entertaining, lively, and great value meals. the type of restaurant you'd walk straight past if you didn't know it was here, because the facade really is nondescript and doesn't scream out 'here we are'. but once you walk inside, you don't really want to leave - the atmosphere of industryzenis spectacular.

my girlfriend and i visited here in 2015 during 'restaurant month'. we were initially drawn here by what we thought was their great deal of the month, but then thought we'd prefer to select our own dishes. and my goodness, what wonderful food - even the seasonal vegetables on the hot plate were delicious, and it's such a simple dish. i recommend that you try the yumyum prawns, which comes with teriyaki poached egg.

as you can see from the photos, the servings are generous, so we left feeling absolutely buggered - we were actually going to order more, so we were really glad that we didn't. my partner has returned since, of which i very jealously missed out on.

such a shame that the new owners have altered the iconic menu and stripped away what used to make the place so special.

industryzenused to be an exciting, theatrical dining experience, showcasing quality ingredients served with flair and atmosphere.

now with a reduced, boring and stereotypical menu, only one option for warm sake (unbranded/no region stated), a changed to how the reckon chips are served (why?), and overall disappointment, i sadly will likely never go back.

the staff were very hospitable, which was the only positive that i can come up with.

industryzenhas been a big part of my life since i was a little girl.. it’s a family favourite and we always eat waaay too much and have a jolly time. my go to dishes are the harumaki spring rolls, hot and crispy with a prawn and cheese filling 🤤, gyoza, chicken karaage, cha-han fried rice, katsu chicken (so big and crispy), beef tataki, prawns with yum yum and a chocolate fondue if i have any room left 😘.

what happened to industry zen?! gone are the days your ordered items arrive in an array of little shells, dishes and boxes, a uniqueness industryzenhad by way of food presentation.

service was good, taste and portion size was average in comparison to previous visits. with the variety of japanese restaurants in auckland, it blends in with the crowd.

only took one photo, a salad with vegetable terrine. perhaps the most creative dish out of the ten.

truckloads of dollars have been poured into setting up this japanese place in auckland cbd, and the effect is generous. high ceilings open up a commodious dining space in the centre of the restaurant, like a large medieval court. the restaurant's title reflects in the spartan airy esthetic, deliberating eschewing prettiness and using lots of provincial-style wood.

the menu is packed with numerous items, titling more towards casual eats rather than elaborate presentations. some dishes are an absolute joy, whereas many others are ho-hum. service by young japanese ladies can be decent when the crowd is thin, but as its gets busier , they seem newly hatched from the izakaya nursery, perambulating in their kimonos, perhaps lacking the time and certainly missing the savoir faire to pamper their patrons.

industryzenplays its best game with sashimi, as in the fatty sashimi platter($28. flat-out wonderful presentation and beautiful colours seduce you much before the tasting, with a long catamaran-like platter over which wooden boxes obliquely flow, decked with glistening maple leaves and jewel-like garnishes. there's lean tuna, subtly brilliant, almost like watermelon, but with an unmistakeable marine undertug that distinguishes its identity. creamy lushness oozes from the beautiful orange of salmon striped with fat. and there's kingfish, sashimi-grade no doubt but with a little fishy sharpness, more intrinsic than extrinsic, the only one of the trio that significantly benefitted from the counterpoint of soy sauce.

jumbo prawns ($14) are excellently crunchy and very tender but the desired delicate, infinitely haunting flavour is stymied by the pre-applied sauces. chicken katsu (excellently rendered here) by itself is teenager grub, and drizzling sauces on it makes it toddler cuisine. the nice waitress briefly checked my permission before thoroughly drizzling mustard and teriyaki sauce on that resplendent expanse ($20) , and i regretted not having the sense to ask her to limit those unholy anointments on just one half of the golden hide.

the menu had changed subtly yet significantly on the second visit. the previous one sported interesting sections like "seasonal specials" , "the tofu", "the blue fin tuna" , "the bigger bites". the new one, though it retained most of the dishes, jettisoned this episodic flavour and lumped most of them into more generic sections, shoving the narration style closer to a mass-market izakaya.

