this place is an absolute treat. totally loved it. starting from the service to the ambience and the delicious food. a winter chill night and sitting outdoors was the best. they've got a great variety and spread menu of wines and food/ even though i would have liked a little more vegetarian options nonetheless it was good.
food -
soup of the day - mushroom soup with cheese. i'm usually not a mushroom fan but this soup totally had me. the cheese and cream just took over the strong mushroom taste and made it heavenly.
vegetable biryani - i was shocked to see this on the menu but it was good. portion was good. i found it a bit sweet for my taste but the entire dish with nuts and tofu blended well.
beef tenderloin - beautifully decorated dish with the right serving for one. thought it could be shared but after a bite there was one moreorderedon the table.

desserts -
bread pudding - coming from bombay i was expecting something completely different by this pudding was good. it was cakey and and topped with cream and cinnamon apples.

"house of tricks" restaurant in tempe is a bit of a misnomer. first, i must acknowledge that i genuinely liked "house of tricks" in downtown tempe, az. while it most definitely does not deserve its 4 $ signs (e.g., far too overpriced for the average fare one actually receives), the service is quality and the quaintness of the place is very napa/north cali being the restaurant is in two early 20th century houses with 12 foot ceilings and large original sash windows and a wonderful outside bar with lots of seating and plantings. it is billed as a romantic gay-friendly restaurant for dates or anniversaries. hence, it was my 8th anniversary with my partner, so i surprised him with a dinner at house of tricks--our first time visiting. gay-friendly--certainly. the bevy of gay waiters is a testament. romantic--uh, not so much. cramped eating quarters doesn't equate to intimacy or romance. the new year’s eve special entree my partner and iorderedwas prime rib with shaved shoestring potatoes, asparagus and seasoned mashed potatoes ($34). i also had mixed spring greens, tomatoes, cucumber, red onion and radish with soft goat cheese and white balsamic-honey vinaigrette ($7), and my partnerordereda starter--artisan cheese plate with candied nuts, grilled baguette, sierra nevada dijon mustard and local honey ($15). the waitress was also gracious enough to alert us to a house special where bottled wines were mark down 33%. weordereda $35 bottle of gewürztraminer for $24--delicious. yeah--i could still get it retail for $9.99 at fry foods, but heck--it was new years, the salad was tasty. short on goat cheese (a tablespoon plop was atop the salad), the vinaigrette was tasty but too faint, and the tomatoes and cucumbers were minimal and barely present. the artisan cheese plate was the best deal at $15 with wonderful toasted sourdough wedges, a huge chunk of brie, and assorted hard cheeses with honey and mustard, and toasted sweet cashews. bread served at the table, however, was cold and its accompanied sweet butter was ice cold and hard. the prime rib was served only one way--lukewarm and well-done. the mash potatoes were cold, so requested two additional hot orders. they came, but microwaved so hot we both nearly burned our tongues. the shaved potatoes shoestrings were a garnish and "neat" but unnecessary. the asparagus--all three short little spears--were the only hot food on the plate. i so miss the fabulous prime rib dinners of corbin's on central in phoenix--only $5.99 and twice the amounts with the steak grilled to one's liking and restaurant ambiance far classier than house of tricks. unfortunately, it closed nearly a year ago. house of tricks is just that--a bunch of gimmicky, pretentious chef tricks with a sizable crowd of pretentious patrons one would think are visiting from the bay area of cali. do i like the restaurant itself? not really. ambiance was nice and quaint but way short on romantic. overall, i have to say--yes--i would go back for the cheese platter and wine perhaps and sit outside laughing with friends. anything else is just needless debt.

what happened to it? bad lunch. went for lunch this past saturday. have gone to the restaurant numerous times with good experiences. this day we received out food an it was out and out nasty. iorderedthe sirloin salad. asked for medium cooked beef. i received tough, well done chewy pieces of beef, not edible, overdressed, swimming in dressing salad. overall nasty and disgusting. my wife's meat loaf was dry with no flavor and potatoes had no cheese as advertised, with old nastly stringbeans. i guess hot is resting on its laurels, we won't make the drive anymore. don't go there.

