you "fixed" something that wasn't broken. having been a customer for years, after our latest meal from yet anothermenuchange we have decided we will no longer be back.

what made the place fantastic has been removed. revert back to themenufrom two changes ago.

thatmenuworked, it meant we could bring anyone in and they could find something to their taste.

the newmenuis so reduced this is no longer possible. the portions have decreased and the prices have bounced up.

bring back the robata!, bring back warming the lotus chips and the original chicken salt. the crispy chicken wasn't and the teriyaki was also not the great taste like it use to be.

it's an end of an era. after a disappointing meal that i paid $20 more for compared to the old menus.

won't be back unless the oldmenuitems are reinstated.

just went back to industry zen, the first time was with a large group and there was lots of seafood which i am not a fan of however the last visit was just a catch up dinner with a friend so i got to try all the yummy things on themenuthat caught my eye the first time. first thing i have to say is - lots of seafood option. wow! unfortunately i have a mild allergy to seafood so i couldn't enjoy the seafood selection, the upside was that there is an amazing selection of non seafood items on the menu. my friend and i shared the kara age chicken, the gyoza and the agedashi tofu. the chicken was amazing - fried and crispy on the outside but the meat was still juicy and succulent on the inside. the tofu was also one of the best i have ever had soft and silky, the sauce was amazing as well. i had the mayo chicken which came out on a hot plate. flavour wise i found it a bit salty and there was a bit too much mayo on it however as the name suggests it is mayo chicken so no complaints there. ambience was alright ad wait staff were friendly. i did find it a little bit dim however i believe that is the look they are going for. i would recommend this place if you are looking for good jap food.

such a shame that the new owners have altered the iconicmenuand stripped away what used to make the place so special.

industry zen used to be an exciting, theatrical dining experience, showcasing quality ingredients served with flair and atmosphere.

now with a reduced, boring and stereotypical menu, only one option for warm sake (unbranded/no region stated), a changed to how the reckon chips are served (why?), and overall disappointment, i sadly will likely never go back.

the staff were very hospitable, which was the only positive that i can come up with.

the a5 graded wagyu was clearly not a5 (see pics). simply put...its average japanese food with overly decorated plating arrangements. we tried many dishes to get a very good idea of themenuoverall. slightly dissapointed.

truckloads of dollars have been poured into setting up this japanese place in auckland cbd, and the effect is generous. high ceilings open up a commodious dining space in the centre of the restaurant, like a large medieval court. the restaurant's title reflects in the spartan airy esthetic, deliberating eschewing prettiness and using lots of provincial-style wood.

themenuis packed with numerous items, titling more towards casual eats rather than elaborate presentations. some dishes are an absolute joy, whereas many others are ho-hum. service by young japanese ladies can be decent when the crowd is thin, but as its gets busier , they seem newly hatched from the izakaya nursery, perambulating in their kimonos, perhaps lacking the time and certainly missing the savoir faire to pamper their patrons.

industry zen plays its best game with sashimi, as in the fatty sashimi platter($28. flat-out wonderful presentation and beautiful colours seduce you much before the tasting, with a long catamaran-like platter over which wooden boxes obliquely flow, decked with glistening maple leaves and jewel-like garnishes. there's lean tuna, subtly brilliant, almost like watermelon, but with an unmistakeable marine undertug that distinguishes its identity. creamy lushness oozes from the beautiful orange of salmon striped with fat. and there's kingfish, sashimi-grade no doubt but with a little fishy sharpness, more intrinsic than extrinsic, the only one of the trio that significantly benefitted from the counterpoint of soy sauce.

jumbo prawns ($14) are excellently crunchy and very tender but the desired delicate, infinitely haunting flavour is stymied by the pre-applied sauces. chicken katsu (excellently rendered here) by itself is teenager grub, and drizzling sauces on it makes it toddler cuisine. the nice waitress briefly checked my permission before thoroughly drizzling mustard and teriyaki sauce on that resplendent expanse ($20) , and i regretted not having the sense to ask her to limit those unholy anointments on just one half of the golden hide.

themenuhad changed subtly yet significantly on the second visit. the previous one sported interesting sections like "seasonal specials" , "the tofu", "the blue fin tuna" , "the bigger bites". the new one, though it retained most of the dishes, jettisoned this episodic flavour and lumped most of them into more generic sections, shoving the narration style closer to a mass-market izakaya.

