about this place and it was next door to our hotel so we thought we would give it a try. i love good southern cooking so i was looking forward to this place. i got the pecan crusted chicken breast which was good, not great but good. what really disappointed me were the sides. i ordered mac & cheese and green beans and honestly, they make both of these items better at the cracker barrel! the macaroni was mushy, tasteless and overcooked and the green beans had no flavor to them.
do yourself a favor and skip the wait at this place and if you want real southern diner type food go to mt. pleasant and try a place we stumbled across called page's okra grill! it was the best place we ate while in charleston.

tourist trap?. whenever a place gets really popular and is considered an institution, someone, somewhere is going to say its a tourist trap. i have done it myself with some local haunts.

i didn't think jestine's was great, but good enough. no tourist trap by my definition. even on a saturday night at 9, there was a pretty good mix of locals and tourists here. the prices were reasonable and the service friendly. no attempt just to turn the tables.

the food itself was pretty good. great cornbread. they had a couple items on the special menu that seemed more new orleans than true low country. but portions were generous and everything came out more or less as expected.

i wonder if somehow when what is basically a neighborhood joint becomes an institutional, people don't start expecting too much.

great food. i ate here for the first time one saturday afternoon to celebrate my cousin's college graduation. they do not take reservations so i did expect a wait. there was a line out the door that winded around the corner. we waited approximately 30 minutes or so. this was okay since our entire party had not completely arrived yet. we finally got seated and were promptly greeted and had our drink orders taken. the decoration was quaint. i ordered the pecan fried chicken breast with collard greens and it was incredible. it was juicy and a good portion. i highly recommend this place for the food and service. it is worth the wait!

they set cucumber onion salad on the table as soon as you sit down and it is delish! the rest of my meal was sllightly above average. coca cola cake tastes just like the one i make at home! i was a little irritated that the cornbread was an additional cost. i will return the next time i am in charleston.

a true southern meal. the fried chicken is to die for. i try to get their fried chicken recipe everytime i visit but they won't give it to me. if i had free time i would work there just so i could get a peak at their recipe book. great place to bring family and friends that want to try authentic southern cousine