tako-wasabi, pegged at $6 had predictably had a sharp wasabi nip no doubt, but the crashing downer was the cold octopus cut up into little pieces, still having a crispy bite, alas sporting zero flavour aside from that alien wasabi. agedashi tofu ($9) looked like large luscious scallops, the tofu voluptuously slippery soft, its exterior roasted to a pleasant crisp, nestling in an umami-forward soy broth bolstered by bonito flakes. "hokkaido scallops with yum yum sauce" ($24) were doused in unremarkable mayo-based spiced sauces which alas danced in vain around the main ingredient that lacked luscious sweet flesh.

zen industry ultimately offers limited treasure to the patron looking for cultured japanese fare of elaborate proportions. there's no omakase either. what you do find are small eats offered in two dozen other innocuously "ambitioned" japanese joints in the city. i entered expecting some true japanese quiddity, while eventually discovering only more overseas pusillanimity. we went for thezenset menu on the night. while their website says its 79pp, the actual price in store was $88.. perhaps it's time to update the website?

the presentation was great like many other people have expressed here. however, the favour was not particularly impressive considering the price tag.. the salmon sashimi was disappearing as they didn't even trim off the brown part of the fish- first time experience for me in a japanese restaurant. also, the set menu includes a wanygu grill beef but it was literally two 3x3cm thin meat- it was quite embarrassing to dig into the "dish" after the waiter went through all the trouble of grilling it in front of us and giving us options of four different rock salt. it's more like a show rather than dinner. the place was extremely noise- while i like an informal dinning environment, this is more than i can handled- perhaps due to the fact that we were sitting to a big table. i was a bit confused by what this restaurant's theme -it's not hearty satisfying place that you can fill yourself up or a sophisticated place with elegant setting- a bit of everything but not done in the best way i think.

not sure if i will try this place again. if i do, i definitely am not going back to the set menu.

we have been to industrialzenfrom time to time over the years and it have always been an experience. given this background we decided to have lunch there on saturday. the initial thing that struck is was how tired the restaurant was looking and unfortunately the food was the same. don't get me wrong it look great but the quality and the amazing flavours of the past experiences were gone. it was also extremely quiet and the staff lacked their usual pizzazz. in the light of our latest experience i don't think we will be back.

my go to for japanese in auckland, not only is the presentation amazing and unique but the food just melts in your mouth, the staff are lovely and attentive and i love how they give you "shout outs" for any birthdays/occasions you may be celebrating that night, really adds to the experience.
we find it very well priced and usually get 3-4 larger dishes with one smaller dish to share between the two of us and we are always stuffed at the end, note that dishes do tend to come out in a random order so don't expect them to come out in the order you've said.
industryzenwill continue to be me & my partners favourite restaurant in auckland and we can't wait to come back soon!

o so disappointed! i used to live in auckland, so have been here many times a few years ago and was excited to bring my boyfriend along to experience it.
we both got thezenset menu, a bottle of wine, and some sake.
the service was very average, the wine was warm and when i asked for an ice bucket, she splashed at least a glass on the floor when moving the wine (ice bucket was sideways) and didnt apologise or anything.
the food was terrible...not just average but really prettty bad! super small portion sizes, i was extra hungry afterwards (i'm sure i used to be super fill after going here). the boyfriend even wanted a cheese burger he was so hungry!
to top it all off i'm sure the salmon sashimi was off (tasted that way anyway).
for 2 people and $260 ill never be back :-(

it’s been a while since i visitedzenand it used to be somewhere i really liked. the menu is elaborate and dishes well presented however the food came so slow. the dishes came almost one by one and we would finish each dish before the next one arrived. almost like playing catch up to the point i couldn’t be bothered taking photos.

highlights: prawn tempura, agedashi tofu, takoyaki, presentation

average: everything else

beef could be cooked a bit more. price is ok as i used the zomato pro discount.

went on a sunday night and it was not too busy which is good. we ordered thezenset, sashimi platter (medium), beef tataki and also two desserts to share between 2 and half. food in general is average but their presentations of food is great looks so detailed personally i think they somehow took over the taste of their food. more like a place to take photos than for its quality of food.

half way through our dinner there was a show where chefs will come out and traditional drum will be played.

generally it's not bad but what saved the meal was the dessert. we got the sake brulee (can be seen in photo) and also the dessert of the day (dried iced photo). service is average if to compare to the amount of money i spent i would expect more.