yeah, what's with the salt??. we have been wanting to try this place out for a few years, so we went for my husband's birthday with several relatives. i suppose of minor concern was the fact that several staff members (including our waiter) knew it was my husband's birthday, but nothing at all special was done about it, nor was it acknowledged in any way. okay, so apparently recognizing special occasions is not their thing... not a super big deal, but i thought i'd mention in case this happens to be why you are going.

the outdoor patio dining area is gorgeous. however, it was a little cold and quite windy, so we opted to sit inside. what a contrast! big, plain, drab, empty, boxy, boring room, with poor aesthetics. we had to yell at each other in order to hear one another (sort of), and there weren't even that many other people seated in this room to excuse it from feeling like we were eating in a school cafeteria.

our waiter was friendly enough. he forgot a few minor things and took away every single one of my (4!) forks for eating my actual dinner, but nothing unforgivable. nothing outstanding though, either.

i realize this isn't "fast food", and we don't expect that at all, but, the food really did take forever. i don't know how long it was from the time of order until we got our salads, but at that time we were told it would be another 15-20 minutes, when, in fact, it took 30 minutes to receive our dinners after the salads. there were two children in our party, who had to be taken outside and walked around and entertained twice for 20 minutes while waiting for our food.

none of these things individually would i consider deal-breakers, except for the fact that we spent a total of $280+ for 7 people (2 of them children under the age of 7), so i do think we should be able to expect more. so far, a place like applebee's is doing better than this (and at about 1/3 of the price.)

and then the food comes. (the deal-breaker for my relatives.) my husband said his meal was good, and the food weorderedfor the kids was okay. (although, weorderedthem an "adult" meal of gnocchi to share, and i couldn't believe how small the serving was! in any other restaurant i've been in, the serving would have been 2-3 times more.)

the side salad that iordered(a la carte - $7!), was tiny!!! seriously?!?! they think it's worth a dollar for each little salad leaf?! (i'm really not exaggerating.) the lamb that iordered(which my waiter claimed was a "meal and a half", was only that by comparison to the other meals.) i did expect it to be fatty, because lamb is... but i didn't find hardly any meat, and was in no way full when i left. certainly no "and-a-half" meal leftover.

the lamb was fairly salty, but, managed to stay on the high end of "still acceptable/edible" to me. however, the mashed potatoes that my aunt and i had? the description left by a previous commenter, "it was eye squinting salty", is perfectly accurate. my aunt could only choke down two bites before she gave up. my other aunt said her meal was quite salty too and was surprised that her squash, which would usually been on the sweeter side, obviously had added salt.

to me, over-salting is an attempt to make up for a lack of culinary skill. "when in doubt, salt the hell out of it!" either the chef doesn't have much talent at using other ingredients and seasonings to bring out delicious flavors, or he doesn't think he does...or he enjoys snacking on salt licks.

in any event, my relatives definitely won't be back. there is a small chance i would be willing to give it another try - but only on a nice day so that we could sit out on the lovely patio and order from the (significantly less expensive, therefore less financially risky) lunch menu and i'll ask if there are any low-salt options.

if you really love salty food. the menu choices sounded great, the reviews were good, but our experience was well below average. weorderedthe ahi tuna, it was cooked properly but lacked flavor, the shitake was very, very salty. we alsoorderedthe pork tenderloin with rissoto. the pork was beyond salty, it was eye squinting salty. the wait staff was efficient and switched out our pork serving for one that was cooked with less salt but informed us that they would do "what they could" but the cook loves salt to the point that he has a morton salt tattoo. the exchanged pork was not brined and therefore not salty but did not have the flavor or technique one would expect for the price. good service, nice patio, below average food, we will not return.

the menu has great features one was the mediterranan appetizer. fantastic! the martini's are great, especially the lemon drop.
i oredered the cioppicio, which was not good,so i was disappointed about that. my sisterorderedthe reuben, which was good.
it's a good place for drinks and appetizers and enjoy outside in az.