tako-wasabi, pegged at $6 had predictably had a sharp wasabi nip no doubt, but the crashing downer was the cold octopus cut up into little pieces, still having a crispy bite, alas sporting zero flavour aside from that alien wasabi. agedashi tofu ($9) looked like large luscious scallops, the tofu voluptuously slippery soft, its exterior roasted to a pleasant crisp, nestling in an umami-forward soy broth bolstered by bonito flakes. "hokkaido scallops with yum yum sauce" ($24) were doused in unremarkable mayo-based spiced sauces which alas danced in vain around the main ingredient that lacked luscious sweet flesh.

zen industry ultimately offers limited treasure to the patron looking for cultured japanese fare of elaborate proportions. there's no omakase either. what you do find are small eats offered in two dozen other innocuously "ambitioned" japanese joints in the city. i entered expecting some true japanese quiddity, while eventually discovering only more overseas pusillanimity. (2.75/5 = close to good) more pics @upnworld

beautiful wooden panels across the restaurant floor and traditional japanese decor quickly make you fall in love with industry zen's japanese vibe. at lunch time the setmenuoffers a variety of raw dishes including sashimi and sushi as well as cooked dishes that are wonderfully affordable. mr piggy and i have been a big fan of this place for a long time and return every time we visit auckland.

we came here on a quiet monday night 6.30pm for a birthday dinner with the family. the ambience is soothing with dim lighting and the interior is beautiful. we had the $55 setmenuand there were 7 dishes - all which were presented beautifully and tasted devine! they were small dishes but you filled up pretty quick! there's a projector that plays karate movies and half way through the night they play the drums and dedicate happy birthday songs/shoutouts to birthday guests/anniversaries etc. then they introduce the chefs! it's a great time with great food! highly recommend!

some friends of mine suggested setmenuhere, i am regretted not trying.  the table behind ordered set menu, very attractive dish decoration, just like what i had in japan.

impressed by the fried squid legs, it was the best one i ever had in my life. the dessert platter was also tasty with japanese okashi. the service was outstanding as well.

price was a bit high, especially for bbq skewers....that's what i said, go for set menu.

we went for the zen setmenuon the night. while their website says its 79pp, the actual price in store was $88.. perhaps it's time to update the website?

the presentation was great like many other people have expressed here. however, the favour was not particularly impressive considering the price tag.. the salmon sashimi was disappearing as they didn't even trim off the brown part of the fish- first time experience for me in a japanese restaurant. also, the setmenuincludes a wanygu grill beef but it was literally two 3x3cm thin meat- it was quite embarrassing to dig into the "dish" after the waiter went through all the trouble of grilling it in front of us and giving us options of four different rock salt. it's more like a show rather than dinner. the place was extremely noise- while i like an informal dinning environment, this is more than i can handled- perhaps due to the fact that we were sitting to a big table. i was a bit confused by what this restaurant's theme -it's not hearty satisfying place that you can fill yourself up or a sophisticated place with elegant setting- a bit of everything but not done in the best way i think.

not sure if i will try this place again. if i do, i definitely am not going back to the set menu.

finally crossed this one off our 'need to go there' list.  japanese cuisine is one of our favs.  was recommended by a jewish pizza chef in niue (i know!). we'd stopped in for a quickie meal before going out.  nice atmosphere.  this place (you wouldn't think it) is huge! so plenty of options for seating from a more foodcourt style to catering for large groups to very intimate 2 seaters for datenight!  love the oldskool japanese movies playing and service staff are friendly and attentive.  food presentation was fantastic.  more on the side of 'arty'.  husband had the blue fin tasting platter which was definitely in this category where you had to really explore around your plate.  but i wouldn't suggest this if you're hungry as it's more about the taste and cuts on this dish.  i had the yumyum prawns.  lived up to it's name!  very filling and a side of edamame (who can go past those!).  it's the only place we've seen with a dark asahi too.  so that was a must.  quite a light dark malt i thought but still punchy in flavour.  i'd say yes, value for money (excluding the blue finmenubut you gotta try everything once right?)
